ID-51A with USB RTS05 cable

Dan Goldstein

After searching every thread, youtube video, d-rats related website, and numerous PPT and PDFs (some in foreign languages that needed translating), I am still stumped. Even so I still feel terribly foolish asking this question:

To use D-RATS on an Icom ID-51A, does the 2.5mm plug of the USB-RTS05 cable go into the MIC port or the DATA port?

What's happening:
In the?DATA port, nothing seems to happen. No messages transfer in or out. However, CS-51 programming software does connect and transfer.
In the?MIC port, the radio keys up whether D-RATS is running or not and remains keyed until unplugged but no messages transfer in or out.

Configuration:
Windows 10 (build 19041.867) 64 bit
D-RATS v0.3.9 with lzhuf_1 for 64-bit OS
WiFi manually disabled. Otherwise, even when net: settings are unchecked in D-RATS, messages get sent.
Installed the latest driver from RT Systems (2.12.8.0)
Tried COM ports 3, 7, and 17; 9600 baud, 8-N-1, flow control auto or off -- no differences here
GPS>GPS TX Mode = OFF, GPS>GPS Auto TX = OFF, GPS>GPS Set>GPS Out = OFF, DV Set>DV Data TX = Auto
Tried LOW1 and LOW2 power (recommended from another post) and high. The repeater trips but no messages transfer.

Refer to page 9-14 of the advanced user guide to set up the radio. Also note that DV DATA FAST should be off.

Thank you John and Patrick. I appreciate the quick response, and especially the reference to page 9-14 of the manual. I missed it!

One can only conclude that the cable must be bad. Odd, considering the programming app works.

Do not dismiss the cable so quickly. The fact that you can use the programming application proves the cable and the data port on the radio are working. Also be sure the data speeds match. I believe the radio defaults to 4800. Troubleshooting tip: D-RATS will decode position reports sent by radios. So tune to your local repeater and monitor for a while. Any radios sending GPS data will appear in the station list (if you have it set up correctly).

Good luck

I have a ID-5100, Had the same issue not with just D-Rats. After reading several posts to use, not use the programming cable.I purchased a OPC-2350LU and problem solved. As an Electrical Engineer, I want to crack the guts and see what's different, but it's not a $140 itch. What I learned is, not all DATA cables are created equal.

I have used an RTs05 cable with D-Rats for all of my ICOM radios 51A, 880, 5100, ID1 no issues with any of them.

My original post shows results using D-RATS 0.3.9.?
Re-installed the RTS driver, no?difference.
Same issue occurs with D-RATS 0.3.3
Changed to another repeater, which can trip with PTT but no messages sent.
Tried an alternative lzhuf_1 64-bit, no difference

As stated in my original post:?
I followed all the settings in the Getting Started Guide for ID-51A

With another cable, no change. Perhaps my test assumptions are wrong.

Will a D-RATS station connected only over radio to a D-STAR repeater, itself connected to the Internet, be capable of transmitting email? Or does that email transmission require sending via an Internet-connected station?

Hi Dan,
Now I understand your confusion. There is not a global e-mail server for D-RATS. The D-RATS client can send messages using your internet e-mail account. But when using D-RATS on radio, you can only send messages to other D-RATS stations. Those stations may be on a simplex frequency, a repeater or on the other side of a gateway. Any D-RATS station with an internet connection can forward those messages to the internet.?This document?explains it all.

Good luck and 73

Our group practices this all the time. "Email" as used radio to radio in D-Rats may be confusing. It's just a digital radio message using something that kind of looks like an email client and form. It is NOT email as you normally think of internet email. You can actually send internet email, though. D-Rats can use an old-fashioned POP/SMTP account (you may still be able to use this with modern stuff like hotmail and others...gmail may no longer work due to Google security and how old D-Rats mail client is). It works much like sending WinLink email using Telnet....no radio involved. Goes right from your PC over the internet. However, a fantastic feature of D-Rats is the ability to use another stations POP/SMTP account to forward internet email for you if you don't have internet where you are. This is a little involved in setup, and as Patrick said, you the station doing the forwarding has to allow your call to forward through his setup. This is incredibly slick.?

One thing to keep in mind when you are sending any kind of digital D-Rats message to another station...D-Rats will sit there doing nothing if that station does not appear in the active stations list on your D-Rats program. In fact, it has to be pretty current (not sure how many minutes). A good practice is to "Ping" the desired station then go ahead and "send and receive" traffic. Otherwise, D-Rats will often do nothing while it waits until the other station is active again.?

You can automate the ping process by setting Preferences>Messages>Station TTL to 600 seconds (10 minutes). When a message is places in the outbox, if the target station is not on the station list, or more than 10 minutes old, D-RATS will ping the station before attempting to send the message.

Thanks for sharing those little gotchas. Wondering if there's any way to automate the process further specifically when using RF. For example, by placing a D-RATS client on a server pre-configured to relay for specific sending call signs; or?using Winlink, AGWPE, USB-RTS05, ID-51A...

Here is how you do that:
Run an instance of the D-RATS client on the same computer as the Ratflector. Make a network connection to localhost port 9000. Go to Preferences>Email Access, Add a user with a callsign of * and set Access to Both. This instance of D-RATS can now act as a mail server by using the "Send Via" option when creating an e-mail.

The best way I have found to implement an RF connection is to locate the Ratflector computer at a repeater site and make a serial data connection between the computer and a D-STAR radio. In the Ratflector configuration, add a device and make it a serial connection to the comm port where the radio is connected. If you want an AX.25 connection, use a TNC-X (MFJ-1270x) and create a KISS TNC connection in the Ratflector.

Good luck and 73

Thanks for sharing those little gotchas. Wondering if there's any way to automate the process further specifically when using RF. For example, by placing a D-RATS client on a server pre-configured to relay for specific sending call signs; or?using Winlink, AGWPE, USB-RTS05, ID-51A...

You can automate the ping process by setting Preferences>Messages>Station TTL to 600 seconds (10 minutes). When a message is places in the outbox, if the target station is not on the station list, or more than 10 minutes old, D-RATS will ping the station before attempting to send the message.
