Eastern AK Rang Thru Hike Project 6
Afternoon FAHC! I am reaching out because I was approached by Michael Hopper about the Eastern AK Range Thru hike project. A few of us attended their presentation on their trial run in 2018 at Beaver Sports. They also did a presentation in Healy at the 49th State Brewery. COVID really sidetracked their progress and they are looking to start breathing life back into this project. I do not have all the information by any means, but I will share with you what I do know. - Currently in the design phase for a pedestrian (only) bridge across the Delta. - Currently coordinating a BLM permit for said structure. -Looking into applying for the National Park Service (NPS) Partnership in the RIvers, Trails and Conservation (RTC) program to help with navigate the bureaucratic and fundraising challenges of non-profit projects - Non Profit being organized is "The Alliance for Access (*human-powered) to the EAR, (AAEAR) With that partnership the NPS wants to see evidence of popular support for its RTC projects. This is where we could potentially come in. We could collectively write a letter and route for signatures. We could individually write etc. There will be many pushes along the way and getting support through many different offices, but the NPS partnership for RTC. The project itself is quite ambitious, proposing a total of four bridges and several emergency shelters plus two backcountry basecamp/resupply centers deep in the Range at Hayes and Deborah. They currently believe once complete, the Hayes Range will be safely and sustainably accessed by a much wider range of hikers and adventurers. They are in the progressing of revising their website and once they send it my way I intend to share it. Bottom line I am looking to see if this is something we would like to formally be involved in as a Hiking Club (Are we even an official Club anymore?) or I don't mind drafting a letter and sharing it with folks to choose to be involved with as individuals. My cell number is 575-749-5368 if any of the group leaders want to give me a call. John? Don? Carol? Erica? I just moderate the Hiking Club page ;) Vr, Jenny

Trip Reports? 4
Hi folks, I'd love to build up more trip reports on the FAHC website. Did you do an interesting hike this summer (or last spring or winter) or two or three or ten? Could you write up a couple or few paragraphs about it, and submit 3 or 4 photos? (High-resolution, full-sized photos are best; I can crop and resize them.) GPS tracks are fun to include, but aren't necessary. The write-up doesn't need to be polished. I can edit it. And of course it will be with your byline, no matter how much editing I need to do (unless you want to be anonymous). Send them to don@.... And I'd love to add to the Trails section, if you want to document one or more of our popular Interior trails. Let me know if you'd like to do that. Thanks! Don

Call for action - Tanana Lakes Rec Area trail funding ordinance
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Eric Troyer <fbxtrails@...> Date: Sun, Aug 9, 2020 at 7:24 AM Subject: Call for action - Tanana Lakes Rec Area trail funding ordinance There is an ordinance coming before the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly on Thursday, August 13, that would appropriate about $7,700 as a local match for about $67,000 in federal money for trailheads and trail access improvements at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area. The local match is needed or else we don¡¯t get the federal grant money. This shouldn¡¯t be too controversial, but spending government money should always be taken seriously. If you support this ordinance (No. 2020-20-1C), please let the Assembly know. You can send an email or call individual Assembly members: http://www.fnsb.us/assembly/Pages/Assembly-Members.aspx You can attend the meeting: http://www.fnsb.us/assembly/Pages/connected.aspx ORDINANCE NO. 2020 - 20 - 1C: http://www.fnsb.us/assembly/OrdinanceResolutions/2020-20-1C.pdf August 13 Assembly meeting agenda: http://www.fnsb.us/assembly/AssemblyMeetingDocuments/08_13_2020_REG_Fp.pdf -- ¡°Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.¡±

Table Top Mountain Trail Project in August 4
Hi folks, The still relatively new Interior Alaska Trails and Parks Foundation is starting to partner with BLM on trail projects. The one they've decided to start with this summer is to brush the Table Top Mountain trail in the White Mountains, off Nome Creek Road up the Steese. They are proposing the weekend of August 21-23 as the project dates. It would involve camping a couple of nights, some training on the tools, and then going to town on the trail. An IATPF trailer with hand tools will be on-site, and BLM will provide gas brushcutters and PPE to use on the project. A BLM field training for operators on equipment safety and use will happen on that Friday (8/21). They need about six volunteers. If you're willing to help, please contact Geoff Orth, (907) 479-0014. Thanks! Don

Anyone interested in becoming involved in planning the birthday party for the 50th anniversary of the Alaska State Parks? I would like to see this happen, but would need a few more people to help me. Thanks, Carol

Alaska State Parks 50th Anniversary
Hi folks, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Alaska State Parks, and they want to celebrate big. There are several events planned in the Interior, including an art show, a birthday party in Delta, a cabin challenge similar to the borough's trails challenge, and more. Stay tuned for the details! And lots more statewide. One of the things that we'd love to do is to have a birthday party in Fairbanks as well. The state would provide cake, it could be somewhere like Chena Landing or another park. We're thinking early August, but nothing is set in stone about that. Other than that, it can take shape in whatever way the planners think will be fun for people. By the way, the "we" I'm talking about is the Citizens Advisory Board of the northern region of state parks, which I am privileged to serve on. I was wondering if FAHC would like to take this on? It would be a great way to call attention to the hiking club, and a great public service to celebrate our parks. Working with the state parks folks and their resources, it would probably take just a few people to plan, and a few more to volunteer on the day to make it happen. Any interest? Feel free to reply with questions to me, or you can contact the superintendent of the northern region, Brooks Ludwig, at 907.451.2698 or brooks.ludwig@.... Thanks for considering it! Don

Hike the El Dorado Creek Trail to the old railroad trestle in Goldstream 2
Hike the El Dorado Creek Trail to the old railroad trestle in Goldstream WhenSat, February 8, 10:30am ¨C 1:30pm DescriptionMeet at the pullout on the east side of Ballaine Rd. About 3/4 mile past the top of the hill as you head north from Farmer's Loop Road. Rumor has it that there's a winter trails challenge sign at the trestle. This is an easy hike and the trails should be well packed by snow machines and dog teams so snow shoes probably won't be needed but if you have them, strapping a set to the back of your pack might prove useful. Plan on about two to three hours. After the hike we can go to Ivory Jacks for lunch. The temperature is forecast to be somewhat tropical, up in the high teens above zero! John Risser 488-6500

Fw: Thank you FHC
From: Ludwig, Brooks A (DNR) Hi Carol, Here¡¯s the letter of appreciation our park director sent to the Fairbanks Hiking Club along with a photo of the sign. A hard copy is being sent to your address. Thank you for funding the sign. I¡¯ll make sure it gets put up once the ground thaws. This is a nice trailhead, accessing a state of the art trail built using best management practices. The new trail is a little over 5 miles long and connects to Stiles Creek Trail near mile 8. Brooks

1-3 January Lees Cabin
Hello! I have Lees cabin booked from 1-3 January for 2 adults and my kids. We¡¯ve been watching the temperatures closely and might at least use it the first night. I wanted to reach out to see if anyone is interested in coming out for a bit. I know some of you mentioned riding fat bikes or skiing out. My only concern is my car won¡¯t starting after 2 nights at the cabin. I¡¯m considering leaving the keys in it (punch code) and if anybody is out there I would have you hit the auto start so it runs for 20 min. Message or text me if you want to make plans.
