Snow Tire -Reply

Hi again Volks,no more than the original Michelin Agilis tires? Is it a disaster, OK,I'd rate it as OK, certainly not bad or a disaster. I've been through 2 Colorado winters with my '97 EVC with nothing but the pathetic OEM Goodyear tires and not had any problems. For that matter, I've lived in Colorado for more than 30 years and have seldom had snow tires. In the front range area of Colorado where I live, we get snow often, but it is uncommon for it to stay on the roads for more than a few days at a time. Good all-season radials with good tread on them are OK most of the time. If you need to drive in winter weather conditions (deep snow, or snow and ice), often then snow tires are probably a good idea. The weight and front-wheel drive help overcome some of the traction problems of a vehicle this size when starting from a stop. On the other hand, the weight contributes to much longer stopping distances in slippery conditions. ABS and traction control help only slightly. They are no substitute for careful driving. It made it through the Colorado winter pretty well last year. I find it to be very sure footed. John Dave Stedman wrote:

Dave,
Drove Flying Carpet for two winters in Maine in described snow, slush, ice. Worked fine as long as one remembers the thing weighs three tons....very critical to recall as you try to stop suddenly. The Goodyears seemed acceptable to me for 40,072 miles in all conditions. After hearing of the poor wear that others report for the Goodyears, I can only tell of normal tire maintenance jobs I did...but, I don't ever drive at 80 mph and prefer travelling below 55 so I can see something as I tour. Of course I'm retired and have a choice; we even travel on two lane roads instead of those other fast lane expressways. That may be the difference in tire mileage. One tire was defective and wore badly...square? The other four were fine and I have one left for a spare with my new Agilli's from Mich. Looking forward to a long respite from difficulty but the Goodyears seemed okay. We're still running the original shocks, too. Again, these seem to be effective for our demands. Gary from Maine |
