Forgot For FT-8/4 Folk.....
开云体育I forgot some hints to make your FT-8/4 rates faster and more successful.Time: Make sure your computer clock is as dead on correct time as possible!? Well Sorta...... It changes quickly! Last night at 10PM mine was 10 ms fast. But just now the morning checking it's quite a bit more fast. TOO Fast. I try to be between 50 and 100 ms fast. That may sound counter productive when all the paperwork says you should try to have your time be as close to dead on as possible. They say the further off from dead on the less chances of being decoded happens. And yes that is true. You get too far off from sync with everyone else and you percentage of being decoded drops off a cliff! I see some degradation at +100ms, but barely noticeable, and at +150ms, it seems rates drop like 50% and it gets really bad any higher! Of course all this timing also all depends on what the majority of people on the air what their timings are! If everyone else is running fast, then if you are dead on you end up being slow and that is VERY BAD!!!! Even just 50ms slow and you are lucky to get any answers to your calls at all! So watch the waterfall also. See how peoples signals are spacing with the timing lines? Adjust as needed, so you will be transmitting that 50 to 100 ms early. Now why would I want to do this? If I am on purpose loosing a small percentage of being decoded? It is all on how the software works.? This of course mainly only applies to you answering someone's CQ. You CQing this does not apply. The software by default after it finishes CQing listens for callers. If you are the only caller and he hears ya, of course he works ya! But what happens if you end up being one of 20 calling him, and yes that's not uncommon. Who does he end up working if he is running his software in default mode which like 90% of people do. By default he answers to the First station he decoded. Ding Ding Ding Ding see the reason to be just a little faster than everyone else? If you end up being the first he decodes you will be who he calls. That's one way to increase your rate. Next, is a setting in your system.? Say you are CQing, and people call you. again One person, no problem, you work him. But if again 20 called, Who do you answer? And remember you got seconds to decide.? One thing I do is to activate this feature. Here you have three choices, Last Decoded:, where the last station you decoded is who it will answer. Distance: this one is great for contests that you get more points the further the station is away! And for Field Day or 99% of other contests or even every day to day operation, I use Signal Strength: Choose this and the strongest signal is who you will answer. Being the strongest obviously will help you make the complete contact with as few repeats as possible. How about when you are running S&P Search And Pounce where you are looking for people CQing and calling them. A cycle has ended and you are looking at this! Who do you choose to call? Remember you got like no seconds to waste. especially in FT-4, And you are using FT-4 right!? he he he.? But honestly who do you choose to call? Remember first decoded usually wins the contact! Take too long to decide and you will loose being not first decoded. and have to wait for the next Chance to call them, at least then the computer will decide when to call, and hopefully be ahead of everyone else. I ignore That window! I use this one! Many things are happening in this window, First, each cycle this is populated with what it heard. AND In this case it is told to ONLY show me stations CQing! AND To ONLY show me stations I have not worked yet. do not show me any others. Or anyone NOT CQing. AND To sort them in order of signal strength strongest at the top. AND Color Code them. All here are in BLUE because I was using the Field Day parameters. There are no Mults in FD so all the stations are in BLUE. And good to work. But if this was a contest with mults, and say the station F4JRC is a new Mult, F4JRC, would be in RED, and you would click on him first! Simply clicking on his call starts the calling process. So when answering CQ's 99% of the time you would sit there with you mouse already in the top window, and as soon as the recv cycle loads you don't even look at who the top call is you just "Click" and ur calling them. No delay at all so odds are you are first to be decoded again? The only time you'd move you mouse is if a RED New Mult showed up. And you'd call him at the next chance. =============== Now Thursday Night is a Great chance to try all this out and or get practice. Every Thursday evening is the NCCC FT-4 Sprint. DETAILS: The Northern California?Club is again pleased to sponsor our weekly FT4 Sprint, aka FT4NS (NCCC?Sprint).?? This contest is held every Friday UTC between 0100Z and 0130Z (Thursday evening in North America). Non-North American stations are welcome to participate. No logs are necessary; please submit your score to??using the "NCCC?FT4 Sprint" template. Contest to use in the logger is the NCCC_FT4Sprint one.? ? Last week, we had? posted scores, all of them with 18 Qs or
more. NOT BAD fo a 30 minute window.? From the East Coast, both
10? and 15m were open to JA- quite a change from past weeks.??
The RSGB FT International Day Contest is coming up on April 5.?
Its a 12 or 24 hour contest, and a lot of fun!? Mults are DXCC per
band- hope to see some more activity from US.
FT4 NS Sprint Rules are posted at?
See you on the screen!
Frequencies 1839, 3575, 7047.5, 14080, 21140, 28180, 50318
Hope to see some of you there!? I'll be on either 15 or 40, Probably if the band is open try 15 for 15 min and then go to 40 for the second half. Joe WB9SBD

