ACJS/F UPDATE

开云体育

There is a song entitled All Good Things (Come to an End.)? It is not a happy tune. I have to tell you now that the Arizona Classic Jazz Society/Festival will no longer exist after the end of this year, 2024.? We've had a good run; many people say ours is the best Festival on the jazz circuit.? We have experienced that music tastes change with the times and everything cycles.? The Evaluation comments from the 2023 Festival suggested we offer more country music, however, that would defeat our original purpose of promoting and perpetuating classic jazz. ?

Festival attendance is down from year to year and badge prices have never paid for the Festival.? If not for our wonderful sponsors and cosponsors, we would have had to close many years ago.? The State of Arizona has cut the Arizona Commission on the Arts budget by 60%.? Grant recipients received notice that any grant amounts would be greatly reduced or eliminated for 2025.? This year's award was $11,500.?

An angel rescued the Society's Sunday programs this year.? It costs more than $2,000 a month to keep the Society afloat and we feel fortunate when we take in $500 on Sundays.? The last Sunday event will take place on December 1.? ?

The school programs will continue for another two years.

We do not have a young Board of Directors and there are no new, willing volunteers.? Half of the Board are in their 80s, with two close to 90 years old.? Four members gave notice that this would be their last year serving; leaving the Board with four less than the required minimum of eight members.? Based on increasing challenges, it was decided by a majority vote that Festival Year 35 was a good stopping point and that we should close at the end of 2024 while we can still cover all our expenses. ?

Since we are a 501(c)3 organization, we cannot just close our doors and say, "That's it."? Treasurer Miller Lee and I recently met with a financial specialist well acquainted with the procedures necessary to close down and she provided us with step-by-step instructions. ?

Please attend our last Festival, October 31 - November 3, this year.? It will offer the same high quality bands that have been the key to our longevity.? Festival special sets are "Something Unexpected" and will offer a wide variety of music and fun.

There may still be occasional programs similar to ours that take place throughout the Valley and I will be happy to alert my email list to those events. ?

Thank you to our dedicated Board Members (and their spouses) and all the members-at-large for your exceptional loyalty through the years, the great bands which have attracted an audience from far and near, the hardworking Festival volunteers, Festival attendees and Sponsors and Cosponsors who have helped keep our doors open for so long. ? ?

It has been a pleasure serving all of you,

Helen Daley & Your ACJS Board of Directors?

Diana Burns notified me that we lost another loyal Merrymaker this week, even though she hadn't been a member for some years

Angie Vincent passed in her sleep on June 24, 2024, she was 93.
Angie was a long time member of Merry Maker's and a great dancer.
For many years Mike & I would pick her up and bring her to the dances.
She is missed, but know she's now found lots of her friends!

Howard Standage

The attached flyer is about Sunday Dance Classes to be held this summer at Sun Lakes. It is a beginners intro class to the traditional ballroom dances. I know most of your recipients are likely too advanced of dancers to be interested but this should be appealing to anyone they know that might like to take up ballroom dancing. I have asked Mona Brandt to teach the classes. All the relevant information is in the flyer. The class is open to everyone, not just Sun Lakes residents. No dance shoes required as well if they do not have a pair. We will provide dance ribbons for their shoes (no flip flops).??

Thanks so much!

John Yu

Remember Merrymakers dances continue on Thursday nights at 7pm at Las Palmas Grand through the month of April. To give our members (and other dancers who are still here) the maximum opportunity to dance, we are holding the dances, even though we are losing money every week. Bands for the last 3 dances are:
April 11 - Palmer & Rossana
April 18 - Midnight Moon
April 26 - The Breeze

I'd added it to my schedule and thought I'd sent it out, but apparently it didn't go. Rick is having a Celebration of Life for his wife, Dee, as part of the dance this Thursday afternoon at the Granite Reef Senior Center from 12-2. Come share your memories and enjoy the refreshments.

Correction and New News

开云体育

Good news for our out-of-Leisure World-guests, our Security Department has agreed to leave the exit gate out to Southern Avenue open until 10:00 so our guests don’t have to leave before the dance ends to get out that gate.? We’re ever so grateful

?

And last message I said our January dance was on the 23rd of January,?2025.? Should be Saturday the 25th of January.? All Saturdays next season.

?

ALSO, in response to inquiries I’ve had from new folks, ?the Rec 2 doors open at 5:00 p.m on dance night and the band starts playing at 5:30 p.m.?? Dinner is served about 6:30.? The band plays until 9:30 p.m.

?For GPS users or Uber, I understand the exact address of Rec 2 is 1548 Leisure World.??

Enjoy

Just a reminder of our dance coming up March 16, with the Swing Memories big band.

?

Also, a heads up to mark your calendars for next season:

?November 23, 2024; January 23, 2025, February 22, 2025, March 22, 2025. ??Bands TBD

?

The membership fee for the 2024/2025 season will be $305.00 per couple.? This is an increase of only $15 to hopefully cover the raise in price of our food and music.? $100/couple for guest couples? If you’re on board with us again next year, it would be great if you could pay at this dance.?

?

Don’t forget it is BYOB for all beverages.? Wine glasses provided.

?

And gentlemen, don’t forget your coat and tie!!

?

See you there.
