Devotional: Jesus Breaks Barriers—Come as You Are!

1 John 5:14
March 30, 2025
Today's Scripture

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

1 John 5:14

Jesus created quite a ruckus in the Temple after being hailed with a hero’s welcome when He arrived in Jerusalem. He drove out the money changers. He turned over their tables. He reprimanded them sharply. Afterwards, Matthew 21:14 tells us that the blind and the lame came to Him there in that holy place, and He healed them.

That seems fitting to us, the perfect place for Jesus to perform miracles. However, in Jerusalem, tradition dictated that the blind and lame – anyone who had a physical impairment – were not allowed to enter the Temple. Their imperfection denied them the right to be admitted to the very place where they could receive healing.

Jesus broke through the barriers, tore through the tradition to welcome the hurting. Can you imagine the crush of the crowd? Can you see their eager faces? Here, where they had only found rejection and resistance, Jesus reached out to heal blind eyes and lame limbs. Those who had never seen before received their sight. Those who had never walked went running and leaping and praising God. The Temple walls must have resounded with exuberant shouts. Tears of joy and gratitude must have wet their cheeks.

Throughout Scripture, we see Jesus reaching out in welcome: sharing a meal with tax collectors, pulling a child onto His lap, touching a leper, plucking Peter out of the sea, taking a dead girl’s hand, smearing mud on a blind man’s eyes. He welcomed their questions and their complications, their illnesses and infirmities.

He is still reaching, still welcoming. His arms are open. His eyes are smiling. No fear of rejection here. We can boldly approach the throne of grace with full confidence to obtain mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:16). We are surrounded by the spiritually blind, those who have overlooked the important and cannot see what is needful. We are surrounded by the spiritually lame, those who may see what they need but are too hindered to get to it. We can bring them to the throne, too – with full confidence of acceptance and love.?

Blessing

Jesus, thank You for breaking down the walls that stood between us. I am so grateful that Your arms are open, that Your hands are reaching, that Your heart is welcoming, that I am accepted in the Beloved. May I always extend that same welcome to others. In the name of Jesus…Amen.

Devotional: Non-Negotiables - Today with Pastor Allen Jackson

开云体育

Non-Negotiables

John 14:31 (NIV?)
“I love the Father and … I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.”

Most of us don’t like to be commanded. We’d rather be asked, invited, encouraged, or persuaded. But here is Jesus―water-walking, dead-raising, blind-eye-opening Jesus―describing His life purpose while obediently doing exactly what His Father had commanded Him. Are you willing to accept a commandment from the Lord, exactly, with no invitation to share your opinion and with no concern for your comfort or calendar? Or are you prone to negotiating? When we say, “God, I love You and will serve You, whether I get my way or not,” we will be astounded by the things He will do in us and through us.

THINK ABOUT IT
When we say yes to God, we become part of His work in the world. His incredible plan for us will unfold!

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I am humbled by Jesus’ example of loving, serving, and obeying You—even in His death on a cross. Help me be like Jesus and obey You, without question or reservation, even when Your plan isn’t clear. I praise You for the mighty things You will do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,
Pastor Allen Jackson

Devotional: Inviting God to Intervene

?

Inviting God to Intervene

Colossians 4:2 (NASB?)
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.

Being an advocate for the Kingdom of God does not require a theology degree or a platform with a microphone. You simply have to be able to say to someone, “Let’s pray!” and follow it with a one-sentence prayer and an amen. For example, if your neighbor shares their concern for a parent’s health, say, “Let’s pray.” Then bow your head and say, “Lord, please give my friend’s parent health and strength today. Amen.” This works in a company break room or boardroom. It works while sitting in bleachers or standing in a produce aisle. I can only imagine the spiritual breakthroughs we would witness if followers of Jesus became willing to intercede for their friends, neighbors, and coworkers in this way. People would begin to wonder why you care about their problems, and you would have an opportunity to tell them about the love of Jesus and what He means to you. People would change. Churches would change. Then, communities would change. Let’s do it! Let’s pray!

