Big brake upgrade

Hi all,

I was hoping to upgrade my 95 EVC with the brakes from an '03 EV donor vehicle. For the front brakes, I was surprised that the knuckle to caliper spacing is different. I knew the bolts were larger and the knuckle would have to be drilled out but I didn't realize there was roughly an 8 mm gap that would need to be filled and longer bolts sourced. Have any of you tackled this problem?

Can I change the knuckle between those years??

On the rear, I plan on replacing the whole swing arm to go from drums to discs. I'm curious now if there are surprises waiting for me on doing that.

I really want to improve the braking on the 95 camper because I've already had one accident due to not being able to slow down quickly enough. Any advice on this conversion will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kent

On my ‘95 I put vented discs on the front, new shoes in the rear and braided lines all around. The discs are made by the company that supplies BMW. This solved the problem for me.?

I haven’t done the brake upgrade in a long time. Maybe a decade. But I’m fairly sure I swapped the whole lower control arm and upright to gain the big ball joints and put in new poly bushings?

I can’t help too much on such a big upgrade.??I would suggest you look at the UK T4 forum (T4 being the name for European in europe).??From memory, some there did porsche caliber upgrades (e.g.??)

I did a much more modest upgrade to my 95.??Stainless lines all around to replace the old rubber lines.??Zimmerman Vented and drilled disks (1LE Lucas/Girling) oem 701 615 301 A/D ( 280x24mm).??Black diamond performance pads.

Made a good difference to mine but its still not great.

Thanks for the quick input!? The Porsche upgrade is pretty cool. I'll keep it in mind if I fail using the parts that I have.?

I hadn't considered using the lower control arm with the hub knuckle.? I'll keep that in mind.?

I'm still wondering if anyone has managed to source bolts and spacers to use the '01-'03 caliper on the '95?? Maybe it's not possible.

Has anyone done the rear swingarm to upgrade to discs back there?? Problems?

Thanks everyone!
Kent

I’ve done both the early T4 rear drum brake to disc brake upgrade with the trailing arms from a 96+ T4 my old 93 T4 as well as the bigger front caliper 01-03 upgrade and modest rear disc and caliper upgrade on my 2000. In my notes after sourcing the 01-03 T4 calipers and brakes and new bolts from the dealer the only other mod I made was drilling out the mounting holes from 16m to 18m—no spacers were used that I recall. I’ll keep digging for the front caliper play by play but here’s the rear:

Justin,
Thanks for the link to your blog. That is very helpful to see and it looks like the ebrake hooked up fine. I wondered about that.?

I wonder if the front knuckle on your 2000 is different than the 95 since it already had 16” wheels, I think?

I believe I’ve read the blog before because I knew I would have to enlarge the holes. I was probably reading’s it in hopes of installing a tdi eventually. I’ve been gathering parts for that for a while but the brake’s really need to be dealt with and the old I5 keeps going.

Thanks,
Kent

Hi Kent,?
?The 2000 models still had 15” wheels and the smaller disc brakes hence my upgrades.? Significant difference w braking performance with the front caliper upgrade less so w the rear. I’m not sure if the front knuckle is different on the 2000 compared to the 95 as I haven’t done that upgrade?before on the early T4 models so can’t offer useful info there.?

I don’t think I ever made a pithy post on the blog about that front caliper upgrade unfortunately…. Here’s the only mention I can find but there’s not much info there only the promise of more to come:

?
you can see the 17” OE VW Passat wheels I used and the big calipers showing ;-).

Zimmerman rotors, braided lines, new shoes in back- the van, '95 MT, ?stops as well as it will. I don't tow anything and travel alone, never in any hurry. This upgrade solved my concerns.
