1993- VW Eurovan - alternator smoke

My Eurovan has been acting weird lately. Most recently, the alternator started to smoke.

?

It has been having issues starting/stalling and rough idle. ?Originally, I suspected a battery problem and just general lack of maintenance (not considering the alternator).
I trickle charged the battery, but it was already prob 5 years old and had been run down a few times. ?So I bought a replacement battery.

?

I drove it after the new battery (maybe 60 minutes of driving total), but it seemed a bit off. ?When I parked at home and went to start it again a few days later, the battery was dead.

Still not thinking about the alternator, I thought maybe parasitic. ?So I disconnected most accessories and trickle charged my new battery back to 12.6.

?

And yesterday, I started it again... and the video above happened. ?The alternator was smoking. As far as I know, the alternator has not been replaced in the time I've owned it. Crazy, almost 12 years.

Bought an aftermarket and getting ready to install (my Eurovan is in a "should I keep it" state, a lot of rust and some other issues)... otherwise I'd buy Bosch/OEM.
But right now, just trying to determine (hopefully) that the faulty alternator has been causing some irregular issues.

Just??about replacement. ?Anybody else have any good tips for replacement or general thoughts on my Eurovan/alternator?

Finished the new alternator install.? Starts right up.? The smoking alternator could have been original unit for all I know.

Some photos and info -?

Up next is my vacuum hose from engine to MAP sensor in ECU.? Just waiting on new hose to arrive from Europarts-SD (prob could have gone to a local auto parts, but wanted to not mess around and worth it for an extra $8).? Pretty sure the current vacuum hose has worn to have a small leak in it, and I'm hoping that replacing that will resolve my stalling issue (and seems like has been running rich).
