It is a beginners intro class to the traditional ballroom dances. I know most of your recipients are likely too advanced of dancers to be interested but this should be appealing to anyone they know that might like to take up ballroom dancing. I have asked Mona Brandt to teach the classes. All the relevant information is in the flyer. The class is open to everyone, not just Sun Lakes residents. No dance shoes required as well if they do not have a pair. We will provide dance ribbons for their shoes (no flip flops). Thanks so much! Sincerely, John Yu 480-699-7334

Correction and New News
Good news for our out-of-Leisure World-guests, our Security Department has agreed to leave the exit gate out to Southern Avenue open until 10:00 so our guests don’t have to leave before the dance ends to get out that gate. We’re ever so grateful And last message I said our January dance was on the 23rd of January, 2025. Should be Saturday the 25th of January. All Saturdays next season. ALSO, in response to inquiries I’ve had from new folks, the Rec 2 doors open at 5:00 p.m on dance night and the band starts playing at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served about 6:30. The band plays until 9:30 p.m. For GPS users or Uber, I understand the exact address of Rec 2 is 1548 Leisure World. ACJS Jazz Party, March 17
We had a good turnout for Mardi Gras and we hope to see many of you back on St. Patrick's Day. YOURCHESTRA PLAYS FOR ACJS on MARCH 17 Although new to us, Yourchestra formed as a group in 2006. Their leader, Richard Bogen, is a member of the Arizona Classic Jazz Society and has often played in the jam sets on either banjo, guitar or drums. He is also a music therapist and teacher. The band's repertoire is quite extensive and includes Early Jazz, Ragtime, 1920's, Tin Pan Alley, Jug Band, and New Orleans-style. They are able to explore the overlapping connections between ragtime, blues, country, folk, and jazz during the 1920's and 1930's. They have recently added a violin player to their ensemble. Cheryl Thurston will be playing piano with them on March 17. This event takes place on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Although we can't offer you green beer, the hot music will make up for that. The fun takes place 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., San Tan Ballroom, Crowne Plaza Phoenix-Chandler Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler. Theater and table seating are available. You can sit while listening to great music or take advantage of the two dance floors. Cost is $15. Pay at the door. Food and drink will be available for purchase in the hotel's bar (maybe even green beer). For more information, contact Helen Daley at 480-620-3941 or www.azclassicjazz.org

March Moonlight Dance
From: Moonlight Serenade <moonlightserenadelw@...> Final call for reserving your seat at the March 16, Moonlight Serenade last dance of the season. Thank you to all who have responded to my previous requests for reservation information. If you HAVE gotten a return response from me, you know I’ve received your reservation. If you’ve NOT gotten a response from me, I didn’t hear from you. We seem to be having trouble getting emails through. If you have not responded with whether or not you are coming, please do so quickly. The entrée choices this time are Chicken Piccata or Pork Osso Bucco. Please choose one. As you were advised at our last dance, our membership dues next year are $305. That adds $3.75 to each of the 4 dances; hardly enough to cover our costs, but we are trying to keep the costs down. Guest tickets will be raised to $100/couple. It would be great if you could bring next year’s dues to this last dance so we can start to work on next year’s budget through the long hot summer. Any leg up we get helps us prepare for the season. And again, thank you so much for the great support you’ve given this year and the enthusiasm you’ve all shown. We’re looking forward to another successful season in 24/25. -- Moonlight Serenade Joy Kosterman, Membership Chair (360) 903-4930 1357 Leisure World, Mesa 85206 MoonlightserenadeLW@...

March 16 Dinner Dance (Moonlight Serenade) East side of Mesa
This is an early reminder about our next Moonlight evening on March 16. Mark your calendars and invite guests early to secure seating as you prefer. Lovely way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. (Well, it’s close). We’ve had nothing but positive feedback on February’s dance, and we expect the Swing Memories Band to also give us a delightful evening in March. Our theme will be NaniKaPo, which means “A Beautiful Night”. Dinner entrée choices will be Pork Osso Bucco or Chicken Piccata. Tiramisu for dessert. Please think about this and let me know. REMEMBER we have to let the caterer know 7 days in advance how much meat to order. Late responders may wind up with a chair and no food--- Just an early alert so you can get your calendars marked and make your plans. And thank you so much for your continued support and good natures… -- Moonlight Serenade Joy Kosterman, Membership Chair (360) 903-4930 1357 Leisure World, Mesa 85206 MoonlightserenadeLW@...

ACJS Mardi Gras, February 11
Sent from my T-Mobile Device Get I've already been chastised for having a jazz event opposite the Super Bowl. Hey, I booked this first. Kickoff for the Super Bowl is 4:30 p.m. so you might only miss a few minutes of it - or you can DVR the game and not miss any of it. Cheryl has booked a group of great musicians: Richard Bogen/banjo, Evan Dain/bass, Dan Reed/trumpet, Maureen Roen/drums (sister of Sheila Early), Richard Smith/Clarinet, Greg Varlotta/trombone, and Cheryl on piano. One of the most exciting things about Mardi Gras as celebrated in New Orleans is the parades. The second is hearing what is referred to as Traditional New Orleans-style jazz. The first is much easier to find than the second. Mardi Gras Day, or Fat Tuesday, is February 13. The majority of parades take place during the 12 days before Mardi Gras but there are a few beginning on the official start date of the Carnival season, January 6. They total 79 in all this year. Many parades feature elaborate floats, the cost of which is paid by the sponsoring Krewe. A Krewe is a social club that may also hold masked costume balls and support charities. Each Krewe chooses the theme for their float and then contracts with a company to design and build it. The themes range from satire aimed at current local government officials to racy, musical, educational, fairy tales, etc. Krewe members purchase their own beads and other items to throw from the floats. Blaine Kern, known as Mr. Mardi Gras, started designing and building floats in 1947 and passed away in 2020. Blaine Kern Studios now provides floats for theme parks and parades around the world and are responsible for about 80 per cent of the New Orleans floats. The following year’s Mardi Gras designs start right after the current year’s parades are over. Artists draw preliminary sketches and the drawings are completed in color. Then carpenters and other craftsmen take over. Many previous designs are modified for reuse. New figurines are now made with styrofoam rather than the plaster of paris of years gone by. During a visit to Mardi Gras World, we learned things like nobody can leave the floats once the parade has started so each one contains a porta potty. There are ropes with hooks attached along the inside of the floats and Krewe members hook themselves on to make sure they don’t fall out while throwing beads to the crowds. Many Carnival attendees wear the Mardi Gras colors of green (faith), gold (power) and purple (justice). The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will not have a float but will present the music started in New Orleans a century ago. There will also be many opportunities to march with an umbrella on Sunday, February 11, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., San Tan Ballroom, Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler. The music will be great Traditional jazz provided by Cheryl's Mardi Gras Jazz Band. Bring your own umbrella or use one of the many decorating the jazz party. Beads will be provided. We also have dance floors which many New Orleans jazz clubs don’t offer. Cost is $20 per person. Food and drink will be available for purchase in the hotel's bar. For more information, contact Helen Daley at 480-620-3941 or www.azclassicjazz.org
