Direwolf in Windows, TM-V71A, can't PTT using PTT COM6 RTS

Hello folks,
I'm running Direwolf in Windows 11.
Using a Digirig Mobile, connecting both of the two (black and green) Digirig cables for my Kenwood TM-V71A.
I edited the direwolf config file to add the line "PTT COM6 RTS"
Direwolf reports "Note: PTT not configured for channel 0, (Ignore this if using VOX.)
Tried the TM-V71A in EchoLink Sysop mode and not in that mode. No difference.
I don't see the power scale light up in the radios display indicating transmission.?
Paracon times out.
?
I soldered the 3 pad pairs inside the Digirig to enable RS-232.
Tested everything with a multimeter.
I do notice the Digirig case runs warm.
Is that because RS-232 uses 12v while?logic levels uses 3.3v?
?
I've been googling all day and don't know what is wrong.
?
Would someone please help me out.

The DigiRig Mobile is a "sound card" device to be used Direwolf as a TNC.? I assume you V71A doesn't have the D-710 TNC head.
The DigiRig RS-232 input is fro CAT control (frequency setting, etc.) of a radio.
The TM-V71A does not have CAT control.
?? Audio + PTT are always available independently from serial CAT
? ?and they work for minimum required digital modes?configuration with any radio
?
The DigiRig to V71A should be done with a TRRS to 6-pin miniDIN from the audio (black) connector.
?? This connection includes a PTT circuit using whatever Serial Port is configured, but not through the Green (serial) connector.
?? The Green (serial) connector is not used.
?
Although this appears to use the 9600 baud receive pin, it is advertised for use with this type of radio:
? ?
? ?When using with Digirig Mobile plug 3.5mm TRRS jack into black socket labeled “audio”.

Hello Dave,

I'm running Direwolf in Windows 11.
Using a Digirig Mobile, connecting both of the two (black and green) Digirig cables for my Kenwood TM-V71A.

Ok.? Before we get into it, can you tell us what you're wanting to do with Direwolf+Digirig?? 1200bps APRS or classic packet?? Maybe you're looking to do 9600bps classic packet??
Also, which cable set did you order from DIgirig?? I ask because they sell TWO different kits where one of them is for 9600 support which most people will NOT want.

I edited the direwolf config file to add the line "PTT COM6 RTS"

If the Digirig's USB side is connected to the Windows 11 machine and you then go into WIndow's Device Manager and look under "Ports (COM & LPT)", which port is the Digirig showing up?? Not sure?? Unplug the Digirig from the USB port and then re-connect it.? It should become obvious.

Direwolf reports "Note: PTT not configured for channel 0, (Ignore this if using VOX.)

This most likely means you added the PTT line in the wrong place.? Please send us your direwolf.conf file and we can look to see if anything stands out.

Tried the TM-V71A in EchoLink Sysop mode and not in that mode. No difference.
I don't see the power scale light up in the radios display indicating transmission.

You don't want echolink mode.?

I soldered the 3 pad pairs inside the Digirig to enable RS-232.
Tested everything with a multimeter.

This starts to get a little complicated and the details matter:

?? - What PCB version of the Digirig do you have?? You really need version 1.6 or newer
?? - Which specific contacts did you solder together?

I wish the solder pads were numbered so that things are very clear but they are.

I do notice the Digirig case runs warm.
Is that because RS-232 uses 12v while?logic levels uses 3.3v?

Hmmm.. "warm" is a very relative term but I don't know why it would run warm at all as these devices aren't doing all that much.

Thanks David,
?
I want to do 1200bps Classic Packet for now.
?
Amazon “Digirig 24" Coiled Cables for Kenwood TM-V71, TM-D710”
“one 1200 baud audio cable (MiniDin6) and one RS-232 serial CAT cable (MiniDin8)”
Black and Green TSSR plugs. ?

I checked, Serial pins 1 an 2 are shorted for loopback.
?
Device Manager shows: ? Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM6)
?
Bought Digirig Mobile from Amazon. The pcb says Rev. 1.11
?
Soldered pads as shown here:
?
?
Checked ok with multimeter.

Amazon “Digirig 24" Coiled Cables for Kenwood TM-V71, TM-D710”
“one 1200 baud audio cable (MiniDin6) and one RS-232 serial CAT cable (MiniDin8)”
Black and Green TSSR plugs.?

Ok.. sounds like you've ordered the correct setup for 1200bps classic packet

I checked, Serial pins 1 an 2 are shorted for loopback.

This isn't clear to me.? Did you make any changes (make solder bridges or cut traces) to the Digirig or are the current connections the same connections as shown green and blue here?

Device Manager shows: ? Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM6)

Ok.

