Re: V10-P Emco Chuck Removal

One piece of advice I would give if you're manhandling it (if you haven't already removed the Power feed gearbox) is definitely remove the selector knob(s) from the front (it unscrews with a flat wrench/spanner - just pull the outer to reveal the flats). If it rolls and lands on the front this will break the selector arm for the gearbox and they can be ... troublesome ... to find replacements for. I speak from experience here. (OK I repaired mine but it ain't pretty)

They can be pretty stuck and care has to be taken when undoing them. In regular situations, you put the gearbox in the lowest gear and unscrew the thing by hand(s). Jerking it makes sense as well... but if that is not enough to loosen the thing you'll want to search for "stuck chuck" topics. No hammers, levers, etc.
In any case, the whole machine is on the order of 150kg, chuck is maybe 10kg of that and tailstock is another 10kg, so not much better. Taking off other pieces is not worth the trouble unless you intend to strip it all down anyway.
You'll need an engine hoist or some sort of crane to lift it by yourself. Two young (and athletic) people can just about move the thing, three are better if you can find them.

Re: V10-P Emco Chuck Removal

Best way, put straps through the webbing in between the ways. I don't have a picture of that exact setup, I have one when I've had the leadscrew and feedshaft off, so I just strapped it around the bed. You can't do that when it's assembled as it will bend the leadscrew and feedshaft.
image.png

This is about where you want the straps to land - yes, it says "lift point" on those pieces of tape :) I remember I marked them when I found a good balance point.
That was with empty headstock, no norton box, no change gears and no tailstock, but possibly with the stand so maybe move the left one a bit further left. Don't lift by chuck, headstock or carriage. As long as you're strapped to the bed, you're probably fine.
Thing is not exactly top heavy but it's not far off either. I don't remember it trying to capsize on me (like a ship), but wiggle it a bit when it's barely off the floor to check for that.

oh yeah, good luck and be safe :)

Re: 1984 V10P - should I sell it?

Hi Len,?
?
Thanks for your pricing input and for your editing compliment!?
?
Editing was self taught, or rather YouTube taught. I've had a camera since I shot for the High School newspaper in 1970, so I've always been seeing the world thru a lens. The EOS R came with video capability so I shot some.. Found Davinci Resolve was (and is) free and off I went. That's part of why the lathe is going.? I have too many hobbies to keep up with them all!? That and 3D printing could probably accomplish the oddball projects I end up with.?
?
I'll see what the movers say about putting the lathe in the basement. I, with two other older friends got it out of the basement in Dayton OH by taking it apart and having a refridgerator dolly at hand. So, yeah, it is possible. But will I use it??
?
Thanks for your reply,
?

Emco V10P with mill and many tools. New 1984 from my wife's uncle. I brought it to Florida from Dayton in 2006 and have used it to turn plastic, brass, aluminum and the odd steel part. It all works. I am moving and have decided to sell the lathe. Anyone interested, or interested in more information please let me know.?
Video of the lathe in action -?

Re: 1984 V10P - should I sell it?

I paid $2k for a well tooled, but older (blue), V10P about 10 years ago. It seems like you should be able to find a local buyer in that range, though I think the used market for manual machines has softened a bit. OTOH, you can definitely get a V10P down a stairs by taking it apart and having two strong bodies. Lastly, that video was excellent. Did you pick up those video skills yourself, or have someone shoot it for you?

Re: Norton box Strip/Rebuild

Sorry, I don't have the imperial one... this is how my metric set looks. Service parts list has them in M and Ww variant, so they are different.

Yes, if I can get the tooth counts I can then source them, I think I can get a blank made up for the leadscrew gear (currently 32T) and the gearbox output gear is pretty plain (the one I have is 20T - counted it today) I should be able to get it running.

Re: Dro

I really like TouchDRO and did this set up on my V10P because I wanted it be as small and out of the way as possible: https://lensprojects.com/2015/09/27/touchdro-machine-position-digital-readout/

Re: 1984 V10P - should I sell it?

