This is a reminder that 2023-24 dance season for Merrymakers dances begins tomorrow, Thursday Nov 2nd. Dances are at Las Palmas Grand ballroom, 2550 S. Ellsworth Rd. Mesa, AZ (7/10 mi South of US 60) Doors open 6:00 p.m. Live Music: 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Membership for the season is $10 and open to everyone. Dance admission is $10 for members, $12 for non-members The dance season is every Thursday night (except Thanksgiving) through the month of April. November 11, is rapidly approaching; it’s time to get out your fine attire and dust off your dance shoes and make meal selections for our first Moonlight Serenade dance of this season. Good dance music has been hard to find this summer, so I know we are all eager to dance to the Danny Kealey band. The theme for this dance is Shades of Autumn, in keeping with our early fall dance. Entré selections will be: Pork Tenderloin or Chicken Marsala accompanied by mashed potatoes and broccoli and Caesar salad. Apple crisp dessert Please make your meal selections and any seating arrangements you prefer and let me know. Also, due to unforeseen price increases by Leisure World, this season we are asking that you bring your own sodas. We know that traditionally you have only brought your own wine and alcohol, but when LW raised costs and soda went to $1.50/can, we felt maybe our members would be amenable to bringing their own mixer as well. But water will still be freely available! Your continued support is always appreciated. And as it becomes more difficult to find good, danceable music, we hope to keep providing it. This service is offered to the dance community in support of the idea that amateur dancers may be in the market for gently used dresses, suits, practice wear, shoes, jewelry, etc. We will have a designated area, just like the other vendors, and someone will be there with the items all day. If you're interested in offering items for sale, see the details below and the attached agreement. If not, stop by and see what's for sale! This year we aren’t going to put a limit on the number of items, but we may have to rotate items if the racks get too full. Brief description: Size: Price: At the bottom of the attached form, indicate what payment arrangements you’re able to accept in addition to cash, such as - Zelle or Venmo (strongly encouraged, since people don’t always carry cash anymore) Personal Checks - Up to what amount. I will get a phone and e-mail for any checks. Credit Cards - If you have a Square or similar account, I will contact you if someone is interested in one of your items, so that you can work out the arrangements. Your name, phone, e-mail address, and how you prefer to be contacted during competition, in case someone has questions. Note - On some of the more expensive items, we may just give people a chance to see the item and try it on, and then connect the two of you to work out payment details. If you're coming to the competition, bring the items with you that day. Hanging items need to come on hangers. Otherwise, contact me and we will make arrangements to meet beforehand. PAOLO ALDERIGHI AND STEPHANIE TRICK Stephanie Trick (St. Louis), a leading exponent of stride piano, and Paolo Alderighi (Milan), one of Italy’s foremost jazz pianists, met at a piano festival in Switzerland in 2008. Both have a background in classical piano. Stephanie graduated from the University of Chicago with a BA in music, and Paolo has a piano performance degree from Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Three years after meeting, they started collaboration on a four-hands piano project dedicated to classic jazz, preparing arrangements of songs from the Swing Era, while drawing from the ragtime, and blues repertoire. Their first project explored the formula of four-hands duets on one piano, rarely used in jazz. They recorded CDs “Two for One” (2012), and “Sentimental Journey” (2014). “Double Trio Live” (2015), and “Double Trio Always” (2016), were recorded in the piano trio setting. “Broadway and More” (2018) was their first album on two pianos. Their most recent project is “I Love Erroll, I Love James P.” (2020), a double album, featuring the compositions of two legendary figures of jazz piano, Erroll Garner and James P. Johnson. Their dedication to jazz and the repertoire of early American popular music is accompanied in equal measure by a desire to share its rich history. They perform in schools and universities world-wide. Their programs include lectures, concert lessons for students of all ages, and master classes. A few of the topics they cover are “History of Jazz”, “Intersections of Jazz and classical music”, “Women in Jazz”, and “Ragtime”. Blending impeccable technique with mature musicality, this piano duo has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia, at some of the world’s most extraordinary venues and festivals, winning the acclaim of critics and fans alike. Nicole began playing piano at age seven and, by age 10, had memorized over 500 songs. At age twelve, she won First place in the Discovery National Television Competition and appeared on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. For the next couple of years, she packed in an extensive US tour and a year-long residency in Las Vegas.
