Canton at California

Game 1 Tide 5 Comets 2 -- Donovan Osborne baffled the Canton hitters and took a 5-1 lead to the ninth before tiring. Canton scored once and had the bases loaded but reliever Gregg Olson retired Lenny Webster to get the save. The Tide were led by Wade
Boggs who had a double and a two-run homer and scored twice. George Bell had three hits, including a double and scored twice. Joe Carter hit a solo homerun. Danny Tartabull had three hits for the Comets and Ricky Jordan added a pair of safeties in a losing
effort.?
Game 2 Comets 3 Tide 1 -- Mark McGwire hit a two-run homer and Mike Bordick drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and that was all the support Ron Darling and four relievers would need for Canton in game 2. Darling allowed a run on four hits in five innings.
The bullpen allowed just one hit and one walk over the final four innings and Jay Howell picked up the save. Joe Carter had a pair of hits and scored on a Wade Boggs single for the Tide.
Game 3 Comets 6 Tide 2-- Denny Martinez gave up a two-out single to George Bell in the bottom of the first and Sid Bream drove his next offering into the bleachers for an early Tide lead. Martinez would allow only three hits the rest of the way, two
by Bell, to get the win in game 3. The Comets scored a run in the fourth on a ground out but trailed 2-1 going to the seventh. With one out, the Comets loaded the bases on a walk, a single and another walk to bring Albert Belle to the plate to face reliever
Jeff Fassero. Belle drilled a Fassero fastball into the center-field seats for a 5-2 lead. A two-out error and a single brought Bream to the plate as the tying run in the bottom of the eighth but Martinez induced a fly ball to end the threat. The Comets manufactured
an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a couple of singles, a stolen base and a ground out. Martinez put down the side in order in the ninth.?

Just what the Doctor Ordered
The Isotopes, mired in a team-wide offensive slump, may have found the spark they were looking for during Sunday's three-game home set versus the Antelope River Cats. The Fish piled up 27 hits in Games 1 and 2 before relying on their pitching in the series finale.?
Barry Bonds, the No. 2 pick in the 1992 draft, whacked two doubles and a homer in the opener as the Fish routed the last place Cats 13-3. Jeff Huson contributed with three hits, two runs and three RBI, and Pedro Astacio did his part by twirling a complete game six hitter, the only blemishes being home runs by Brian Downing and Eric Karros. However, the victory came at a price, as post-game x-rays relieved that Astacio suffered a torn rotator cuff in the win and thus will be shelved for the remainder of the campaign.? With Bonds taking the remainder of the series of for "maintenance", his replacement Eric Davis got a chance to shine in Game 2, and he did, with three hits, two runs and two RBI, including his first home run of the year. Chuck Finley and three relievers limited Antelope to five hits in Springfield's 6-2 win. Karros went deep again, his seventh, tied for fourth most in the division. The Fish collected only four hits in the series finale, against seven for the Cats, but made the most of their knocks in a 4-1 win. Antelope starter Tim Belcher (2-6, 5.24) walked the bases full in the third and paid the price, Orlando Merced's one-out single plating two. Downing's bases loaded walk in the fourth made it 2-1, but the 'Topes added two more in the sixth, Huson doubling home a run and Daryl Boston launching his third homer of the year. Jose Guzman worked into the sixth inning to improve to 3-1 on the year, while Doug Jones (0-2, 1.46) worked the ninth for his division-best 10th save. |

Game 1 Comets 5 Hurons 2 -- Canton got on the board quickly with an RBI-double in the top of the first. The Hurons answered just as quickly as Mickey Tettleton stroked a two-run homer off Dennis Martinez to put the home team up 2-1 after 1. That would
be all Martinez would allow as he gave up just one hit the rest of the way. Mike Sharperson's two-out, base clearing double in the top of the second provided all the runs Martinez would need to improve to 6-2 on the season. Milt Thompson, Brian Jordan and
Danny Tartabull had a pair of hits apiece for the Comets, with Thompson and Jordan scoring twice and Tartabull once.
Game 2 Comets 3 Hurons 0 -- Mark McGwire hit a two-out, two-run homer off Greg Maddux to allow the Comets to play from ahead in game 2. Todd Burns and four relievers would do the rest as they combined for a six-hit shutout. Mariano Duncan added an insurance
homer late for the final tally. Jerry Browne had two hits to lead the Comets and was aboard for McGwire's homer. Bobby Bonilla had a pair of singles for the Hurons.?
Game 3 Comets 3 Hurons 1 -- Kenny Lofton led off the bottom of the first with a single off Bill Swift. Lofton stole second and was chased home by a double by Bip Roberts as the Hurons went up 1-0. Dennis Cook took the 1-0 lead to the sixth where he was
lifted after Mike Bordick's leadoff double. Vince Coleman greeted reliever James Austin with a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run to third. Austin then uncorked a pitch to the screen and Bordick scored to tie it at 1. Sharperson drew a walk and was aboard
when Mark McGwired launched a two-out, two-run homer to make it 3-1 Comets. Swift worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the bottom of the 8th to get the win. The Hurons loaded the bags on a walk, an infield single and an error before Swift got Tino
Martinez to hit ground ball for a force at the plate for out number 1. Lofton lined out to Mark McGwire for the second out and Swift got Roberts on strikes to end the threat. Swift put the side down in order in the ninth to improve to 3-2 on the season.?

