1984 V10P - should I sell it?

?
--
Emco V10P new 1984 from my wife's uncle. I brought it to Florida from Dayton in 2006 and have used it to turn plastic, brass, aluminum and the odd steel part. It all works. I am moving and have to sell or move the lathe. I only have a basement for it to go in, and the steps down are in the middle of the house. Not ideal. I don't use it much anymore so maybe it's time for it to be re-homed.
?
I am in Fort Myers, FL. Anyone buying it would have to come get it. I rented a Penske truck in Dayton and three of us loaded it and I drove it to Fort Myers.?
?
Can anyone give me an idea what some recent sale prices have been? I have a lot of tooling and tool steel ready to grind. Four-jaw chuck. other goodies. The stand needs painted since it stood in storm surge from a hurricane. The lathe was inscathed, but I lost my backup control box guts!!??
?
I have a neighbor who will take it if I don't find? a buyer or decide to move it. Our movers charge by the pound, so not taking it would save some?
?
Anyone have price advice, or interested in more information please let me know.?
?
Carey

Re: Norton box Strip/Rebuild

You need to press the shaft out about 20mm as a unit more or less, and then take the gears off one by one. On my metric machine, the bearing on the right side (by the big gear) is a slip fit on the shaft, while the other one is a press fit. It's therefore best to push from right to left, and apply pressure on the shaft only (not the whole bearing). Left hand side bearing gets pushed out of the casting in the process, the right one stays in the casting. There's no way IMHO to do this in a bearing friendly way without a press, so best to replace (at least the left one) on reassembly if you tap the thing out with a hammer.

I've uploaded two relevant reassembly videos. They are not edited - sorry - but should give you an idea :)
Just don't go banging on the stuff as I did, I was young(er) and stupid when I did this... made me cringe when I watched it now :)

Norton box Strip/Rebuild

Hi All,
?
It's come around time to start working on the Blue V10 so I can get her ready to sell (I need the space) and I need to swap the innards of the Norton boxes.
?
If you remember a few years ago I got a V10P in very nice condition that was Imperial and while I was cleaning it up & repainting it I swapped it over to Metric using some of the parts from the Blue V10, I managed to pick up a Metric V10p norton box so that made things easier but now I need to put the V10 to Imperial (because I don't have the other parts in Metric) and without the aid of a spare Imperial V10 Norton box I need to strip the gears out of the Imperial V10p Norton and swap them with the Metric V10 Norton. (hopefully this will also yield a spare V10p Metric box at the end of this, any takers for a fair price?).
?
So far I have the V10 gearbox empty and the V10p just has the 7-gear spindle left in it but I just can't get it out.
?
I have both of the roll pins out of the shaft and there's a small amount of movement of the shaft when I tap it with a drift from either end but after about 2mm it just stops, I'm afraid if I belt it too hard I'll break the casting.
?
Any suggestions of anything I might have missed or is it just a case of pressure/impact and possibly heat to get it out?
?
Many Thanks
Tim

If I'm reading this correctly, it's medium hardness, brown Al oxide, open structured wheel, good up to 11000 RPM. Emco TP grinder goes up to 12000 RPM, but going by the manual, we're only supposed to use slow gear (4500 RPM) for OD grinding so it should be fine.

I don't really need them either, but sign me up for 3 pieces Roman

Hi Roman
Some more information would be useful, what kind of stones are they, Alummium Oxide ?
Considering that grinding wheels that fit the 16mm arbor of the Emco toolpost grinder
are discontinued, are these new manufactured or new old stock ?
I guess they're flat wheels ? Any cup wheels ?

At a price of 12 Euro (about 13 dollars), I would buy two whole sets. Who knows when such a buying opportunity will come again.

Re: TOOL POST GRINDER - NEW INFORMATION original grinding wheels for sale

Ok Vedran white corund 99BA is cheaper like 96A andis better have grinding wheel also for cast iron not only for steel ,no problem ,regards Roman

Also, going by the catalogue, 99BA is suitable for cast iron, while 96A is not... other specs seem the same. Maybe go with 99BA for that reason.

Today I called a technician at TYROLIT and asked him about the questions I received from you, so the wheels are set for a maximum grinder speed of 11700 rpm - test runs are carried out at 20000 rpm, unfortunately when I first asked about grinding wheels I did not know the exact maximum grinder speed, today I gave this information to the technician and he told me that there is no problem to use a different bond when the wheel can have a safe speed of up to 14700 rpm, the wheel will be a little more expensive (I do not have the price yet) but I think it will not be more than 1 eu,

I also had a question from you about what material they are made of - the white wheel is marked 99BA corundum zirconium and the brown ones are 96A corundum modified with titanium, the wheels will grind material to a hardness of 55 HRC,
There was also a question here whether they also make cup wheels - not in these sizes but I will get an offer from the catalog, for now I found out that they have a cup wheel with dimensions of 50x50x13mm.?

As soon as I get a new price offer due to increased speed I will inform you.

Unfortunately so far I only have an offer for 9 grinding wheels I will keep about 6 of them so a total of 15 there are still 35 left.
Furthermore, the production process was 8 weeks, I asked for a shorter production date, but unfortunately it is not possible due to the complexity and specification of the production of grinding wheels.

So that is all I have found out about your questions for now.

Re: TOOL POST GRINDER - NEW INFORMATION original grinding wheels for sale

Hi Vedran i only follow your lead and i found this information in user manual -lower speed for outer grinding and higher for internal grnding? i understand that 4500rpm are enough and still firs version is capable handle 8000rpm which is midle range of speed but for safety reason if somebody want to try advise of user manual 12000 rpm for internal frinding wheel will not explode in grinder guard ( probably for internal is the longer arbor / shaft/)?

Re: TOOL POST GRINDER - NEW original grinding wheels for sale

Hi Vedran for your advise , i did and rrushes are like new ,i thing problem with some burn wires happen because wires in glans was loose and you can easy pull them out and in and in that momentt cople time they hit rotor and was cut trough insulation inti life wire and short , tomorrow i let fix this problem ind i have hope motor winding is ok , regards Roman

Universal AC motors are not regulated so free spinning RPM is dependent on friction, etc. What is printed on the motor nameplate will usually be top RPM with no load and it will drop quite a bit under load.
Carbon brushes are consumable, so check them first when servicing this type of motor.

Hi Vedran thank you for this idea i was looked in to manual for v 10 and it is say only speed off pulley 4500 ,8000 ,12000RPM and low speed should be use for outernal grinding id higher for internal grinding ,nothing about motor RPM .But few weeks a go i have luck and i bought TP grinder but some wire which go into motorr are burn so i have to fix this problem , and on motor is not actually rpm? but is " n - 7000 it is torque ? in newtometer??
Before wires was burn grinder has whistle noise and after proper clean bearing i find out the back one dos not run smoothly so a replaced both two bearings and afcourse automaticly replace motors and it was much quit .I will see after i fix problem with wires .? ?,my regards Roman

Motor is brushed universal AC type so it¡¯s pretty fast and loud but I¡¯m not sure about the exact speed and I don¡¯t have access to a v10 manual at the moment. TP grinder deatails are in there, you can look them up. The spindle has three pullies that cover the range from 4500 to 12000 RPM.

Re: TOOL POST GRINDER - NEW original grinding wheels for sale

Universal AC motors are not regulated so free spinning RPM is dependent on friction, etc. What is printed on the motor nameplate will usually be top RPM with no load and it will drop quite a bit under load.
Carbon brushes are consumable, so check them first when servicing this type of motor.
