D-RATS and Soundmodem

Mitch Winkle

It's also worth noting that the latest version of Thomas Sailer's soundmodem on Linux also includes 300 baud BPSK.

I have to also ask.? "Why not HF packet?"? Same symbol rate and easy to implement.? The throughput is better than you might imagine.

Here's one reason why: multiple decoders

The Direwolf packet modem allows you to use multiple decoders to catch other stations that are slightly off frequency.? On my HF packet node/BBS I use 3 decoders at 30 Hz spacing and it is very reliable for decode.

I don't think you will experience that same level of robustness using BPSK on Linux soundmodem, BUT the good news is that the UZ7HO soundmodem allows "pairs" of decoders, and since the dialog allows that parameter to be set for BPSK 300, I am assuming it will work.? Naturally, the more "pairs" the harder you will tax the CPU.

When you begin testing on HF, let me know.? I am happy to be of help.

Hi Mitch,
Thank for your response. You make some good points. The reason I have been focused on PSK and other modes for HF is mostly because of the negative reports I have read about the reliability of HF packet. Some of the APRS folks go on and on about "retries from hell". But now that the latest software has multiple decoders available, it may worth giving 300 baud AFSK another look. (I try to avoid using the word "packet" when talking about D-RATS.) When I get my HF station going again, I'll send out an invitation to try D-RATS on HF again.

Thanks de,

HF packet is very reliable, and with a good modem like UZ7HO or Direwolf, it's terrific.

I can always be found on 10.141.6 USB (10145 for those who insist on LSB) 300 baud AFSK 1600/1800 (1700 center obviously).? Always happy to experiment and move around the bands.

Node call is AB4MW-7 and FBB is AB4MW-4.? PMail address is ab4mw.#RICH.VA.USA.NOAM

I can install D-RATS and see what's what on HF as a target if you like.? I will report back here if I get it running.

Well, that was easy.? I am online with D-RATS HF AFSK 300 baud.

I used the KISS TNC option in the D-RATS setup, and linked Direwolf via it's KISS TCP4 linkage using socat.? Obviously, this is run as root or by using "sudo".

socat -d -d PTY,link=/root/d-rats,raw,echo=0 TCP4: &

Then in the D-RATS Radio config:
Add a new radio and give it a name.
Type = TNC
Serial Port=/root/d-rats
Baud Rate=9600
TNC Port=0
AX.25 Enabled=
Digi Path=

Just sent a wx request on 30m

Patrick,

? ?Thanks for all the info that you send out and all in your files section. I will say that I have been involved with HF Packet since the 1980's on Network 105 ..14.105 lsb 300 baud and it works Great...we have a large group that have HF/VHF gateways and all are message drops and keybrd to keybrd. I and several others have our BPQ 32 switches running there and other frequencies as well. In the beginning it was all hardware TNC, s now more and more are moving to UZ7HO modem and it works Fantastic. I run dual ports with UZ7HO on HF.

? ? With the collisions that happen with heavy traffic and HF propagation I can see the retry issue..We see very little of that on Network 105...(see network105 yahoo group)

? ? We have done work here in the Atlanta Metro Area with D-Rats on VHF Packet and FlDigi bpsk 250. The only issue is if you have many connected on RF you can see issues with missed comments.?

? ? Thanks again 73. Lee WB4QOJ
