Try Out - and ideas to enhance Earthdog 2
So this is my post to earthdogfanciers at the groups.io address. I went and found I was a member. There has been some discussion to make a new Intro Level Title - Novice Earthdog. Run at the IQ den, but with NO help from owner or judge. I personally would like two legs for an NE. Then there has been discussions on having Elite titles. This would be 10 Qs at a level so you could get a JE-Elite an SE Elite and ME Elite and then accumulate numbers if you wished. There are dogs not yet ready to go on from Junior to Senior, and many dogs and/or owners that are not confident or ready to do Masters where the dog must run with a bracemate, and work off lead in a field or woods. AKC Actually records how many legs a dog has at each level. So the results are easy to see. I do not think we should be charged a fee to get the Elite title. You can accumulate Elite Legs even if you did not make a QQ at an individual test. For EE you have to keep track and submit and pay a fee as both legs must be done at the same test Listening to the AKC Committee meeting for Field Trial and Hunt Tests they might also want to consider an Elite level for Hunt Tests. People get their Master Hunter and then stop, but another title might encourage them to go on. If you like these ideas, do let Maria Sacco know. Senior Earthdog Rule Change
From the October AKC BOD Minutes Senior Earthdog – Giving an Additional Command The Board reviewed a recommendation from the Delegate Herding, Earthdog and Coursing Events committee to allow the handler of a dog in the Senior Earthdog test to give one command should the dog exit the den prior to reaching the quarry. Giving the command is at the determination of the handler and does not require the instruction of the judge. Currently in the Senior level test, once a dog is released to enter the den, the handler may not give any commands. Regulations for Earthdog Tests for Small Terriers and Dachshunds Proposed Regulations (Line In) Chapter 4. Section 12. Senior Earthdog Test – Qualifying Performance. 2nd paragraph. Timing of the dog for the approach portion of the test shall start when the dog is released by the handler. The dog has 90 seconds from the time of release to reach the quarry, provided that it is continuously searching during that time. The dog may enter and leave the den, provided it has not reached the quarry. If the dog exits the den prior to reaching the quarry, the handler may, on his/her own determination (without being instructed by the judge), give the dog one command without penalty. To earn a qualifying score, the dog must make at least 30 feet of forward progress to reach the quarry. A dog which false marks by vigorously or loudly working in the false den area for more than 15 seconds may not pass. Following a motion by Ms. McAteer, seconded by Mr. Carota, the Board VOTED (in favor: Directors Biddle, Carota, Cruz, Davies, Feeney, Hamblin, McAteer, Powers, Smyth, Sweetwood, Tatro, Wallin; against: Garvin) to consider the matter at this meeting waiving its normal notice procedures. Following a motion by Dr. Davies, seconded by Mr. Powers, the Board VOTED (unanimously) to approve the proposed regulation change, effective January 1, 2020.
