Under hood insulation?

I recently had to remove the hood insulation (what is left of it--there are some big holes from animals that have used it as bedding material) in order to access the wiper nozzles for replacement of the rubber grommet. Is this hood insulation necessary? I can put it back in, but it's probably 60% left. Thanks, Roger