THINK ABOUT IT
Praying invites the Creator of Heaven and Earth into our lives and circumstances. When we pray with others, it displays our trust in God and that we believe He is willing to intervene and help them.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to be an advocate for Your Kingdom. Give me eyes to see the people around me who need Your help and healing—then help me to be diligent to pray with them and invite You into their circumstances. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,
Pastor Allen Jackson

IM Letter by: Weasie
Today's Scripture

...in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Here we are – miles away from Thanksgiving! Months away from turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. Many miles and months to go before the calendar turns, before the leaves turn, and before we turn to a table laden with scrumptious bounty and surrounded by those whom we love the most.

For the Christian believer, Thanksgiving is not just a holiday that we tick off our to-do lists the third week of November each year. Thanksgiving – gratitude – should be hardwired into our DNA, rooted in our hearts, and evident in our everyday lives.

In today’s verse, the apostle Paul instructs us to give thanks in every single thing. It’s easy to breeze over that verse with a confident, “Of course!” But are we giving thanks in everything? When we are satisfied and safe, happy and healthy, praises roll easily off our tongues. What about the other times though?

Paul practiced what he preached. The book of Acts tells us about a particularly tough time for this Christ-follower. In the town of Philippi, Paul and Silas were attacked, stripped, beaten with rods, thrown into jail, and restrained in stocks. That’s a bad day! Deep in the night, a sound reverberated through the prison cells as the other inmates listened. Was it crying, complaining, kvetching? No, it was the triumphant strains of praise, prayer, and the singing of hymns (Acts 16).

Paul had figured out how to be content. In poverty or prosperity. Whether famished or full, abased or abounding, thanksgiving flowed from his grateful heart. He recognized his Source in every situation and shared it with us: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Our thankfulness demonstrates to God that we trust Him more than the affairs of the world in which we live. In everything – not for everything – but in every condition, under every circumstance, through every situation, give thanks to God.

In the big moments, give thanks. In the small, seemingly insignificant moments, give thanks. On the good days when everything goes according to plan, give thanks. On the bad days when everything seems against you, give thanks.

When you consider your past, give thanks that God carried you through it. When you are overwhelmed in the crisis, give thanks that God will never abandon you to cope alone. When you consider all of your tomorrows, give thanks that God goes before you to smooth the path.

Blessing

Heavenly Father, I give You praise. In every situation, help me to focus on You and Your goodness toward me. May my heart always overflow with gratitude towards You. May Your praise continually be in my mouth. Wherever I find myself today, I know that You are present and powerful enough to take me through with praise. In the name of Jesus…Amen.

Listen & Obey

James 1:22 (NIV?)
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

When I think of the tragedies of World War II, I wonder what might have been different if the Church had responded differently. Many who thought of themselves as Christians actively participated in the Holocaust; many others remained silent as their Jewish friends and neighbors were driven out of their homes and sent to extermination camps. The Christians of our generation may not have participated in an ethnic cleansing like that, but we have turned a blind eye to a great deal of evil and injustice, such as the abortion of over 63 million babies since 1973 alone. God’s people really do matter in this world. When we stand up and tell the truth about what God says, evil is held at bay. When we capitulate to the culture, evil flourishes. James didn’t mince words when he wrote this passage: “Don’t just read your Bible, then close it and walk away,” he said. “Don’t just sit there and hear God’s Word taught and act like it doesn’t apply to you. If you really believe it, you need to act like it. You need to do what it says.”

THINK ABOUT IT
When Christians refuse to believe in biblical values, and when we’re not willing to stand up for them in our homes or the public square, we reject obedience to the authority of Scripture and our assignment to be salt and light.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, forgive me for when I have unresponsively read Your Word. From this day, I choose to honor You by not just reading Your Word but carefully listening to obey its counsel. I want to cooperate with You in such a way that You can trust me to be effective salt and light for Your purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,

The Wise Man

The wise man in the storm prays to God,

not for safety from danger,

but for deliverance from fear.
