Noise from roof luggage rack
I¡¯m getting noise from my luggage rack which sounds like rocks hitting it. Usually on the highway. I think it began while driving through a windy area. I have tightened everything down but I still get this noise. I¡¯ve heard of some luggage carriers cracking or people losing them entirely. I don¡¯t want that to be me. Do any of you have any suggestions? Paula |
Take it off and inspect the mounting hardware. When I checked mine everything was rusted out. Gowesty has a great stainless steel retro kit.? I also got some expanding foam from Home Depot and sprayed it under the front wedge, above that windshield, and it stopped the high speed, or really windy, flapping noise. Good luck. I had a similar problem and noticed some cracks appearing near the hold down? area.? That was several years ago and I solved it by drilling small holes at the end of the cracks to keep them from advancing and reinforcing the area under the hold downs with a rigid plastic type material (I used pieces of the old camper top, which I had replaced)? glued down with a Loctite product that I got by contacting Loctite.? It was a slow setting super glue material.? I have had no problems since and there is no continued cracking.

Yep! The wind, usually a cross wind, from passing eighteen wheelers lifting
the front of and getting under the above cab storage area. This happens rapidly causing the flapping sound. Yes, it would be best if it didn't come off on the highway. The storage pod should be removed and checked for cracks or weak spots. If any are found, reinforce them on the underside by gluing thin (like 3/16") 1 to 1 1/2 inch wide aluminum strips. The brackets attached to the roof are probably rusted and may be pulling away from the roof. Replace them with the stainless steel bracket kit available from GoWesty. I'd also replace the black rubber edging that runs around the pod also available from GoWesty.
That should do it. Kent Kirkley '97EVC -----Original Message-----

Thanks so much Jim, Kent and Darin for their advice. I will definitely follow through and repair the luggage carrier. Right now I¡¯m preparing for a short camping trip leaving on Monday. I am considering removing the carrier entirely until I have time to do the work. Do you foresee any problem removing it for a short time??

Paula Yes, the luggage carrier acts to streamline the airflow over the top of the pop top. Traveling at highway speeds with it off will force air against and possibly under the flat front of the pop top. This could (probably will) lift the pop top up secured only by the strap. If the strap isn't in place, the pop top will fly up, probably ruining the canvas. In the meantime, run some duct tape along the front and side edges of the luggage carrier.
It won't be pretty but will keep air from getting under it. Kent Kirkley
