The mirrors on my '93 seemed prone to vibration of late and upon inspection
I saw that the top arm that attaches them to the door looked broken. If I
pushed the mirrors inward (toward the door) they would straighten out until
I closed the door, or hit a bump or such. I removed them from the door this
weekend to investigate and saw that the upper arm was ruined in both
mirrors. There is a plastic molded channel that once held some kind of
tension strap- metal, perhaps spring loaded or locking to a rubber strap (I
couldn't see the end of it) with a loop at the visible end. In both cases
the plastic had fatigued and was well beyond repair. I was thinking of
using some epoxy and just gluing the whole enchilada together, but by doing
this I'd forsake the ability to fold the mirrors to the door. I ended up
using an "S" shaped metal wire, one end hooked through the loop of the
tensioning strap, and the other hooked to the edge of part of the inner
plastic. I took it for a bumpy ride and slammed the doors a few times as my
wife is apt to do, and so far it's held nicely. I imagine the odds of the
s-hook holding when the mirror is folded inward about 50-50, but if it comes
free it's easily and cheaply replaced.