Hi Carey beautifull job till end of your videos i was curiouse what it will be and probably 1 min befor end i catch it :)) beautiful flaut , i am heard lathe but not flaut :))?

Thanks for the reply Roman. I thought I would join and make an initial post to confirm everything is hooked up properly, I will post some photos soon. In the meantime, here's a video that shows what I mostly did with the lathe.?

Emco V10P new 1984 from my wife's uncle. I brought it to Florida from Dayton in 2006 and have used it to turn plastic, brass, aluminum and the odd steel part. It all works. I am moving and have decided to sell the lathe. Anyone interested, or interested in more information please let me know.?

Oops, didn't realize full emails addresses get truncated. Shawn's email address is gmail-address.

Re: 1984 V10P - should I sell it?

I'm up in Greeley. If you're moving to Colorado you might be interested in the "Colorado Society of Model and Experimental Engineers" (CSMEE). We get together once or twice a year to chat about projects we're working on; the group has a pretty wide range of interests. Shawn Leloup (presidentcsmee@...) is the main contact for that group.

Re: Dro

Thanks for the suggestions :)
?
All very good ???
?
I over spent a bit due to a bad mill motor and chuck ! So I decided to use :
?
Msure linear mag scales with various displays for the 3 axis I¡¯m looking for ¡
?
Msure is a uk company with very cost effective products , They have 3 main types for lathes and mills ,?
1) First one looks like a calliper without jaws and the read out is small and ends up tucked away a bit fir the Z axis of the lathe, This one worked well on my mini proxxon.
?
2) Second type has a transverse display great for cross slide as the display oriented correctly.
?
3) Type three has a remote display with magnets and features Abs/Inc ¡ This one suits the Z axis of the lathe and comes in up to 600mm travel !
?
So all in 3 scales were ?110 delivered!
?
limitations :
?
Resolution 0.01 mm only (all types)
?
fairly bad accuracy over 300mm or so but workable with caliper checks on your part if it¡¯s long¡. Over 100mm it¡¯s pretty good (within 0.01mm) which for most jobs is good enough..
?
Displays not in one location but the magnetic remote display type is very flexible..
?
No PCD function?
?
So if you¡¯re on a tight budget and sneak up on dimensions I think it¡¯s a good solution and the product vs price is exceptional!!
?
Cheers R

I'll
need a couple of new bearings when I reassemble the V10p box but I've
either got these (6201) or they're on order (6301).
I now have another issue that can't be solved by impact. The outpur
gear
that connects to the leadscrew - apparently there's a Metric and an
Imperial variant. Obviously I have the Metric one, however I need an
Imperial one (or at least the number of teeth so I can get one made up.
The Metric one has 32 teeth but this feels just a fraction too big to
fit and get the bolts in the 'bearing block'* I have. (the gearbox
output gear might also be different - they have subtly different part
numbers).
Basically what I need to know is what the numbers of teeth the little
gear on the end of the Norton Gearbox output shaft and the 'Leadscrew
Drive Gear (English)* have, once I know what these are I can either buy
or make replacements.

Yeah, not mine...cheap atm:

Re: 1984 V10P - should I sell it?

To add some data points: I purchased a v10p in November 2024 for ~$2K. Another recently sold in my area (Colorado) for the same amount.?
?
When I was looking for a lathe, part of my thought process was "how much it would cost to purchase a new lathe with similar specs?"?
The two other lathes I was looking at in November were the Precision Matthews 10" x 22" (or 10" x 36") and Grizzly 10" x 22" (though they're not exactly equivalent and in many respects I prefer the v10p). Both of those have gone up in price quite a bit in the last couple months and are now ~$4-4.5K once you've paid tax and shipping. Asking more than $2K may be reasonable, especially if it's well equipped and in good condition.
?
Hope that helps.
Joe
