DRIVER - This device cannot start. (Code 10)
3
Hello all, I've spent quite a few hours troubleshooting this issue. I've checked continuity on the FA-VA5 USB board - all good. I've downloaded, unzipped in a new folder and uninstalled and re-installed the drivers (Windows 7/8/8.1 Download VCP (5.3 MB) (Default)) several times. I used 7-ZIP application to unzip. Device manager has the yellow triangle with ! I tried this on another Win7 pro computer and get the same result.CODE 10. Used 7-ZIP app. I ran windows troubleshooter and it recommends reinstalling driver for silicon Labs CP210X USB to UART Bridge. It responds with silicon Labs CP210X USB to UART Bridge has a driver problem (not fixed) Running Win7 Pro 64 SP1 Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, 73 Jim, K6JS

Reading Material
Dear FA-VA5 users, Historically, radio amateurs are familiar with VSWR measurements on their antennas. Now the FA-VA5 enables us to measure antenna impedance. I have therefore placed a PDF on the subject of "Impedance and VSWR" in the files section of our forum. Link: /g/fa-va5-users/files/Impedance%20and%20VSWR Please let me know if anything is unclear or incorrect. 73 Dieter, VK3FFB

Frank's assembly video
#chat
A new chat has been created: Dear members Frank, DC8FG, has produced a fine video with excellent, detailed photography on the FA-VA5 assembly. I recommend it to everyone who is about to assemble a FA-VA5. The video link is in Frank's message under "FA-VA5 Assembly related comments": /g/fa-va5-users/message/60 regards Dieter, VK3FFB View/Join This Chat Do not reply to this message to post to the chat. Calibration
22
After performing calibration, it may be a good idea to check the calibration. Fundamentally, the open and short standards can be used. We should see a frequency independent short and open response when connecting the standards as done during calibration. Another possible check that works up to at least 150 MHz can be done by connecting two BNC 50 Ohm terminations to a BNC female-female-mal T-piece, as shown in the attached image. As the two 50 Ohm terminations are in a parallel connection (ignoring the effect of the T-junction which is OK for low frequencies) we get R = 25 Ohms and this results in VSWR = 2.0. If the instrument shows a VSWR value significantly lower or higher, then the calibration may be wrong. 73 Dieter, VK3FFB

Aircoil Design
I have been using this aircoil calculator for many years and found it to be very accurate: https://hamwaves.com/inductance/en/index.html It takes a little time to get used to it, but it sure is very accurate. The calculation excludes of course the effects of other structures nearby the coil. A coil inside a small housing may behave quite different to a coil in a large housing or in free air. Last not least you may find the calculated Q of the coil being significantly larger than the FA-VA5 measured value. This is a known issue related to the nature of the measurement. 73 Dieter, VK3FFB

Posting forum messages
Dear group members, As the group grows in size, we are having a number of good contributions from members in the form of messages. This is very important and I encourage all members to share their experiences with the FA-VA5. Having said that, I am a bit behind myself with posting :) I have used the VA5 extensively and will post about my experiences soon. In order to keep the forum messages in an ordered and easy accessible location, I have moved some messages to the appropriate general message heading. 73 and a warm welcome to all new members Dieter, VK3FFB
