right click PSUD2 OSX

Hello John,

The damnedest thing ~ I tried it again and EUREKA ~ PSUD2 does indeed insert filters on a MacBook. I had no idea of the existence of that pop-up.

My MacBook was bought 'refurbished' and I have some issues with it (e.g. Maps are blank every other day) so perhaps it's a case of a worker blaming her tools...

I've only been using Macs since the early 1990s (and amateur programming, in Fortran and Basic, long before that ~ never something called machine code or ugghh MS DOS though ~ so I was certainly not up to speed with two-fingered tapping and I believe I'm correct in asserting that there is nothing in the (IMHO rather sparse) PSUD2 'documentation' about having to do the two-fingered shuffle to insert filters - on any operating system.)

For that previously missing piece of information I have to thank you very much. I can now play the theoretical game 'do not blow up the rectifier' to my heart's content.

However, this has thrown up another nasty for this naive Mac user... .PSU files ~ I can save them but cannot view them.? Acrobat Reader immediately throws in the towel (corrupt attachment / not supported type blah;) whilst I could use screenshot to save them it's yet another mystery.

Finally, when I do the calculations for the HEXFREDs I propose to use, I might be in position to start building an amplifier.? I've only been collecting expensive parts for a decade or more.

Once again, John, please allow me to say that your advice has been priceless.

Siobhan

Okay, weird.
I, too, have a MacBook Pro, and use PSUD. This same issue drove me crazy but doing the setup of the track pad, as per the link, it is no longer an issue. To double check, I just tried it - two fingers, tap, and I get the insert/delete window.
I don't know what else to say.

Thank you but right clicking on a mac trackpad is not the issue ~ the issue i have with PSUD2 /73 is that no amount of jiggery pokery enables more than one filter and therefore no means to evaluate a "real world" situation. I have asked about this before...
Thanks again.

Hi Siobhan,

You can't read .psu files with Adobe Acrobat Reader I'm afraid. The only way to "see" them is to start up PSUD and open them from there.

i am an absolute beginner on mac, having exlusively used them only since 1992. so please have some patience…

i admit using a logitech MX 3 for Mac mouse which does offer a very comfortable hardwired right click. for people with less-than-average ambidexteriosity, trying to avoid having to place their only two fingers on the pad, the alternative would be to use one to press the CONTROL key and the other to double click on the part of the schematic you intend to change, insert or delete.

as for the .psu files: that’s PSUD’s nativeand proprietary file format. it does not open with any other app (AFAIK); you save a project as .psu if you want to modify the content. to keep the circuit or the chart as souvenir, PDF is indeed a good solution. but you don’t need to take the scenic route via Acrobat Reader or so. Just select PRINT in the FILE menu (a pity btw that the usual key combination?? + P?(COMMAND + P) does not work because you need to select between printing the schematic or the chart) and then instead of printing, hit the PDF button in the lower left. it opens a pull-down menu with various options. you can either select SAVE AS PDF, which will leave you with a PDF showing a small circuit and lots of white. instead use OPEN IN PREVIEW ?> TOOLS > RECTANGULAR SELECTION. frame your masterpiece and then CROP (using a german localization, i’m not sure if selection and crop are the actual terms in english language menus). if you have a vector based design software such as e.g. Illustrator installed, you can then open this .ps file and manipulate ad lib. (PSUD does not allow to slide the divider ?between circuit and results/graph vertically, you can’t enlarge the circuit.)

hth, christian

Hi Christian,

This was always one of the big problems. PSUD3 will have separate tabs for the schematics and the charts to avoid things being too busy. It also has vector rather than bitmap graphics so can be scaled to look good on a piece of paper. (I say this, I haven't even started on the printing function yet).

The Command/Alt/Ctrl P to print will be context specific, so if you are in the schematic it will print a schematic. If you are in one of the four chart spaces it will print that chart so hopefully will make a bit more sense.

Regards,
Duncan

duncan,

that is great news - and way more than i would ever have dared to ask! (i’ve been using PSUD for an eternity, around or more than 20 years. since i didn’t want to buy a windows PC ?only for that great piece of software, and since i also didn’t want to use bootcamp with a windows partition or parallels on mac, i went for CrossOver (allows to run windows apps in ?bottles? directly in MacOs. i don’t know if one calls this an emulator or … – but it allowed me to run PSUD (and some of broskie’s simulators) without big issues. finding out how to navigate / operate PSUD for windows on a mac in OSX took a while, but eventually i found out all the subtleties and even motivated Stephie Bench to provide some models of FREDs for PSUD.)

it was a great day when PSUD became available for MacOS – even though for me, things didn’t change that much because that Win bottle didn’t slow down the sim (or the mac). sometimes i wished for more flexibility in the circuits (e.g. running chokes according to the lundahl suggestion i.e. putting one coil in the B+ path and the other in the ground. or using common mode chokes in LCLC topologies. or ening a supply not with C, but with an inductance (e.g. LCLCL for a fixed bias supply i.e. making the supply high impedance instead of low. i found that this has sonic benefits with fixed bias and low ? triodes especially at the onset of grid current, but i couldn’t sim it on PSUD.)

vector instead of bitmap graphics will use less memory and make PSUD3 faster and more flexible. very good news! separating circuit, math, and curves is the first step towards a mobile app… ? tabs instead of fixed windows is a big improvement, same as separating circuit, graph and tables. tables would be great if exportable to xls and recreate new graphics in excel or similar.

so thanks for the good news, for your feedback, and a great app!

Hi Christian, this feature will be available (or export to .CSV at any rate, these can load straight into Excel).
