We now have 99 life members and 40 households with annual memberships extending to March 2026 or beyond. There are an additional 46 memberships that expired at the end of March and have not yet been renewed. If you care to extend your membership and have not already done so it is easy to do online at: https://www.fairbankspaddlers.org/join/. Alan ------------------------------------- Message from March 6: Hello Paddlers, This is just a reminder that Fairbanks Paddlers membership year runs from the beginning of April through the end of March. If you aren't a life member and haven't paid ahead at some point in the past, it may be time to renew your membership. The dues structure remains as it has been for decades: $10 for individuals, $15 for a household; Life memberships are $100. (Note that there is no family option for life memberships--each individual who wants one must get it separately.) Membership can be renewed online through Paypal at https://www.fairbankspaddlers.org/join/ . If you prefer to join or renew by mail you can download the membership form, fill it out, and mail it in with a check. Your membership entitles you to participate in club trips (check upcoming events at www.fairbankspaddlers.org) and helps support our activities promoting stream stewardship, conservation, access, and safety. It also supports our efforts to promote human-powered recreation on rivers and lakes and to provide a forum (this listserv) for communication between Alaskans interested in paddlesports. And of course it helps us put on winter programs to help us get through the "water as a solid" phase of each year by showcasing wonderful opportunities for paddling that we have in this state. Some statistics: 96 of us have life memberships, and 14 households have already paid dues through March of 2026. Sixty-five of us have memberships expiring at the end of this month. If you have questions about your membership status you can email me, or text or call me at 907-378-6384. It may take me a few days to get back to you. Thanks, Alan (Membership guy)

Looking for help with Scouts
Hi everyone - I am the Scoutmaster of Troop 38 here in Fairbanks. The scouts decided they wanted to take up and learn canoeing in July/August, both to earn the Canoeing Merit Badge and up their game with learning some skills they can use for trips in the future. Would anyone be interested in helping teach basic canoeing skills to around 15 scouts during that timeframe? The council will supply canoes, paddles, and lifejackets (as needed). As a scouting activity, it would be covered under BSA insurance, and we could register through ACA as well. We have a lot of parents able to assist, just none who are experts in canoeing. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you are interested in helping. I anticipate a handful of evenings will be required. Thanks for your consideration! Thanks, Matt Cooper mcooper@... 907-978-7143

Ecuador might be the center of the universe for Northern Hemisphere boaters seeking to escape the winter months and head to the promised land of boulder gardens, massive boofs, and warm water. For years, Sam and his crew had heard about welcoming locals and more runs than one could possibly paddle in a few weeks. Sam says, “We weren’t disappointed. The first week and a half of our Ecuadorian mission was exactly what was promised to us, however, after returning to civilization after a few days of jungle paddling, we found ourselves squarely situated in a violent coup. Despite the political strife, a mass prison escape, and numerous guns pointed in our direction, we will always consider Ecuador as one of the best winter paddling grounds in the world.” Sam Stone Sam is Fairbanks Paddlers’ Vice President and the Assistant Coordinator for University of Alaska’s Outdoor Adventures. Hailing from Maine, Sam is a passionate waterman with a love for all types of paddle sports. When not cruising down whitewater rivers or playing in ocean swells, Sam can be found in the mountains with his skis or fat biking Alaskan winter trails.
