Options for starting direwolf

Joe has this cable connected to the serial port so that he can assert PTT in Echolink Sysop mode using the RTS signal. He absolutely needs it for PTT in his configuration.

Hello Joe,

The d710 is connected using the Kenwood cable PG5G)

That is the RS232 cable that is either connected to the radio head to use the built-in TNC or connected to the radio body to program memories, do CAT control, etc.? For this application, you don't strictly need this cable

The usb sound card is connected to the pi and the DATA mini din to the radio.?

Right.. this is what what you want and you want to use the other "audio cable" that comes with the Kenwood PG-5H cable kit.

I am running the D710 in sysop mode

This is not strictly needed.? Have you tried running the D710 radio out of sysop mode?? I say this because the default D710/v71 audio levels not in Echolink mode should be perfect for packet.

?The other end of the Kenwood cable has a 9 pin DB9 connector connecting to the radio via mini-din

That is again only for RS232 programming / CAT control and secondary PTT.? The 6pin DATA port (aka audio data + PTT) is specifically what you want to use for packet.

I only use the radio for direwolf so I have it on Band A and I don't use Band B.??

Ok.. your choice though I personally reserve BAND-A (left VFO) for any internal TNC usage and use BAND-B (right VFO) for external TNC / Echolink, etc usage.

The "single digits" I refer to is the direwolf log showing the signal strength reportr4d by stations.? I should also add that direwolf always complains that the audio input level is too low and I should increase it so stations can hear me.? ?Before , I decided to ignore it but now I have reviewed the issue since I want to change the sound device to the digirig hoping that the sound device there would be better.? If so then I would have to figure out how to connect the ptt to the 710.? One thing at a time.

Ok.. DIrewolf is amazingly sensitive so I bet it can dig out many signals and decode them but you should try to increase that audio level in a "clean way".? You generally never want to have any sliders be it for input or output to be at 100% as that usually brings in some sorts of distortion, noise / hiss, etc.

I have just found that I can buy the cables from amazon for $62.??

Is this the right cable?? ? If I could use? the PG5G instead, it would save me the bucks but maybe I should just do it.

What sound device are you trying to use?? A Digirig, a Digirig LIte, or something else?

PTT is also on the 6pin DATA jack as well and I'd recommend that the packet PTT signal should be asserted on that connector.

Yes, but PTT _isn't_ on the other end of the PG-5H audio cable, so there's no supported (by Kenwood) way to get to that pin. I suspect that is why Kenwood made the cable set and the corresponding directions for use in their manual to require using CAT through a serial port.

Most PCs don't have a PTT connector (though they do have audio and serial connectors). That's why SignaLink and DigiRig exist.

Right.? To me, the ideal setup would be a digirig cable ONLY going to the 6pin DIN DATA port:

??

What I don't know here is with the Digirig device, is that PTT asserted via the CM108 GPIO pin (Direwolf supports this or via the optional Digirig RS232 serial port (available on the full digirig version.. not Digirig lite)

I just realized that this specific URL is wired for 9600bps only which is NOT what you want for APRS.? The cable I'm thinking of is:

??

though you only need the 6pin DATA one.? The other one is not technically needed for packet.

Allow me to clarify then.? Right now I have the digirig mobile.? It has an audio jack and a serial jack for PTT.? The one I need is ? ?
?
Once I buy that digirig cable I will be good to go.? I hope that the audio from this would be better than from my usb audio device.? Also it gives me a one cable solution which I really like.
?
Can you see anything that I may have missed or misunderstood?

Hi Joe,?

Those cables will work for your digirig mobile, but you will not use the green one. The black cable in the AUDIO port is the one you will use. The Digirig will PTT your radio via the RTS on the audio side. The Green cable is mostly used for CAT and programming the radio.

I have this set and this is what I use with my Kenwood radios. ?

Joe,

Isn't your PTT working now with the Kenwood cable and serial port RTS? Why are you entertaining a DigiRig at all? It isn't needed.

Perhaps somebody using the DATA jack PTT signal can explain if that keys only the selected DATA band or if? whichever side is active will be keyed.

Danny, yes it is but the level is so low with my alsamixer levels at max.? It was suggested that the audio device might be the culprit and I happen to have a digirig that I had previously bought.? One thing led to another and it seemed a good idea to try that.? I am hoping that the transmit levels will be higher with the new audio device.? of course this meant changing the ptt as well.
?
By the way, I am still using the Band A rather than Band B.? When I tried Band B, the radio would not transmit.? I don't use the radio for other things so I figured it would not matter.
?
I will be receiving the connection cable at the end of the week and I'll see if it was worth it.? HI Hi

If you find that the levels are too low regardless of which soundcard you use, I think David sent a link to a page that detailed how to adjust the levels in the radio for Echolink with the Windows control program.

This part...
There are *three* settings... can ONLY be configured via the free Kenwood MCP-2A Windows program:

                       - Echolink RX monitor
                       - Echolink RX audio level
                       - Echolink TX audio level

These settings CANNOT be set via any menu item on the radio
itself nor or a Linux program that I'm aware of. It's also
worth noting that these Echolink settings only activated when
you restart the radio into Echolink mode.

Joe,

Once you have a cable that can assert PTT on the 6pin DIN cable, be sure to also take the radio out of Echolink aka "Sysop" mode.

I am using the black cable into the audio port as you have and this is working because my receive works fine.? What do you use in the config file for PTT??
