MAPPING SOFTWARE/STATIC MAPS

Hello:

I wondered what software or static maps people are using for when WiFi is not available. ?I am aware that with Google maps you can download a map of the area you are in assuming there is cell coverage/availability or wifi. ?But in an emergency that won't be likely.

Has anyone found a mapping software that will work with D-RATS? ?It would be nice to utilize this for both the ID-51A & ID-5100A radios.

Thank you for your assistance.

I believe D-RATS has an excellent built in mapping capability that is specifically designed to be used without a network connection.? There is a utility program, d-rats_mapdownloader.exe, located in the same directory as the executable for D-RATS itself, that will download map tiles for a selected geographic area.? Once downloaded D-RATS will use the cached tiles.? I am not a real wizard at all this, but did manage to download maps for the local area here and create overlays for points of interest such as trailheads.? The maps are basic street maps, not topographic maps.? Perhaps a real expert could tell us how to get topo maps loaded.

Interesting you should bring this up this morning. I started the Map Download Utility about an hour ago, entered the lat long info, set it to a 10.6 mile diameter, hit start and it's sat at "Downloading (0%)" ever since. So...questions:

1. I assume this is downloading over the internet connection - and not waiting for me to start D-Rats and connect to something else.

2. I note that for lat/long you must enter the degrees followed by a space (it inserts the degree symbol), then enter minutes followed by a space (it inserts the ' symbol), and finally seconds followed by a space and enter the " symbol. Could this NOT be downloading because of an unreported error in the way I've entered the lat/long information?

3. Should I have expectations for download times longer than the last hour or so sitting at 0%?

Thanks!
