#admin Policies have consequences

It is unfortunate that
wn4isx
felt he had to leave over a group policy set years ago - possibly when YahooGroups abandoned E101. All 'my' Yahoo groups moved to 开云体育 as a result of Yahoo leaving the Free Groups out in the ether. Not the first time this happened to 'my' groups.? I think my first was started in 1989 as an text based email thing whose name I cannot recall. It may have lasted a year or so before being absorbed by another company and forcing 'group owners' to make some adjustments. Then, as I recall, they were absorbed by Yahoo - more changes, more learning curve. Frankly, I never 'mastered' YahooGroups management and discovered features after they announced I had to find another application that would allow me to carry 'my' groups into yet another decade. And, here, running a few on 开云体育, I find myself learning as I go and folks like wn4isx stumble about learning the intricacies of the various 'features' 开云体育 touts as improvements to such groups as 'ours' much as Windows keeps changing this, that or the other to justify charging for a new OS or App only to frustrate existing customers who were happily learning some (if not all) of the last tranche of 'features' they never asked, but had to pay for. In researching this issue of file and photo attachments policies I am not sure I discovered just where the policy referenced was set (could be 'unset'/disabled) but I did come across a page toting up the graphics and files stored in the archives along with a graph depicting the megabytes consumed in relation to those allowed on a 'free' group. As I do not share moderator or owner status for this group, I cannot attest to what that graph might indicate for 'us.' However, It may well prove significant in that the only way to increase the group's capacity for such storage is to pay for it!? And, if you thought managing a group was tough, try getting members to reimburse you for the cost of maintaining it. As to the rambling OFF TOPIC discussions over the Administration of this group, there is a better way to handle things. They involve #hashtags (some of which needed to be set when the group was created - but can be added now or later),?
About subgroups, and
About group chats. The last two should make it easier to effectively take these 'off topic' discussions off to the side and by and? between those members consumed by the need to resolve them within the constraints imposed on a FREE group.? The #admin Hashtag, as I understand it, allows such topics to be segregated and, thus more readily available as a reference going forward. I would suggest that those here with privileged status create the - suggested hashtags, and form and #admin subgroup
(sort of a 'board of directors)
and then commit to doing the research (big help files!), having the discussion, forming a decision, then advising the group as a whole of the contemplated decision and inviting any comments to the admin subgroup or group owner (as opposed to the group as a whole). In the interim, consider approving all 'on topic (e.g. E101)' posts regardless attachments and such until 'the board' feels it has completed sufficient research to competently adjust the settings of this group so as to keep it FREE as well as functioning as intended/hoped. I figured mine was good for stuff that didn't quite fit elsewhere. We had some good discussions going, and then that whole thing happened, and I didn't move fast enough to get things moved over. I did start a group but nothing's happening with it. I also started a mailing list on my hosting provider, but nobody's seen fit to join it so far and I haven't gone to the trouble of promoting it. I offered, but never heard back, and the original owner hasn't been seen since he left to deal with health issues. I cannot attest to what that graph might indicate for 'us.' I'll dig around and see if I can find the info regarding my mailing list, if anybody's interested. -- Member of the toughest, meanest, deadliest, most unrelenting -- and ablest -- form of life in this section of space, ?a critter that can be killed but can't be tamed. ?--Robert A.
