map source editor broken, how should map overlays work?

When trying to test the map source editor with my work in progress port, I discovered that it is no longer working with the original d-rats program.

The USGS has both changed the URL used, they have changed the entire way of querying the data.

It looks like now, just query the data for the sites list, I have to pass the longitude and latitude of the current map boundaries.

I am not sure how that map data was used in the past or how it should work in the future.

Can someone explain how map sources and overlays are supposed to work?

We "app-ops" discovered that the NOAA/USGS maps were non-op quite a while back. There is some discussion about it on the "way-back machine" somewhere. Most folks who use the map are sourcing from:

../outdoors/
../cycle/ or
../landscape/

The Thunderforest folks have an API that needs to be entered in the form of:
?apikey=2d03####################a37c548 where the # are lower case alphanumerical as assigned when you sign up.

Interestingly, the "stock" Winitel version of D-RATS maps will "sorta" work for me on Win10, but I can't seem to get a new Win11 laptop to show the map graphic at any zoom level. I really don't use the map much as rendering and locations are screwed pretty badly as one zooms out... just where you want to look at them. If you get something serviceable working with the Python 3 version that would be great. I am not "competent" to help you with the programing in Python, I just dabble, but I think your suggestions about using GitHub sound useful. I would check-in with Maurizio and Marius to see what it was that they had implemented and try to integrate anything that is useful.

What version of D-Rats are you running?? I am running version 0.3.9 and just upgraded to Windows 11 and my maps are all working.? There are a few issues where the URL had to be modified for the Base map in this version, or you had to get an apikey from Thunderforest Maps but once that was done, it works.? You can no longer used the old map downloader program that was part of the original D-Rats from years back.? The source for those maps changed the way they were doing business and the downloader quit working.? That was one of the things the programmers who took over the project fixed in the newest versions.

Hi Glen,

?

Thanks Glen, I was in the earliest group of users that helped to unravel that server issue. I have been running 0.3.9 in all computers here for quite a while now. I am using the identical set up to the other boxes I am running D-Rats on. Something seems to be ¡°arguing¡± with the maps display here. I have run into some other graphics issues with this laptop which has a very hi-res display. I am puzzled.

On the base map change the .de in the URL to .org if those maps are not loading properly.
