JAZZ on March 19th at San Marcos chandler #jazz
We hope you are able to join us for a fun afternoon on the 19th and I have also learned of something else you may want to attend. Many of you may remember when bassist/vocalist Kristin Korb was a member of the All Stars at our Festivals. Kristin will be appearing for two shows at the Century Room in Tucson on March 24h, 7:00 or 9:00 p.m., and at The Nash in Phoenix on March 25, 7:30 p.m. WILDCAT JAZZ BAND The Wildcat Jazz Band is a first class Traditional Jazz Band. They will be entertaining for the Arizona Classic Jazz Society on March 19th from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Phoenix-Chandler Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Downtown Chandler. The show is open to the public and tickets will be available at the door. The reason that the word jazz brings something different to the minds of many people is that musicians back in the ¡°olden¡± days played what became known as Traditional Jazz (New Orleans-style, Dixieland, Classic), but then started experimenting with different sounds and rhythms and still called it jazz. Dixieland became important in the early 20th century and its major influences were ragtime, blues, gospel, and military brass bands. The music spread through the U.S. and then Europe as musicians left New Orleans for other locals. When the Wildcats first formed as a group, they described what they did as offering traditional New Orleans and Chicago jazz, performed in a spirit and style that is true to its musical roots and wildly popular with audiences around the United States. A Facebook contributor who attended a recent show the band performed put it simply: ¡°Some of the most talented musicians this side of Heaven.¡± As the music evolved in Chicago, the cornet, trombone, clarinet, drums, and piano were maintained, however, the tuba was replaced with a string bass and guitar replaced the banjo. A saxophone was often added. The timing changed from 4/4 to 2/4 (with the accent put on beats 2 and 4 rather and 1 and 3). Whereas New Orleans-style emphasized ensemble playing, Chicago-style introduced more solos and faster, hard-driving tempos. You will be able to enjoy these different genres of jazz with the Wildcats at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler on March 19, 1 - 4 p.m. The band members are Rob Wright (leader/banjo/guitar), Rob Boone (trombone), Evan Dain (bass/vocals), Rick Peron (trumpet), Marco Rosano, (reeds), Ray Templin (piano), and Arthur Vint (drums). You will witness how this band perpetuates and preserves traditional jazz as an art form. One important aspect of Traditional Jazz (and some say the most important), it is danceable. Two dance floors are provided and both table or theater seating are available. Cost is $15 members; $20 non-members, cash or check. Become a new member of ACJS on the 19th and get in free that day (yearly membership couple $35; single $25). For more information contact Helen Daley 480-620-3941 or www.azclassicjazz.org

LW (Moonlight Serenade) Dinner Dance March 24, 2022
Our Friday, March 24, dance is rapidly approaching. The theme is Under the Sea with music by the Sonoran Swing Band. This is our final dance of the year, so dress up and enjoy one last big fling before our winter visitors flee back to their summer homes, not to be seen til next season. The menu for this dance is either Pork Osso Bucco or Chicken Piccata (I looked up the pork dish and it looks interesting enough that I¡¯m going to try it), along with mashed potatoes & zucchini, Caesar salad, baguette, and tiramisu for dessert. Please make an entr¨¦e choice and let me know, along with dietary restrictions (which I promise to try to remember), and seatmate selections, unless you want to meet new friends. Prompt reply is appreciated. If you choose not to eat at the dance and prefer to take your meal home, let us know in advance, so we can coordinate with the kitchen ahead of time. Guests are welcome at $85 per couple. Checks should be made out to Moonlight Serenade and mailed to 1357 Leisure World, Mesa 85206 Remind guests of our dress code. Cocktail dresses for the ladies and long sleeve dress shirts and coats for the men. BYOB with setup furnished. Our dates for the 2023/2024 season have been set. November 11, 2023, January 13, 2024, February 10, 2024, and March 16, 2024. Our membership fee will be $290 for the 4 dinner dances. $95 for guest couples. Cost of food is the reason for the slight increase. Still the best dance bargain around. Bringing your membership renewal to this March dance would be splendid. Gives our Treasurer time to analyze our budget¡¡ There are band costs and meal costs that have to be carefully factored in! We struggle to keep our dues low, yet cover costs. Your support is greatly appreciated. Remember, $290 for the 2023/2024 season Anyone interested in serving on our Board or helping in any way is welcome to contact any Board member and let us know. Mardi Gras time with ACJS #jazz #dance
Ways to help ACJS: attend our monthly events and pay membership dues. MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) falls on February 21st this year. The words ¡°Mardi Gras¡± or ¡°Carnival¡± always bring to mind New Orleans, food, parades, beads, partying, music, dancing, costumes, and masks. It started as a pagan celebration of spring and fertility thousands of years ago. Christian leaders determined it was easier to adopt the tradition rather than forbid it. The Mardi Gras season, French for ¡°Fat Tuesday,¡± officially begins every year on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, but its conclusion varies every year because it occurs exactly forty-seven days before Easter, which is the start of the Lenten season and falls on Tuesday, February 21st, this year. Party Hearty or Hardy for several weeks and then repent during Lent. Anyway, that is the theory. In current times, Mardi Gras-style parties are celebrated any time of year. The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will celebrate the fun part of Mardi Gras on Sunday, February 19th, 1 - 4 p.m., in the San Marcos Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Phoenix-Chandler Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler. The Mardi Gras Jazz Band will be led by Cheryl Thurston and jammers are welcome. Beads will be plentiful as will second-line parades and dancing. Mardi Gras has its own colors: purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power). Masks and costumes are welcome. Cost is $20 per person, paid at the door (cash or check only). For more information go to www.azclassicjazz.org or call 480-620-3941.