FT-8/4 Strategies...
开云体育For you FT mode folk,For Field Day, Try to use FT-4 as much as possible. Use FT-4 until you run out of people to contact. Then switch to FT-8. Do FT-8 for like 30 minutes and then try FT-4 again. Reason? Really simple! You can make twice as many contacts for any given amount of time! BUT, BUT, BUT, FT-4 is not as sensitive as FT-8. While this is true, And FT-4 is about 4 db less sensitive than FT-8, and that is HUGE in the VHF/UHF world! Where you have quiet bands, and no interfering stations. 4 db is gigantic! Especially when you have a chance to get anywhere near the max sensitivity of those programs. But On the HF bands with a LOT of band noises, in addition Field Day with the kazillion of competing signals, you are not gonna get anywhere near the program sensitivity spec's anyway. And 4 db? it is not even 1 S unit. it is only 2/3rds of a S unit difference. During Field Day you are NOT gonna see this difference. If ya wanna get some awesome FT contest type of operating practice, every Thursday evening is a 30 minute sprint, that it's sole purpose is to make you a better FT contester! Details can be found here. Give it a try, it's kind of fun! Joe WB9SBD |

7.3.12 site visitation by a representative of an agency
Joe and the group,
I have an email out to Sauk County Emergency Management who our ARES/RACES group works very closely with. I’ve invited them to field day and asked that they forward the invitation to anyone they may feel would be interested. I’ll let you know what I hear? |
2024 Field Day!
开云体育Being so involved in getting this 2025 Field Day going,I never noticed anyone saying that the results for 2024 have been published! So I went and looked. YES! I do not remember exactly why I was not with YTARC FD, I'm thinking sick? Or something here made me stay at home? Anyway ran a Long wire up into a 60 foot tree, Ran 1B-Battery-QRP 5 watts. I remember having good luck,? I guess so! I took... 1st Place In Wisconsin 1st Place in 9 Land WI, IL, IN, and 5th Place in the whole country! YES! Joe WB9SBD |
Re: Field Day Stations locations.
开云体育Hi Jude,Ok will edit the Buddypole out. No Problem. Yeah, below the yellow line in the past where it's looks like it's mowed is in past years very short. not even ankle high. Only where when way down does it get taller. Driveable, That's just one thing just like the VHF/UHF station and NQ9D also a tent person. If it hasnt rained I don't see any problems driving out there.? The only thing is we will need to see what it is like if it did or does rain, and what the ground gets like? It being a ridgetop it could Be all rocky. I know pounding in stakes or masts for verticals is HARD to do, the ground is very hard. Just will have to check it out when we get there. Only thing is to "Drive" out there is a roundabout way. Right next to the official Park along the main road it looks nice in the image but it is a pretty nasty ditch, but the property owner said for anyone that wants to go south to use his driveway to get out there like this. And the Porta Potty is where the Yellow X is. Joe On 3/21/2025 9:51 PM, Jude, KD9WWA

