“Wings Remembered” museum.
Hi all, Just to peak some interest - I put the link to a Tennessee Crossroads episode about the “Wings Remembered” aviation museum near Lebanon TN, that I mentioned at our 18 Feb meeting. I’ve contacted the owner, and it’s still open, possibly by appointment only. If I remember, there’s no fee to visit but Donations are accepted. The facility is housed in a Quonset Hut…alot of history in a small area. More details soon. SC Wings Remembered | Tennessee Crossroads | Episode 2624.2 youtu.be

EAA162 Monthly Meeting (gathering) Feb 19, 2024
Happy Super Bowl Sunday – I hope your team wins! Thanks to all who attended our meeting on January 22, 2024 at our new gathering location at Forge Flightworks at Smyrna airport KMQY. There was a unanimous vote to accept the offer of the CEO of Forge, Mark Lee to lease the meeting room, small office and associated entry area for a monthly fee of Zero dollars per month. In exchange we will help make cosmetic improvements such as paint, flooring, etc. and assist with adding a handrail and other improvements in the stairwell. Besides general discussion about the options and opportunities the new location offers, Mark gave us a tour of their two hangers and explained his vision for expansion in the future. John Black, Executive Director of Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport Authority, expressed his pleasure at having us relocate to Smyrna and offered to come visit us once we get settled in. Our next meeting (gathering) will be next Monday, February 19th, 2024, in the upstairs conference room in Hanger 624. The building numbers are on the right side of the hanger, so look for 625 and then look to the right. We will have our Chapter 162 banner on the building. David Wilson, the next newest aviation instructor from McGavock High Schools will be our guest. I am anxious to hear what improvement have been made at the school, the new programs he has started and his vision to help potential young aviators. We need to identify potential pilots for Young Eagles events. Besides the formal rallies we try to hold twice a year, I have had numerous requests for flight for small groups and individuals. I look forward to seeing you and guests at our next meeting. Please RSVP so that we can make sure to have enough chairs and food. Stay safe and have fun! EAA 162 Jan 2024 news
Happy New Year! As you are probably aware our chapter has been somewhat stagnant for the past several years due to the tornado at KJWN, Covid and several other issues. One of those is the lack of event space “outside the fence” at John Tune. Mark Lee, CEO of Forge Flightworks, at Smyrna Airport (KMQY) has offered us a “club house.” It is a 19’ x 19’ upstairs meeting room inside Hanger 624, overlooking multiple airplanes that they are upgrading. While Forge occasionally uses the room, Mark is proposing to give us exclusive access to an adjoining 9’ x 11’ office that we can use to securely store our property as well as set up a library with the 100+ aviation books that have been donated to the chapter. Mark drives a hard bargain, requesting that we agree to a lease that calls for Zero Dollars ($0.00) per month. In addition to the rooms, the facility has outside space that we can use for chapter events. KMQY is General Aviation friendly with quite a few GA aircraft onsite. Besides proposing to move our meeting location, I am also proposing to change the meeting days. Several members mentioned that the third Thursday of each month made it impossible to participate. Based on those who responded to my survey, Monday is the only day without objection. I am proposing that we move our meeting days to the Third Monday of each month. You are invited to join us Monday, Jan 22nd, 6:30pm for light dinner, 7:00-7:30pm meeting, at hanger 624, KMQY, across the driveway from Forge Flight Works office at 624-B Fitzhugh Blvd, Smyrna, TN 37167. We will have signs & orange cones to direct you to the upstairs room. Yep, I know that it’s the fourth Monday but we needed time to work out details. Mark Lee will be present to explain his vision for mutual benefit for EAA162 and Forge Flightworks, to answer any questions and to give us a tour of the hangers and the various aircraft that they are upgrading. We can discuss opportunities to host various activities at the new site. Time permitting, we will also have a VMC scenario. It would be appropriate for the chapter members to vote whether to accept these changes. If you cannot attend, you are welcome to send me an email with your thoughts. night view 2
The International Space Station will be visible flying overhead tonight and tomorrow night. Thu Nov 16… tonight, on your way to the meeting!... look to the west-southwest sky at 6:09 PM. ISS will track across the sky for 4 minutes from WSW to N reaching a maximum 54° above the horizon. Fri Nov 17, look to the southwest sky at 5:21 PM. ISS will track across the sky for 6 minutes from SW to NE reaching a maximum 80° above the horizon. The ISS will shine bright and may “flicker” due to reflections/refractions of the sunlight off its solar panels. It will move across the sky slower than a jet, but still noticeably moving. The ISS has been in operation for 24 years and 200 days (as of today), and is planned to be de-orbited in the coming decade. If the skies are clear, go get a peak of this amazing feat of modern engineering. SpaceX is ready to attempt its second test flight of Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket in human history. Assuming they get FAA clearance for the launch, they have targeted a 2 hour window tomorrow morning from 0700-0900 (central) for lift-off. As much as I would absolutely love to bus everyone down to Boca Chica, TX to see this launch, it’s only possible for us to watch it from the internet. If the launch is successful (remember this is a TEST flight), the booster (a.k.a. “Super Heavy”) will go through its autonomous landing procedures to make a “soft landing” in the Gulf of Mexico, and Starship will go around the earth to make its own “soft landing” in the Pacific Ocean off of Hawaii. Click here for the SpaceX website, see the test flight profile, and to view the Starship launch. Roy A. Miles III, CR., CGR., CAPS., CGP. The Miles Company, GC#22551 (615) 347-0112 cell
