Weekender & MV storage ideas

Paul Rousseau

Here are a couple of neat storage ideas for Weekender & MV (mine is a
93) I recently discovered.

1) The plastic face plate under the rear bench is just clipped on.
It can very easily be removed and this gives you access to storage
space under bench, accessible from within the van (the 99 and 00 have
little openings here). It doesn't look as good, but it can easily be
put on or removed as necessary (for example, remove for weekend).
For a nicer look, you could probably cut it into pieces and just
cover both ends and the middle, leaving two nice size openings for
storage.

2) In the weekender, when you pop the roof, the top bed only hinges
up and latches on the roof giving you limited head room. I found
that if you push the bed close to where it would latch and pull, you
can disengage the hinges. You can then lift that section of bed and
lay it on top of the lower bed section. This is quite easy to do
once you get the hang of it (the hinges seem to be designed this way,
clever Germans). This has 3 nice advantages compared to latching:
-you have much more headroom inside
-It creates a very nice storage shelf once you are parked (if you
don't use the top bed, or just for the evening)
-Once you feel comfortable, you can remove that "death to your head"
latch on the pop top and be safer sleeeping upstairs.

In Germany you can buy an aftermarket kit to replace this panel with a fold
down door. It has a cutout in it for the handle, and it folds flat to allow
access under your seat.

I would think it would be easy to make this yourself.

<< Steve-

Can you get this kit to make the panel fold down? It sounds like a
good idea. I have a 99 EVc. Also, I'd be interested in alloy
wheels,
if the load rating is adequate for the EVC.
Thanks- Mary Schilpp

Mary,

I'll check pricing and let you know.

I have an email in to try and find the load rating. Do you have an idea what
your EVC weighs?

My 99EVC says it weighs 5200 lbs. dry and no passengers.

Steve,
Me too! BTW, I think my "99 comes in at about 6000 lbs loaded. One of these
days I think I will stop in at a weigh station and have it checked.