Re: Field Day Stations locations.
Joe, To be clear. I do not own a buddy pole. I have a 32' carbon mast that will be set in a hitch mount on the rear of my SUV (if I use that at all). If there is windy conditions, I won't be setting that up. I will most likely use my TDL antenna. The diagram doesn't have me in a place. All the big trailers are along the road on the picture and you are putting me south of the yellow line in taller grass but if it's not drivable that won't work. Maybe I need to locate my vehicle along the road as well. I have never been to this park, so have no idea what to expect. Also, where will the Porta potty be located? I may need to stumble to that at night. Thanks! 73, Jude, W9LMC On Mar 21, 2025 9:01 PM, "Joe WB9SBD via groups.io" <nss@...> wrote:

Field Day Stations locations.
开云体育Evening everyone.I have been working off list with the station owners to see what we can do to make the best layout locations of all the stations. Just finished Today. Everyone, Including the Station Owners, Please go to the web site And navigate to the Positions Page. I have two tasks for you all. Station Owners and the rest, look how we have the stations laid out at the site. If you think there might be a better layout TELL ME!!!!? Now is when we want to make changes if any. NOT on Field Day Weekend!!! The other thing is OK we got Stations, locations, Now we need two more things! More operators other than the stations owners! They can't sit there for more than 24 hours non-stop! We need more Op's And Bonus stuff.? Hardly anyone has come forward to say they will do any bonus points. There is a LOT of them! 100 bonus points which is the value for most of the bonus items is the same as making 100 phone contacts!!!! We earn say 3 of the bonus items thats like making 300 contacts!!! Check out the bonus things and see if you can take any of them on! Joe WB9SBD |
Re: P.I.O. Table & Gota Station.
开云体育Put my camper in the spot circled. We have options, I will be anchoring my awning so I can leave it out the whole weekend (sand bags). Under my awning (facing the lot) both tables will fit easily with plenty of room to spare. We can then either add the banner to the awning supports, or I can bring t-posts and we can place the banner in the grass to the north of the lot the camper is in. If other supporting clubs bring banners, we can add them easily as well.?Also, I will have a generator out (not being used for the radios, but to power the outlets and refrigerators on the camper) (I hate to say it, but my generator is to small to add anything else).?
NO PEOPLE but me and my wife will be allowed inside the camper, but I will be happy to let people use my refrigerator inside (I will take it in and bring it out) and a flat grill and a refrigerator are available for use outside? Ray

Re: P.I.O. Table & Gota Station.
开云体育Ok, Since this will be our GOTA Station AND the 7.3.4. Public Information Table. We will want them to be in the most prominent location front and center. Like here. We can place on the side of the camper the club banner, to help the public know what's happening. So Ray's camper he says is 35 feet.? So ray, the add on for the public information table area you described you could set up. how much added space will that add to the 35 feet? Or how do you think we could lay this out? Maybe keep the east west 35 of the camper as is. and put the PIO table into the grassy area south of the camper close to the GOTA station. thoughts? Joe WB9SBD ? On 3/14/2025 9:18 PM, Ray WX9RAY via

