ham radio antenna on weekender??

Antonio Martinez

I am shopping for an antenna for a 2M radio. Mag mounts don't work, I
suppose it has to be a glass-mount. Any insights into antenna strategies
on the plastic roof ??

Antonio:

I have been using a Comet glass mount for 3 years and
am very pleased with the results. It is mounted on the
passenger side upper right hand corner of the
windshield and the coax is neatly hidden under and
along the body moldings. It does not have a lot of
range but hits all of the repeaters I need when
traveling. Our 93 is a GL so a roof mount would not
have been a problem but I have an aversion to drilling
holes in my roof and I wanted something more permanent
than a mag mount. The much maligned glass mount is a
satisfactory compromise for me.

Did you bring it down the pillar? If so how did you gain access?

Thanks for the reply. My Elmer is 'contributing" a 2M rig as bait -
needless to say, I've digested the books in short time. I expect to take
the test in the next 2 wks or so. Then maybe he'll quit holding the mike
hostage :/

I'm hoping to be setup by the time I hit the Smokies later in June. Hope
to chat with you then!

Tony,
I use a 3/8" mount from radio shack and a Newtronics 2m antennae (can't
recall the mode number, but it is the 3/8" mount of course). It ran around
$13 as I recall. I have used this particular model for over 25 years and
have been quite satisfied with it. Mounted it in the drain hole (a perfect
fit) on the passenger side below the wipers. I also drilled another drain
hole. Only problem is that I need to remove the antennae before completely
opening the hood. My intention (whenever I get around to it) is to machine a
new mount which will match the angle of the radio antennae to get around this
problem. If you do opt to mount through the plastic roof, be sure and come
up with some type of groundplane for the antennae to work against.

I had a roo bar on our Vanagon which was great for 27mhz and the larger spring
mounted Flying doctor whip, On the I have fashioned 2 (27mhz and UHF) brackets
that attach to the outer top bolts for each headlight and protrude under the hood
, good earthing and good transmission reports although they are obviously
radiating towards the front.
An old fix for fibreglass roofs is to glue aluminum foil on the underside for the
required ground plane, useful for boats and fibreglass bodied ambulances.

I had good results with glassmount 2 meter antennas. Used a SWR
meter to prune the length to 147 MHz and adjust the slug for minimum
SWR.
Alternatively, the U.S. Boat marine store used to have copper tape
that could be used for a ground plane.