Canton at Ringgold

Game 1 RiverRats 2 Comets 0 -- David Cone tossed a four-hit shutout and walked just one in going the distance. Brady Anderson provided the offense with an RBI double and a solo homer off Canton starter Todd Burns. Burns went six innings allowing only
4 hits. Two potential Comets rallies were wiped out by double plays.
Game 2 Comets 4 RiverRats 2 -- Walt Weiss led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Sharperson for an early 1-0 Comets lead. The lead was increased as Mark McGwire tripled home a pair of runs off starter Randy Tomlin
in the fourth. Leo Gomez answered with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning off Comets' starter Dave Fleming to make it 3-1 Comets. Brett Butler cut the lead iin half with a two-out, RBI single in the seventh. Butler stole second to get into scoring
position but then inexplicably tried to steal third and was thrown out by Don Slaught. Ken Caminiti gave the Comets an insurance tally with an RBI single in the top of the ninth and Jay Howell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.?
Game 3 Comets 6 RiverRats 5 --Mark McGwire hit his third homer of the game following a Don Slaught RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to bring the Comets back from a 5-3 deficit to win the series. The RiverRats scored their five runs off Comets'
starter Ron Darling. Ringgold batters drew four walks off of Darling and all four scored. Tony Pena doubled home two runs to lead the way. Jay Howell worked around a Pena single in the ninth for his second save of the series.?

Turtles snap Fish
They say good pitching beats good hitting. For sure, good pitching beats bad hitting. The Turtles welcomed the Fish to the Island Tuesday afternoon and paddled away with two wins in three games.
The series featured teams going in opposite directions. Treasure Island began the season with just three wins in their first 12 games, but the Turtles have been a .500+ club since the rough start. The Isotopes, meanwhile, started fast, winning 15 against just six defeats in large part due to their potent offense. But the bats have cooled off, the Fish now hitting just .213, explanation enough for Springfield's drop to third place in the division. The opener featured two of the better pitchers in the NL, Treasure Island's Sid Fernandez and Springfield's Bob Tewksbury. Tewks allowed four hits and zero walks over seven strong innings, while his counterpart was just as good, allowing four hits and four walks in nine. The game turned on one pitch, a Tewksbury eephus with two outs in the seventh inning that was deposited into the right field bleachers by Lance Parrish (.185 BA, 3 HR). It ended 1-0, with Fernandez (2.33 ERA) improving to 3-4, while Tewksbury (1.94) saw his record fall to 5-2. For almost eight innings of Game 2 it looked like the Isotopes might suffer a second straight shutout loss. The Turtles scored two in the first thanks to hits by Paul Molitor and Bernard Gilkey, and the excellent Jaime Navarro (5-3, 2.00) looked to make the lead stand up, giving up just three hits in shutout seven innings. But an error by Omar Vizquel put a runner on in the eighth, and, with two outs, Fish pinch hitter Jack Clark whacked a game-tying home run off Navarro. Springfield's joy was brief, however. Deon Sanders walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth, swiped second, and scored on Molitor's single, his second run-scoring hit of the game. Jeff Montgomery worked a perfect ninth to record his seventh save. Unfortunately for the home fans, there would be no sweep. After collecting nine hits over Games 1 and 2, Springfield totaled 12 in the series finale, three from Spike Owen and two apiece from Kent Hrbek, Eric Davis and Barry Bonds. The Isotopes cruised 7-3. Curt Schilling allowed five hits and two earned runs, running his record to a perfect 7-0 on the year. Curt's seven wins and 1.51 ERA are best among qualified starters in the NL. The Turtles improved to 18-21, tied for fifth in the Seitz. The Isotopes (22-17) are in third, four and a half back of the Trailers. |

