Re: Maximat 7 mill head motor question

Hi Rikcky thank you i will have look ,regards Roman

I did add a photo album call mill wiring?
?
in there is a picture of the motor plate I have if that helps ?
?
my capacitor is 8uf 400v

confirmed to be correct spec :)

Carvel, I checked my US motor and find no markings regarding the capacitor. However, I don't know if this will help (due to my being ill versed in electronics); but, I can get photos of the markings on the capacitor for my Maximat 7, if desired.

Re: Dro

I added a 3-axis DRO many years ago and I could not imagine having to go back to the manual dials. In fact, the z-axis died on me so I ordered a replacement computer (I kept the original glass scales and just matched the model of the DRO) and literally just installed it on Saturday. The original install took a while with quite a few custom fabricated brackets, but it was absolutely worth it IMO. The model I got was the GCS900-3D. The original one I got from ebay, but the replacement one I got from Aliexpress (). They’re cheap Chinese quality, but the computer lasted me for almost a decade and the scales are still perfect.

?

Here’s a blog with some Youtube videos I did way back when to document it. Hope this helps

May well have been covered but …..

?

what’s the opinions here on adding a Dro and which one ?

?

I have a small proxxon which I added a Dro to the carriage and simply used a good Dti behind the cross slide as a when needed , It works well especially for the milling attachment side of things …

?

Probably something better and easier to use would be good for a bigger lathe :)

Morning Vedran and colleagues

In this case this is a 240V 50Hz UK motor which is a 3 phase motor adapted for use on one phase with a capacitor

So it doesn’t have any capacitor value on the name plate as the Cap is not normally applicable

?

The US 60Hz motor is a two winding split phase motor so it might well be marked but I don’t have sight of one so maybe one of our US members can advise ?

The manual does come to our rescue though with 8uF for the UK 240V 50Hz motor and 20uF for the US 115V 60Hz motor ?

Single phase motors Emco used tend to have required capacitance printed on the nameplate so you can check that as well. One of the 4 wires should definitely be ground. If neither of the 4 has a continuity to the motor housing it was not rewired properly.

If you look at the wiring diagram you will notice that this is actually a small 3 phase motor which is used on single phase by permanently supplying the 3rd phase via a capacitor to simulate the phase shift? . . .? so yes the Cap is permanently in circuit

Being basically 3 phase it lends itself to be being fed by a small vfd without the Cap , in which case apart from the variable speed it develops an additional 20% of power compared to the capacitor configuration

since I can’t see a centrifugal switch I’m guessing the design is for a running capacitor only,?

It won’t hurt to put a new one on and hopefully the company looking at the ?motor return it quickly!

I did select a different range in ohms and got a charge in and out so it’s not totally bad but unknown as you say !

?

I wonder if it’s the correct value at 8 uf

?

seems a bit on the low side, If anyone knows what they have that would be great to compare known working machines ……

1/4 to 1/3 HP motor should do OK with 30-50 microfarad starting caps and with about 6-8 microfarads for a running cap.?

You’ll need a special tester that can test capacitors; a simple continuity test does not accurately show you whether the cap is good or bad. Here’s a quick youtube video giving some more info:

Thanks chaps :)

?

I am a little clearer on how to proceed…..

?

the capacitor seems to be ‘open’ according to basic testing with my multimeter set to continuity chime/buzz, I don’t seem to be able to get a chirp or any type of reading….

?

the motor is 1 phase

?

the wires joined together are paired due to the cable having one extra core so some one just used it up ! Lol

?

the information on the motor wires posted here is perfect ;) I think I can wire it back in safely.

?

the key on the motor shaft is a very good point as it did fall out when I took the motor off and I remember thinking that’s a tiny part I could have lost !

?

the motor has gone off to be checked out properly just in case there is an underlying problem?

?

Unfortunately the Capacitor has a bit of its markings rubbed off but I think says :

?

8 Uf

?

400v

?

not sure if it is continuous rating but in any case if that spec is correct I can get the motor repair shop to supply a new one :)

?

re the spindle bearings…..Thank goodness they are ok and still tight!

Re: Maximat 7 mill head motor issues

Hi R about torque is possibile somebody take out motor and he dont put back key in to keyway this key has small lock pin ,so take out motor and be sure this key is there ,other issue can be some of your tufnol gear has no teeth or gear on quill spindel has no key, so you have to open mill lid with motor and check up it inside ,long time a go i had similar problem just key was gone :)?good luck Roman

Hello gentlemen?
?
I’m new here and new to vintage Emco machines too :)
?
my background is marine engineering and I have questions about my new machine that more experienced ppl will likely know !
?
First issue and the main one is the mill motor spins over but has no torque, you can stop the spindle by hand even in low gear ……
?
the motor wiring looks suspect to me v’s the wiring diagram?
?
at some point the 4core cable has been replaced and the coulors do not match which is a pain !
?
first wire issues are two of the motor wires were joined together not per drawing, Earth ok
?
so I would need a technique to I’d the wires at the motor end and replace the cable for the correct coulor code
?
next question : Is there a controller for the motor or just a simple switch ?
?
next question : Is there a manual for the mill only ? I have the standard manual with some details but not what I would consider a full manual / leads onto …..
?
how to adjust the spindle bearings if at all possible?
?
I think that covers the main points if any folk can help !
?
?
cheers R

Re: Maximat 7 mill head motor question

Hi guys i would like to ask any body who own milling machine for 220V EMCOMAT 7 could you send me please picture of capacitor and if you have motor data plate please ,or use this mill similar capacitor like use mill for maximat 10 ,thankyou guys for help ,my regards Roman

Hi Rick

I think Chris has answered you as to the most likely problem being the capacitor if the wiring is correct

Make sure you get a “motor run” capacitor i.e continuous duty

Inso far as the wiring is concened don’t get too fussed about the colours

The 240V motor has 3 windings all the same plus an earth

One winding is connected to Neutral

The second winding is connected to Line

The third winding is connected via a capacitor also to Line

This is reflected in the picture in the manual

Hope this makes sense

There is no separate manual for the mill that I have seen so if any member has one please scan it for us
?

The mill is controlled by the white button switch on the far right of the switch bank

Regards,

Carvel

Re: Maximat 7 mill head motor issues

Mill (if it's 4 speed model) should only have 4 wires and none should be shorted together. One must be hardwired to the motor body, so should be easy to find. Other 3 are equals in 3ph motors but are different in 1ph motors so it depends on what you have. Posting your motor nameplate picture is a good starting point.
Single phase mill is normally controlled by a somewhat complicated switch. Three phase one is a simple switch. You can use a VFD on a 3ph model, on a 1ph you cannot (you would need a pretty rare type of VFD).
There are plenty of manuals in the files section. Not sure there is one specifically for the FB-1 mill but you can scrape the info together from different sources for sure.
Spindle bearings on the mill are not adjustable. You can replace top ones, bottom one has inner race integrated with the spindle and would be PITA to service. Lathe spindle can be adjujsted, look for keyword "preload" in the old topics

Vedran
