Re: It Makes Me Sick To Bring This Up... Eurovan Tires

Thanks for the tire survey link!? That sorta seals the deal on sizing for me too.? Seems like 235/60 r16 will work well on my lifted and leveled EVC.? Gives me lots of choices when considering the other sizes that will also fit.??

Re: Grinding noise

Been following a bit.? The noise on turns... that sounds like CV to me.
Where are your prices from?? Seem high.
(2) new complete for $99/each from Europarts-SD

Have you lifted or adjusted torsions?? How is the rest of your suspension?
I ask because after I did a torsion bar lift (and spacers in back) I noticed CV noise (ultimately a failure... not sure if coincidence or not).

Doing CVs is pretty easy.? I don't see why you would not do them if you don't know the status.? I'd try that first and then consider bearings.

Does the noise seem to only come from one side... or both?? Maybe I missed that.

Walmart.com has a number of Nokian Entyre 2.0 sizes in both 16" & 17" available and in stock.? I bought a set of these in 225/60 R16 102H earlier this year and they are fine.?

Just an FYI that my local Walmart automotive centers would not install them because one of the EVC jack points is close to the propane tank/gray water drain assembly.? Apparently Walmart Corporate told its automotive centers not to assume the risk of damage in such cases.? No worries, my nearby Les Schwab was happy to mount them.?

It depends on the model year.? Those for 2000 and older are $100 or so.? 2001 and up (AXK/AMV engine) are different and fewer, so ~$400-500 each.? On the new ones, if you get both, be VERY careful to keep track of which side they're for.? There's about 1/4" difference, so doing them wrong will ruin at least one.

Re: Grinding noise

If you replace just the CB joint and not the complete axle a word of caution. ? I bought a CV joint alone after going through the same question you have. Ordered what should have fit only to find the number of splines on my axle were actually different then that on the CV.?

So if you can do it in stages I¡¯d pull the unit out and remove the CV (spring clip holds it to the axle) then count the splines and order accordingly.

The other caution is really clean the socket head bolts on the transmission flange well so the 12 point or 6 point fits well.

Hope that helps.

Steve,
You might try sourcing your half shafts from these two retailers who are very supportive of our beloved vans.? Much better pricing that what it seems you've found so far:
?

I've ordered from both and (IMHO) both have very good pricing on a wide range of Eurovan parts and good customer service.

Thanks

Sam: - I'm based out of Southern New Mexico.? Silver City.? ?That's where the van Winters.? I Winter further South !?

Mucho thanks for your help.?

Re: Grinding noise

Thanks for all the great advice folks.??
My web access is spotty, sorry.? I am still in CA, working my way to New Mexico where I'll park the van for the Winter.?I probably over-represented the level of noise/vibration.? ? ? I just did a trip North CA to South Tuesday and no increase in symptoms, just noticing it accelerating on circling turns with those on-ramps!? I never would have noticed it on the open highway.? ? I departed from my only possible spot to work on it but am feeling like I will make it back....? We will see!??

And I'm registering the comments about needing a press to do the work, so I'll keep that in mind when doing the work.? ?I watched videos of non-hydraulic methods with VW / Audi bearings and am a decent mechanic so we'll see how that goes.? Maybe I can work it out with some variation on the loaner tools and/or cobble something together using a hammer and sockets etc.? I've done plenty of common front end work - on mini pickups mostly, nothing German. FWD and sealed wheel bearings are new to me.? ??

The big question is how much to tackle at once with those $10+ bolts and the security of several things well done adding a good incentive to lump the big jobs together.??

From my understanding, the two things that typically require pulling the spindle and hub are the CV-Joints and the bearings.? Other u, ball-joints, tie rod ends wouldn't normally need that, but again, I have zero experience on German vehicles.? And the CV-joints may be what's failing.? I haven't jacked it up yet to check, I admit!? Not actually an easy option at the moment.? ?I had minimal free time and spent it checking the differential.? Not running that while dry was priority.?

They¡¯re available in 215/65/16 as well, if you¡¯re concerned about clearance. The speedometer will be slower by 3% (so 60mph indicated = 62mph actual).
Good recommendation.

Re: It Makes Me Sick To Bring This Up... Eurovan Tires

I'm on my second set of Bridgestone "Dueler" H/L 422 in 215/65 102V. They look exactly the same as what Bridgestone calls the "Ecopia" H/L 422 Plus. They still seem to have the "Dueler" brand in a sport version, but its not the same as what I have, so I would go with the?"Ecopia" H/L 422 Plus.

I'm really really happy with these tires... very quiet, good mileage, good handling. Spedometer is accurate.

Re: It Makes Me Sick To Bring This Up... Eurovan Tires

I have been running 215/65 R16 Nokian Entires but they are no longer available per Nokian.? However, the tire size works OK.? I have installed Fox shocks on the front wheels and these tires are quite wide and will rub at maximum turn on the reservoir hoses if those hoses are not positioned properly.

With the CaveVan 1.5¡± spacers and the right wheels (et50 to 42) ?you can step up to 225/70/16 and have about 45 more tires choices.

Thanks again Alex.??

Maybe I'm too much of a snob but I'm hesitant to go with the Milestar tires since I've never heard of them and not finding much in the way of reviews or input about them.??

I'm thinking now about the BRIDGESTONE ECOPIA H/L 422 PLUS in 215 /65 R16 102V .? Looks like that's the only size of that tire available that would fit.

I went to the tire/wheel calc link you sent, and I have to admit, it made my head hurt.? LOL

I would guess a 215 65 r16 would fit fine based on the fact that mine is lifted and leveled, however, does anyone run that size and have you had any issues????

Thanks!

I use this tire/wheel size calculator to make sure it¡¯s not going to cause issues:?

Good options that are available in the above size:?
Vredestein Quatrac (replaces Quatrac5)
Continental 4x4Contact
Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422Plus (these are ¡°low rolling resistance¡± for better mileage)
