93 EV HOT HOT HOT - and no fans kicking on....please advise

Team Degenerate Motorsports

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently my van has been seeing temps way higher than normal. The van
usually operates at the 1/2 way mark on the temp gauge. I had a few
scares returning from NC recently when stuck in highway traffic on NJX
and around GW bridge tolls... then more in cross bronx. You know the
area - real fun for sure if it did spew for real! It had been driven
all day 10+ hours at that point with minimal stops to cool off. Once the
needle was near the max mark and then the temp warning light came on (
as I was three cars from the toll ) so I cranked the heat and after a
few minutes the light went off but the needle stayed way up till I got
moving at highway speed again. Whew... hey that heat thing does work
;-)

Now even on short local trips it will rise quickly if I'm
stopped/slowed.

Coolant flushed 4/13 - no other related items ever worked on to my
knowledge.

I noticed that the noisy fan does not come on when the vehicle is hot
nor when it is shut off upon returning home like it used to. AC also
seems weird... like it should stay kicking cold air longer than it does
and also give real cold air out the dash on that left setting which it
does not.

Also noticed a new noise that appears when the van gets hot - around 3/4
mark. the noise is a whirring sort of thing that comes and goes with
throttle application

I'm hoping you'll tell me it's some relays behind the drivers
headlight......... could that be it? What else should I replace?? Is
there a high/low speed fan switch? I know I need a Bentley but it's race
season and I need new slicks!!!!!!!

There is definitely no fan on even when the vehicle is real hot and
stopped.

Any good sources for parts you folks can recommend would be great - the
10% discount the dealer gives is not good enough

Thanks so much for reading - PLEASE HELP ME!!!! before this things
explodes and I can't use it.

Got enough coolant right?

If you have pin feathers are they free to move?

There are also some big resistors behind the sheet metal cover under
the drivers headlight. If these are burned out...... bad things
happen. So, take a piece of bent coat hanger wire and pop off this
cover. It comes off easy, just a little tug at each corner. You
should see the resistors and they should be maybe green but sure not
crispy looking. Pull the plug, Check the continuity, if its zero,
they bad.

There is also a temp switch on the plastic coolant outlet fitting on
the head. Not sure if it is the top one or bottom one but if you get
one from a parts place you will know what to look for then. Or pull
one connector (ignition on but engine off) and see what the coolant
gage does. You want the sensor that is NOT for the gage.

Bill, it doesn't sound good at all.
Your symptoms above I had also on my 93 EV GL just before the A/C
compressor exploded.

Coolant flushed 4/13 - no other related items ever worked on to my
knowledge.

This is "classic" sign of the resistors gone bad. (the two underneath
the left headlight)
My EV had the same symptom.

Also noticed a new noise that appears when the van gets hot - around 3/4
mark. the noise is a whirring sort of thing that comes and goes with

I too had the same sound. I don't recall many (if any) on this list ever
describing this sound, but it was real for me. I thought it was almost
like a groaning type sound.
I am curious, does this sound happen all the time? I think I recall my
sound only happened when the A/C was on.

I'm hoping you'll tell me it's some relays behind the drivers
headlight......... could that be it? What else should I replace?? Is

As before, it clearly sounds like the 2 series resistors underneath the
left headlight.

When my EV exploded, it was middle of hot summer, I had just parked the
van and just walking into a store when I heard this massive BOOM! One of
the hoses to the compressor had blown off, spraying the engine area, in
particular, the distributor had to be replaced, along with the auxillary
cooling gizmo (on the bottom of the engine that provides extra cooling
when the engine shuts down)

Needless to say, I would not turn the A/C on at all, and if the temp
rises above 3/4, I would shut it down.
And get the series resistors checked ASAP, and then the A/C, primarily,
the receiver/dryer, which has had problems, and then the compressor.
I hope you get a bonus or something, as you will probably need it, big
time.

Lots of luck,
Wade

I don't recall now, but my EV had perhaps 60,000 miles or less, when my
fun began.

It is easy, BUT you first have to remove the front grille, by removing
the Phillips head screws on the top of it. Then remove the two 10?mm
screws on the left side of the metal plate, then gently pull/wiggle on
the right side of the plate to release the "clip".
(you cannot get to the screws until the grille is removed)