Put Up or Shut Up
Through the first 25 or so games of the 1992 season, Barry Bonds and the Isotopes looked down their collective noses at the rest of the National League, aka the Tiant Division. At 17-7, Springfield was in danger of running away with the pennant, and their slugging outfielder was at or near the top of the leaderboard in runs, runs driven in and OBP. But as the well known expression has it, as Bonds goes, so go the Fish. Springfield took a trip to St. Louis over the weekend for a series against the Grizzlies. Bonds was 2 for 10 with one run and RBI, and the 'Topes lost all three games.
The 6-0 Curt Schilling took the mound in the opener for the Fish against Jimmy Key, 0-0 in three starts with St. Louis. Jeff Blauser (Jeff Blauser?) whacked his seventh home run of the year (one behind Juan Gonzalez for tops in the division) to?give the Griz an early 1-0 lead, but Todd Zeile doubled to tie the score at 1-1 in the third. It was still 1-1 in the eighth when the Fish rallied, scoring one on a Spanky LaValliere squeeze and another thanks to a Blauser error (Blauser?). Chris Sabo homered for St. Louis in the bottom of the inning to narrow the deficit to 3-2, meaning in the ninth, Springfield's manager had a tough decision to make. Let Curt finish the job, or bring in Doug Jones, who had allowed just one earned run in 15 innings pitched. Jones got the call from the bullpen, Mark Grace singled, Dave Hollins doubled him to third and then Rob Deer hit a routine grounder to Spike Owen at short. Owen, in his haste to field the ball cleanly and get Grace at home, booted the easy chance. Two runs scored, and that was the ballgame. St. Louis took the opener, 4-3. Really, that was as good as it got for the Isotopes. The Grizzlies stomped the Fish in Game 2 by a score of 11-1. Orel Hershiser went the distance for the home team, scattering five hits to improve to 2-1 on the year. St. Louis' 6-7-8 hitters, Marquis Grisson, Ellis Burks and Mike MacFarlane, each went deep for the Griz. Game 3 was closer, at least the final score would indicate it was. Smelling blood in the water, St. Louis put up three in the first, the last two coming on Dave Justice's first home run of the year. Springfield rallied to within 5-4, but the Grizzlies scored three in the seventh, the key blow being Head Hollins two-run triple (his 18 RBI are fifth best in the NL). St. Louis won 8-5. Mark Gubicza (3-4, 3.07) went five for the W, and four relievers made it official. After the sweep, the Grizzlies are in fourth, at 18-15. Springfield (21-15) is in second, and asking for more, much more, of the left-handed Bonds, currently hitting just .242. |

Game 1 Comets 6 Hurons 5 -- Mike Bordick hit a bases-loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to win a see-saw affair to start the series. The Hurons took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Tino Martinez single. Paul O'Neill increased
the advantage with a solo homer in the fourth. A Kelly Gruber sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the sixth. The Comets finally broke the goose egg in the bottom of the sixth with a run-scoring ground out to make it 3-1. The Comets took their first lead of the contest
in the seventh as Danny Tarabull drew a bases-loaded walk to pull the home team to within a run and with two outs, Rickey Jordan laced a two-out single for a 4-3 lead. The lead was short-lived as Gary Sheffield doubled off Rick Aguilera and scored the tying
run on a heads-up dash for home on a Mickey Tettleton ground out to the hole at short. Ruben Sierra followed with a solo homer to put the Hurons up a run. Hurons' reliever Jeff Parrett was greeted by a leadoff single by Jerry Browne and Parrett hit Mike Bordick
on the foot with a curveball to put two on and bring reliever Mark Guthrie from the bullpen. Guthrie struck out Vince Coleman but gave up a game-tying single to Mike Sharperson to set up Bordick's ninth inning walk-off.?
Game 2 Comets 10 Hurons 4 -- Mark McGwire cracked three homers, drove in 7 and scored three to back the complete game of Dennis Martinez. Lenny Webster added three hits for the Comets while Gary Sheffield homered for the Hurons.?
Game 3 Comets 7 Hurons 3 -- Mark McGwire and Albert Belle hit two-run homers for the Comets and Ken Caminiti added a two-run double to the mix. Mickey Tettleton tripled home a couple of runs for the Hurons.?

Game 1 Comets 5 UGH 4 -- Milt Thompson, Mike Sharperson and Jerry Browne combined for five hits, five RBI and three runs scored as the Comets built a 5-1 going to the 8th. After a Will Clark two-run HR and Mike Devereaux' triple and run scored on a fly ball,?
?the Comets had to hold on for dear life. Jay Howell recorded a 1-2-3 ninth to get the save.?
Game 2 UGH 3 Comets 0 -- Roger Clemens took a no-hitter to the seventh before a Mark McGwire seeing-eye grounder snuck through the right side for a hit (**writers note -- it was a 53-20 for the hit). The Comets, trailing 2-0 at the time, would load the
bases with just one out but failed to score.? Steve Buechele's two-run double in the fourth inning was all the support Clemens would need though they would add a run on a Will Clark two-out double in the 8th. Bill Swift was the hard-luck loser for the Comets,
allowing just seven hits in going the distance.?
Game 3 Comets 3 UGH 2 -- Tom Brunansky hit a solo homer in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead UGH turned double plays in the 1st, 2nd and 4th inning as it looked like Ken Hill was going to make the lead stand up. Hill took the 1-0 lead to the seventh
before Danny Tartabull led off with a game-tying homer that awoke the home town fans. Milt Thompson would give the fans more to cheer about as he ignited a two-out rally with a base hit. Mike Sharperson followed with a double that chased Thompson home and
then scored himself on a double by Ricky Jordan. UGH would mount a rally in the ninth against Jay Howell as pinch-hitter Lenny Dykstra would open the frame by slapping a line drive single then stealing second. He would score as pinch-hitter Kevin Mitchell
would hit a ground-rule double to left-center. Tom Glavine took over for Mitchell, the pinch-runner representing the tying run. Howell would get Tony Fernandez to hit a fly ball to shallow center for out number one and get Lance Johnson on a chopper to first
that moved Glavine to third. Howell would record the save as he snared Willie McGee's come-backer to the mound and threw to first for the third out.?