What ya think of putting them side by side, so maybe we can even get some of the visitors to Get On The Air! Thoughts? Joe WB9SBD |
Re: FDFA Status as of -3-13-2025
开云体育Well lets go through the GOTA Rules,4.1.1. Get On The Air (GOTA) Station. Any Class A or F entry whose transmitter classification is two or more transmitters may also operate one additional station without changing its base entry category, known as the Get On The Air (GOTA) station. This GOTA station may operate on any Field Day band, HF or VHF, but is limited to one GOTA station transmitted signal at any time. (No Problems there) 4.1.1.1. GOTA Stations Call: This station must use a different callsign from the primary Field Day station. The GOTA station must use the same callsign for the duration of the event regardless if operators change. The GOTA station uses the same exchange as its parent. (When we get closer we can decide what call the GOTA Station will use, so again No Problems) 4.1.1.2. The GOTA station may be operated by any person licensed since the previous year’s Field Day, regardless of license class. It may also be operated by a generally inactive licensee. Non-licensed persons may participate under the direct supervision of an appropriate control operator. A list of operators and participants must be included on the required summary sheet to ARRL HQ. (That first sentence is worded kind of strangely. Then add in the next sentence, and doesn't that mean anyone can operate at the GOTA station? I mean I'm an Extra class and got my License in 1975,? and I have been licensed since last years field day, doesn't 50 years count? I wonder if that is a typo or bad grammar? Like maybe they intended it to say, "The GOTA station may be operated by any person who "BECAME LICENSED" since the previous year’s Field Day.? Thoughts gang?) 4.1.1.3. As per FCC rules, this station must have a valid control operator present at the control point if operating beyond the license privileges of the participant using the station. (No Problem) 4.1.1.4. The maximum transmitter output power for the GOTA station shall be 100 watts. If the primary Field Day group is claiming the QRP multiplier level of five (5), the maximum transmitter output power of the GOTA station may not exceed 5 watts. 4.1.1.5. There is no limit to the number of contacts made by the GOTA station. QSOs made by this station may be claimed for credit by its primary Field Day operation. In addition, bonus points may be earned by this station under rule 7.3.13. (No Problem) 4.1.1.6. The GOTA station may operate on any Field Day band. Only one transmitted signal is allowed from the GOTA station at any time. (No Problem) 4.1.1.7. The GOTA station does not affect the additional VHF/UHF station provided for under Field Day Rule 4.1.2. for Class A stations. (No Problem) 4.1.1.8. Participants are reminded that non-licensed participants working under the direction of a valid control operator may only communicate with other W/VE stations or with stations in countries with which the US has entered a third-party agreement. 4.1.1.9. The GOTA station does not qualify as an additional transmitter when determining the number of transmitters eligible for the 100-point emergency power bonus under Rule 7.3.1. (No Problem) 7.3.13. GOTA Bonus: Class A and F stations operating a GOTA station may earn the following bonus points: 7.3.13.1. Any successfully completed contacts made by an operator at the GOTA station are worth five (5) bonus points, regardless of mode used. There is no limit to the number of contacts a single GOTA operator can make. The GOTA station bonus points are not multiplied by the power multiplier (this is a clarification of the rules published in 2023.) 7.3.13.2. If a GOTA station is supervised by a GOTA Coach, a single 100-point bonus will be earned. (YES! This Kicks ASS! The other stations 1 point for Phone 2 for CW or digital!? 5 points per contact for the GOTA Gang! WOW! Now you see why I said we MUST havea GOTA Station!) 7.3.13.2.1. The GOTA Coach supervises the operator of the station, doing such things as answering questions and talking them through contacts, but may not make contacts or perform logging functions. (See below at the next Rule) 7.3.13.2.2. To qualify for this bonus, there must be a designated GOTA Coach present and supervising for at least 10 contacts. I wonder why this is made as a separate rule from 7.3.13.2.1? (But Hey I'll take the 100 points!) So what's everyone think especially Ray, since he stepped forward and volunteered to be our GOTA Station! Joe WB9SBD On 3/14/2025 4:29 PM, Ray WX9RAY via

Now, of you five, Who of you would be interested in being the GOTA Station? We REALLY NEED a GOTA Station! The GOTA station can be worth far more points than any of the other stations! QSO points alone are worth per contact MORE than the other stations! It can be where we get young people to get on and try to make some contacts worth a LOT of points! read up in the rules to see what the requirements to be the GOTA station are. go to? and follow the links to where you can download the official rules packet. The GOTA station should be at least during the daytime and early evening when visitors may come by it should be outside and visible. several are bringing large campers and such, so hidden inside them would not be good for the GOTA station, unless you can set up outside of it during times of possible visitations. Who wants to be GOTA!? OPERATORS! We need MORE operators!? We have 5 stations so far. But only 6 Operators. The 5 station owners and ME!? We want to try to keep all the stations running for the full 24 hours. not too many people are capable of doing this so for those stations that are open to letting someone else run their station while they take a break GREAT! But we NEED BODIES!!! I Guess first let me know if you are OK with someone else running your station when you are taking a break! Spread the word at your clubs! We Need non-owner operators!