Bought Digirig Mobile from Amazon. The pcb says Rev. 1.11

Ok

Regarding your direwolf.conf file

? 1. You haven't defined a "ADEVICE" aka "ADEIVCE0" aka the first sound card that Direwolf would use.? Please read the Direwolf User Guide on how to identify and specify your Digirig sound device.? When you first start direwolf from the Windows command prompt, it will show you which sound devices are present.? You'll want to set one of those as your ADEVICE (aka Audio Device 0) line in the direwolf.conf file

? 2.? Since the setting of the Digirig's solder bridges / trace cuts aren't clear, I will simply state that you don't need to use the serial port for PTT.? Instead, under the "channel 0" section, the PTT setting probably shouldn't use COM6 but instead use "PTT CM108".? This is assuming you only have one CrystalMedia CM108 sound device on your Windows 11 machines

? 3. Were are you getting the settings from the bottom?? For VHF packet
???? - I wouldn't recommend to use FX25
???? - Don't set the persist, slottime, retry, frack and dwait settings unless you know exactly what you're doing - let Direwolf use it's defaults
???? - your TXDELAY and TXTAIL values are most likely too large.? Start with say 20 and 5 for a Kenwood v71a and once things are working, you can probably decrease them even more for better performance (requires testing)

David, ? ?Serial pins 1 an 2 are shorted for loopback. ?I found a message by ?Dennis K0TX (owner of Digirig) stating that the early examples of his TM-V71A serial cable were wired incorrectly. ?He fixed that and to be sure you have the newer cable, check that Serial pins 1 and two are shorted together. Mine are.
?
I also found a message by Dennis K0TX that with a TM-V71A, Digirig Mobile must be set for RS-232, by bridging the 3 left pad pairs found in the pix I referenced.
I soldered these and checked every thing with a multimeter. ?So now mine is RS-232 not the factory default CMOS Duplex serial CAT with logic levels.
?
In my config file I have a line: "ADEVICE 0 0"?
That line and the settings from the bottom came from YouTube, The Modern Ham, ?? for the video.
? for the webpage.
?
I have tried "PTT CM108" to no avail.
?
Now I do have a Digirig Lite that I got for my FT-70D and it works, using "ADEVICE 0 0" , "ADEVICE 0 0" ?, and the settings on the bottom.
It also works on my TM-V71A.
?
I thought the Digirig Mobile would come in handy for using the TM-V71A with some programs that require CAT control. That's why I bought it.
But as I've explained I can't get the radio to transmit.
?
Thanks for your continued help.

Hello Dave,

Thomas Leibold (KK6FPP) reached out privately stating my previous answer was wrong and looking deeper on my last email, he's right.? Let me explain:
I think my confusion is around the Digirig *Lite* version of hardware natively supports CM108 PTT where as vs. Digirig *Mobile* version DOESN"T natively support PTT via CM108.? If you see (upper right, pin 13) there is the CM108 PTT line where I thought they had exposed this as a viable solder pad for the PTT function in later versions but I guess they haven't.? That said, there is a simple MOD to enable PTT the CM108 way instead of the serial port way:

??

So.. doing that mod is up to you if you care.

I have no idea why the default would be to short the RX / TX pins to be a loopback.? Pretty useless if you as me.

Ok.. right.. sounds like for the Digirig *Mobile* with using standard available solder pads, this is the way to go.

?

That line and the settings from the bottom came from YouTube, The Modern Ham, ?? for the video.

The "0 0" setting means "input sound device ID & output sound device ID.? The values for your setup will depend on your specific computer and you need to verify and put in the correct IDs for your setup.? When you run direwolf by itself on Windows, it will show all found IDs.

?I have tried "PTT CM108" to no avail.

This is NOT correct for the *Mobile* version and thanks again to Thomas for keeping me honest.

Now I do have a Digirig Lite that I got for my FT-70D and it works, using "ADEVICE 0 0" , "ADEVICE 0 0" ?, and the settings on the bottom.

Right.. the two versions are more different than I personally think they should but I didn't design it.? :-)

I thought the Digirig Mobile would come in handy for using the TM-V71A with some programs that require CAT control. That's why I bought it.
But as I've explained I can't get the radio to transmit.

Getting PTT to function with the Digirig *Mobile* is possible and a few options come to mind:

?? - Configure Direwolf to use CAT control
????? - To be clear, the Kenwood D710 / v71A *does* support CAT control though Kenwood doesn't advertise it.? Here is one write up on it that includes more good details:

????? - Depending on which Direwolf for Windows binary you have downloaded, CAT support might *not* be present.? Search the Direwolf.groups.io list archives to find some private builds people posted to try it

????? - Do note, to use CAT control on the D710/v71A, your radio *cannot* be in Echolink mode

?? - Per the lower left box at , it should work without modification.? If it doesn't, try running Direwolf using "PTT COM6 RTS" with using the calibration command line option to always assert PTT and then follow the schematic and see if the RTS pin of the chip and then the dual transistor buffer is actually sending the signal.? trace it all the way out to the pin#3 on the 6pin DATA cable

?? - Mod the digirig Mobile to use the CM108 GPIO3 signal as mentioned above to keep the Digirig Mobile's serial port alone

Thank you David,
?
I'm afraid this is all beyond me. ?I'll just use my Digirig Lite for packet and revisit Digirig Mobile when I get into other applications.
?
I really appreciate all your kind efforts.
