I discovered something kind of neat tonight. I've been playing around with
AGW Express - a tool that's purpose is to set up and configure RMS Express,
a virtual serial port and AGWPE (or, with the new version UZ7HO's soundmodem
app) for Winlink over packet. I really like the new version of AGW Express
and its ability to configure UZ7HO's sound modem.
While I was playing with AGW Express tonight I had the idea of bringing up
D-RATS to try to send D-RATS over packet using UZ7HO Soundmodem. I have
successfully used Soundmodem with D-RATS, but not at the same time that I
was using Soundmodem for RMS Express.
So, I created a new radio port in D-RATS. It is a network port with
127.0.0.1 as the and port 8760 (The port UZ7HO is listening on). D-RATS
connected right up, and I can switch back and forth between RMS Express and
D-RATS using the same instance of UZ7HO, the same Signalink, and the same
radio!
I then took things a little further. I have a second PC with D-RATS
installed. On that one I created a radio port with the first computer's IP
address as the address and 8760 as the port. When I send a message from
D-RATS on the second PC it hits UZ7HO on the first PC and out it goes over
packet.
So, PC #1 is handling it's D-RATS session, it's RMS Express session, and PC
#2's D-RATS session. Of course, things would get really confusing if two
applications tried to transmit at the same time. And, there is more
testing/exploring to be done here. But, this seems kind of interesting...
