Wal-Mart Question

Hi Group,

I have not seen in print anywhere the Wal-Marts that are OFF LIMITS for
overnight parking.

I have heard on various forums that local statutes prohibit camping
within city limits, etc., etc., so those Wal-Marts are not available. I
think El Paso is one of those cities, no?

Is there a list anywhere of these "off limits" Wal-Marts?

Also, are all Sam's Clubs available too?

In fact, I have never seen it anywhere written or published that Wal-
Marts are available for parking over night... it's just always been
word of mouth. What's up with that?

Best,

Garrett

Add Las Vegas to the banned list. Went into effect sometime within the last year as I found out first hand.

I've seen Wal-Mart camping cited in a number of publications, but I'm thinking that maybe the first I heard of it was on some TV (perhaps travel-related) show.

There is a website that tracks which ones do and don't allow camping:

I've got the Free Campgrounds West book, and it has been reasonably useful.

The thing I need now is an update for TomTom Shared POI data with that info.

No matter which Wal-Marts are on the OKAY list it is still advisable to check with the manager first.

I agree. Many stores don't want you there because others took advantage.

I have seen people in big RV's in Wal-Mart lots with awnings out, lawn chairs in position, and
BBQ grills set up. They look like they had been there for days or weeks! I'm sure this is not
what Wal-Mart had in mind when they were initially liberal in allowing over night parking,
but as is so often the case, some ruin it for many.

This is one of those cases where I would much rather roll in without
drawing attention, be *very* descrete and respectful, and just
stealth camp in the back corner after buying some Wal-Mart
provisions. I make sure that I have my plastic Wal-Mart bags there
in plain view if/when the security guard comes knocking.

It's easier to ask forgiveness later if asked to leave... and that
hasn't happened yet (for me).

If I already see a half-dozen campers in one corner, I feel fine
about popping the top. If I don't see any campers, I suspect (for me)
it's best to leave a sleeping dog alone and just go hide in a corner
next to three other cars somewhere, leave the top down, lights off,
shades down, and scram after about five or six hours of much-needed
shut-eye.

(I forget which Wal-Mart it was (perhaps Flagstaff), but I was amazed
to see about 25 or 30 campers when I pulled in... and some were BIG
rigs!)

Just my TooSense on that one... but, I do see both points of view!

I see your point as well. While it never happened in a Wal-Mart lot, I have been chased from
other spots. Nothing worse than being woken from a deep sleep in the middle of the night
and told to move on.
