New code - rough running misfire P1238

Hello group, I have a 99 Eurovan, 12 valve VR6, and I developed a misfire and a P1238 code on a recent trip.? It is an injector code for Cylinder #2.? Research indicates that it is not getting a ground signal, I believe?? My plan was to check ohm reading of the injectors from the loom connector there by the fuel pressure regulator and see if there was wire conductivity from there to the injector.? If that checks out, the next step, I believe, would be to follow that wire back towards the ECU and see if it is broken anywhere?? Does that sound reasonable?

It came completely out of the blue, and was somewhat intermittent at first, but now is a constant misfire or dead cylinder.

Any other ideas or insights are welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Sounds like the right approach to me.? I believe that you understand the ECU furnishes the ground for the injectors.? We can hope that it's an open injector or wire and not the ECU.

Agree with Duane.? Think the ohm value is between 12 and 16 ohms.? There may be electrical diagrams for this on this site.? V/R

So I had a few minutes to investigate the situation.? All injectors check out at 15 - 16 ohms except #2, which offers no reaction on the voltmeter whatsoever (open circuit).? This is checking at the 10 pin harness connector? near the FPR.? I tried to check that #2 connector at the injector was seated and it appears to be, so either the injector is dead or there is a break in the wire between point A and point B.? Either way the intake has to come off.??

Blah, I am not really in a spot to just get a new set of injectors.? Have any of you seen injector failures like this?? I have experienced the "short to B+" giving out of spec ohm readings before, but never just an open circuit reading across the injector.

Looking back I have replaced #2 injector before, back in or around 2014.?

There's lots of people reporting injector failures on VR6 engines, it's not uncommon. If you can swing it, replacing all 6 at once is the best course of action. Beware rebuilt injectors, they're usually just cleaned, and that doesn't address the failure of the coils which VR6 injectors seem to suffer.

I also replaced only the #2 injector due to wanting to be frugal.? Motor ran for years after that with no problem.? ?I can surmise that if you have an overheating event, like you lose one of your fan resistors, or both, now you are getting a superheated front of the motor under air conditioning modes.? This may, and I stress "may", cause this.? Once I fixed the injector and the fan resistors, no more injector failures.? ?For the AES motor, replacing the injectors is a tall order.? Don't know about the other? (2001 on).

Mike,

Yeah, I had a bout of injector problems about 7 - 8 years ago, and have had no issues relating to that for a good long while.? I do know looking back through the notes, #2 was replaced.? I have not had any overheating or using AC (I don't), and I know both fans are working / resistors good.? It maybe was it's time???

I have been dealing some problems with my kids cars that they are having, and also trying to get my 68 Bus back on the road.? But I suppose that pulling that intake manifold is going to have to be on the list here, I have just been avoiding driving it for the time being.??
?
I know it is a bit of a job, and I am not totally looking forward to it yet.
?
Thanks,? Mark

Well,
?
I finally took the time to look into the injector situation.? I pulled the intake manifold and separated the upper and lower potions to reveal the injectors.? One injector connector broke off while looking at it too long (#1), and then there are two dead injectors.? (#2 which I suspected, and then also #5, which I did not realize).? So 3 are for sure no good.? I had one good spare, so I sent the remaining good ones I had (total of 4) off to be cleaned, tested, checked, etc.? I am waiting on the verdict from that exercise to see how many I need to actually replace.
?
Ron from Bus Depot reached out somewhere, (here or on the samba?) mentioning that they carry aftermarket injectors that they have not had any problems with.? Man, I am leaning towards going this route.? The stock IWP022 are in excess of $100 each brand new.? I wonder is it better to have 6 aftermaket new injectors or 3 or 4 stock 200K + mile injectors and 2 or 3 zero mile stock injectors?? Or I could run with the good ones I have, and replace the bad ones with aftermarket.? I just am not in a great spot to drop $700 on a new set of stockers, and trying to get a good feeling about the options.
?
Sorry for my rambling.
?
Does anyone have a any feel for aftermarket injector quality?
?
Thanks.
