T4 Paradise
To: EV Group
I visited Koblenz, Germany on business two weeks ago and had an opportunity to spend a full hour in a beautiful showroom full of various VW vans and trucks. It was T4 paradise. I looked over and sat in several models as I sipped my complimentary coffee. I like to collect brochures and here are the ones I picked up. If anyone has a questions on features I'll try to answer them. I don't read German or feel I am an expert on these but have the pictures to describe. - Der Transporter - Der Caravelle ( EuroVan GLS is derived from this) - Der Multivan (MV and MV Weekender are derived from this) - Der neure Multivan Atlantis( this was a beautiful special edition of the Multivan with grey/blue seating fabric that was sharp. It has the neat reversible center seats with the option of having a cooler in place of the right center seat. List price was 73,000 DM list or about $36,000 US with the 2.8 Otto V6. The showroom model had many options including a navigation system built into the dash and was prices in the 85,000 DM area with taxes. They also have a 2.5 liter TDI with 5 speed listing for 57,645 DM or $29,000 US. Wish we had this model in North America! I would consider it. ) - Der California Coach ( closest we have is the Winnebago camper but this model offers many more variations as they all do) - Der California Advantage (looks like a special edition Coach) - Der Colorado ( now we are getting serious. This looks like the front of the Eurovan pasted onto a camper. Like the Rialta I believe.) - Der Missouri ( not the T4 platform. I think it is an LT platform. It looks nicer than my house on the inside!!) A far cry from my local NJ dealer where it is a rare sight to even see any EV in the parking lot. Ron '93 MV N.J. |

I am considering importing one of these into Canada. Only problem is I must wait a few more years until the first ones built are 15 years old and then it will be an antique and importation permited. To: EV Group... Ron: The T4 camper is great. I was in Europe for a year, just traveling with my family, and had the opportunity to drive a 1998 California Joker for 8 months and put 45,000 Km on it. (it's interesting, the German / European van is a California Joker, but the American/Candian is a Eurovan) When I went over, I had shipped my '91 Westie and had fun driving and camping. However, outside of Rome, while we were in a supermarket, someone stole the van and just about everything we had (cameras, computers, children toys, film, etc.) When we got back to our apartment in Germany, a local dealer had a used '98 T4 California Joker for sale. What a van. It has Camping-Gas 907 cylinder for the stove only. The refrig runs off of 12v, and can run for 4-5 days on the aux battery without draining it, and keep a temp. of ~4C the whole time. The only change on the outside is the electrical plug in. It doesn't have a heater, but that could be easily added I'm sure. The other nice features are the size, the same as a Weekender and the fact you can get a TDI (diesel engine) with a 5 speed man. Transmission. Great power (easily does 170Kmph cruising on the autobahn). I wish they would import this model inside of the Winnie. Well, I could go on and on.... -- Christopher Craig, MN, ARNP ccraig@... Tobi,
I walked into both the Colorado and the Missouri. I was very impressed with the quality of the cabinetry in both. Of course the Missouri was the most spacious but they both impressed me as being very roomy for a couple with a child or two. Fitting in my family of five might be a bit tough. I believe the Missouri offered the added feature of a full shower in the bathroom. The Colorado was much nicer looking since it has the T4 front end. The Colorado brochure shows sleeping space for four ( two on top front area and two on the first level when the table is lowered). Ron |

I had plans to adapt a Dometic propane unit to my '74 Westy, but now I'm looking at the compressor units to see if one will fit. My Westy currently has a Dometic 12V/110V unit only, that does not use propane. The downside to the compressor units is the noise. You can hear the compressor running and kicking on and off. The refrigerator on my 99 TDI California Coach is made by Electrolux
and works on 12V. You can hear the compresor when it?s working but only if put great interest..(maybe I?m deaf). I only hear it while sleeping and not always. I?m the one who posted a rear hatch glass explosion. My VW dealer changed it under warranty with a big smile. they told me that 4 other glasses exploded this easter within their customers, all in california coach vans. The reason? A batch of bad glasses, bla, bla ,bla, no problemo amigo, everything is under control, bla bla.. They even lent me a striped down transporter while they changed the glass. By the way, am I the only spanish in the list? Is everybody american? europeans? Does anybody know the URL to the westfalia werke web site?
