Roof rack?
I am thinking of installing a roof rack on my 1995 EVC with Winnebago
poptop (to carry kayaks mostly). Planning to use the Yakima SideLoader Brackets: together with the Yakima 1A Raingutter Towers I am a bit worried that it might lead to stress cracks or other damage in the Winnebago ABS plastic. Also not exactly thrilled by drilling holes into the poptop for the bolts.. Has anyone used that combination on a EVC? How did it work out for you? Or do you have better suggestions? Wolfgang |
I have the Yakima rack on my Golf. It’s brilliant. Makes getting the kayak on much easier. I would not try to put one on my 1995 EVC. I think it’s asking for trouble. On Thu, Jul 4, 2024 at 5:59?PM Wolfgang Baudler via <wbaudler=[email protected]> wrote:

I have a 1993 pre Winnebago EVC. The previous owner installed the side loader brackets and used a kayak holding rack. I was given a set of yakima crossbars that fit perfectly.

There aren’t any stress cracks visible after many years of use. The bars do make a lot of wind noise and whistle. Scott On Jul 4, 2024, at 2:59?PM, Wolfgang Baudler via groups.io <wbaudler@...> wrote: |
Wolfgang, I have a 95 Eurocamper that has simple old style Thule racks on it when I bought it. Came complete with cracks along the sides but never extended over the top edge. Cracks were near the bolts but I don’t believe the bolts caused the cracking. I have repaired them but fully removing the top, separating the top from the bottom and using 3M product for the two different types of plastics.? It has held up well but I do see one crack showing at a point near the old ones.? I don’t put anything on the top. Good luck. Craig? I would glue two 1x3 strips of oak on the roof. Then attach the rack to

I don't have the Winnebago top, mine's a Weekender.? But I installed the tracks on my poptop and I think that they put less stress on the top (maybe even reinforce it) and also allow you to adjust the bars as needed.
GoWesty uses the track approach for their Winnebago roof rack kit, so they must work.? ?They have very helpful installation instructions.? So that's what I would do if I had a Winne. |
FWIW here is my solution on a Winnebago EVC. Notes:
?- I didn't want to drill holes on the part of the roof that keeps one dry :) ?- Custom made SS roof gutter simulators on the sides 30 cm long - I should have made them twice that long ??? - U can buy them but they are usually steel, too short, and too expensive for what they are ?- mounted towards the back to keep the weight as far back as possible ?- inside the roof side is a flat SS plate, so that each SS mount sandwiches the plastic roof ?- I added rear hinge gas struts on the inside of the roof to handle the extra weight on the back of the roof Also the Thule Hullavator has gas assist struts, which make getting it back up on roof pretty easy - I don't believe the Yakima equivalent solution has them. As well, I added bent aluminum rods with clamps to the rack uprights (inside and out) so that I can tie down paddle boards - (they really should have been part of the rack if they were thinking when they designed it). Ugly but functional. I didn't want to drill the rack uprights so the rod would right in-between the two legs of the upright - maybe someday... tho I'm afraid to weaken them. ? -- George Y 95 EVC Winnabago - Ottawa ON area |
I've often thought of installing the roof racks, I have them on every vehicle.? If I were to do it on my 95EVC I'd place some full length white oak strips in the grooves of the poptop bolted through the roof and through some 1/2X4 oak strips on the interior side, thinking it would stiffen up the plastic and keep it from cracking.

?By the way, I have yet to get any leaks in the 8 years I've had the tracks installed.? ?Technology is pretty good for sealing.? Again, GoWesty is not going to promote a problematic solution.? ?So I say, stick with the experts' tried and true Yakima track system and don't overthink it in fear of a non-issue.?

My Weekender has the rain gutter attachments installed for the last 15 years.? Never had a problem.? Also had them installed on my 87 4runner with a fiberglass top.? Worked great.? If you don't want to custom make rails for 1A racks yakima also sells them: MJ On Sat, Jul 6, 2024 at 12:10?PM Steve via <seaweedsteve=[email protected]> wrote: ?By the way, I have yet to get any leaks in the 8 years I've had the tracks installed.? ?Technology is pretty good for sealing.? @Pete here are some pics. I found this to be a very useful mod if you want anything on the roof - other wise the back end will sag and your toes will not have any room :). Also helps when lifting the top when stuff is on the roof. I think it would be too much if you don't have any roof stuff tho cuz it might be too hard to pull it down - could go with weaker struts in that case.
Struts I got from Princess Auto (Canada). You can look up the specs at . Pretty strong strut and maybe overkill. On the other bottom side I had to make an angle mount from aluminum angle for the bottom mount as they didn't sell the steel one (as pictured) any more. The only slightly tricky parts: ?- cutting the top 10mm ball stud length down to just the right length so as to be able to wiggle it in in the top U shaped metal bracket ?- the 10mm balls come in wide and narrow shoulder widths (i.e. between the ball and the mounting shoulder) - wide shoulders at the top cause the ball to protrude too much into the U shaped channel to allow you to get the socket end of the strut into the ball ????? - i.e. use narrow shouldered ones Let me know if you need more info. PS? - I've basically had this setup on the van for 7+ years with no issues with the top (so far :) ) -- George Y 95 EVC Winnabago - Ottawa ON area |
