report on 2000 cough
Michael G. McCarthy
I was "bounced" from the list too, at least temporarily. ?It seems messages were not being delivered as email in real time (but they were being posted to the eGroups website) and then suddenly I received a large batch were served to my email account. ?I don't know if any were skipped or not. ?(Generally, though, this eGroups thing is very reliable).

Regarding the "clicking" sound. ?I have it too, and have always had it during the time I've owned my EV (from about 75K miles to the present 100K miles). ?I have not been able to exactly pinpoint it (other than it's somewhere in the intake system I'm fairly sure), and it does seem "normal". ?? Does anyone else have this noise too? Well, I took the van in for it's 5000 miles maintenance and told them of the "cough" problem as well as the sliding door rattle and also a clicking sound sometimes heard at an idle..........want to know what they did? NOTHING! The computer showed NO errors of any kind..........the "clicking" sound I was told to be "normal"........and the rattle on the sliding door it "to be expected"................geez! I really noticed one thing, when I closed the doors (sliding especially) there was a solid "thump". Not a clunk but a nice solid thump. I was impressed that VW finnaly put some time/soundprrofing into their doors. SeanG 95 EVC 80 Westy |

Fair enough. A lazy dealer service department will say "No code, no problem," which isn't quite fair if the problem has happened more than occasionally. On my 97, the cough eventually gets more frequent so a code has eventually gotten logged, although now that mine is in for the 4th time for this problem, the dealer is taking my word for it, even though it didn't turn the light on after multiple coughs over the weekend. I'm not advocating speeding or reckless driving, but if you mash the accelerator right after you feel the cough, you might get it to cough again right away, which should log the code and turn the light on. It's worked for me. As for clicking, I hear it too, and have heard from this list that it could be the normal sounds of the fuel injection system, even if you can't always hear it. I haven't noticed mine changing or getting worse, so I tolerate it or turn up the stereo. As for the door rattle, I suggest you take it up with the dealer's service manager, and if you don't get satisfaction, make noise with VWoA. It doesn't always work, but some days they are more sympathetic than others. You spent a lot of money on your EV, part of which is attributable to warranty coverage, and you deserve to have it repaired. If they refuse and the rattle is really annoying, consider asking a good custom car audio shop about it. Even though you'd probably have to pay for it, these guys usually have some good vibration dampening products and techniques for reducing interior noise from body cavities and panels. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI finally got my 99 MV, 20K, into the dealer to see if there was a code for the cough. There wasn't one recorded. He thought it sounded like a programming issue on some chip somewhere. At least I got it noted while under warranty. So far, it's only happened the one time. Tim -----Original Message-----

Now that I think about it, this has happened on my 99 EVC at least twice

in the 10-12K mile range. Hasn't happened since in about 3K miles. This is sounding like more and more of an issue. I also have a '99 Jetta w/ a VR6 with about 15K miles on it now. It has never exhibited this behavious. Could be something unique with the EVC implementation of this engine... --Mike Wise Washington, DC '99 EVC '99 Jetta GLX '00 Outback
