Re: Question about d-rats.com reflectors

George Zafiropoulos

David,
The first and only time I played around with D-RATS a few months ago I was connected to and there was a lot of traffic and I chatted with some very helpful people.? I can? not connect to it any more either.

Question about d-rats.com reflectors

开云体育

Hello Everyone,

I sent Patrick a D-RATS message a bit ago on the WA7FW Ratflector but I thought I'd try the list too. It seems the ref.d-rats.com:9000 and ref.d-rats.com:9001 ratflectors down?? They won't connect for me and even the server isn't pinging for me (might be expected):

$ping ref.d-rats.com

PING orion.danplanet.com (50.198.170.82) 56(84) bytes of data.
^CFrom 50-198-170-82-static.hfc.comcastbusiness.net (50.198.170.82) icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
From 50-198-170-82-static.hfc.comcastbusiness.net (50.198.170.82) icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable

--- orion.danplanet.com ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 received, +2 errors, 100% packet loss, time 3474ms

Are those two servers operational anymore?? Are there any other Internet and Dstar RF Ratflectors that are somewhat active out there?

Re: IC-7100 and D-rats

Re: ICOM 7100

I'm not a MAC user, but I would think you could the port the other software is using and type it into the D-RATS add a port box. If it's like Linux, it should be something with a TTY in it. Just don't run the other software at the same time you are running D-RATS or there will be a conflict.

Good luck with your 7100 and D-RATS.

Re: ICOM 7100

Best bet is to list your /dev directory and see what is listed. ?For example, on my iMac running OSX and in FLDigig the port I use is "/dev/tty.usbserial"

Re: ICOM 7100

May I jump in with a related question? I have an ICOM-7100 and I'm trying to configure D-Rats to work with it--using a Mac. Macs don't have COM ports, as such. Of course they do have ports, they are just not labeled COM1, COM2, etc. I am connecting computer to radio with a USB cable. Does anyone know what I would type in the D-Rats Serial Port field? I know that the radio is communicating with the computer via the USB cable because other Mac ham radio software works.

Re: ICOM 7100

Roger,
Just highlight the comport that is listed and type in the correct one using the format given in the dialog box. Should work or at least it did for me.

ICOM 7100

I can't get Drats to connect to the ICOM 7100. The com ports that the ICOM 7100 uses is not listed in the Drats software.

Take in the files section of this group. There is a folder named RASPBERRY PI, and in that folder is a file named "HOWTO-Run-DRATS-on-Raspberry-PI.txt". It should get you started.?

Hello Dave,

Get your Raspberry Pi running and then follow the D-RATS documentation on Dan's website.? It's actually quite strait forward.? If you have specific questions or issues, feel free to post them here!

Re: Must be missing something...

You can also use D-Rats with a hotspot, DVAP, or Dongle like a NW Digital ThumbDrive. I use a thumbdrive as well as my Icom radio with D-Rats. With the ThumbDrive, you can connect to a reflector and carry on a voice QSO and a D-Rats conversation at the same time.?

Re: Must be missing something...

Not true actually.?
It works well simplex as well. When everyone in your group has the settings correct (Automatically forward messages in the messages tab in the config), it will relay the messages through the connected stations in the network to get to the destination station.?

Get a KISS mode TNC and you can do it via packet for less than half the cost of a DStar HT.? Chances are you already have a laptop and mobile VHF radio, so all you need is the modem and cables.

Thanks everybody...I now have a clearer picture of what DRats is capable of. ?My primary interest is non-internet based connectivity for EMCOM. ?There is no DSTAR repeater anywhere near me, so I suspect this is going to be a dead-end project, ?I doubt anybody in the my area has DSTAR capability.

How to configure DRATS for ICOM 7100 using Mac OSX via USB port

Anyone know how in D-RATS to specify the serial port of ICOM-7100 connected by USB to a Mac? The ICOM uses the Silicon Labs USB to UART bridge controller. As far as I know there is no COM1, COM2, ... on the Mac. The ICOM has a USB port, thus I am connecting between Mac computer and radio using a standard USB cable, which works for other computer-to-radio applications.

Re: Must be missing something...

You can use D-RATS with a radio only and no internet connection (As long as someone in range has the same system up and running)

I'll explain very basically how our ARES group uses it.
I have a DRATS ratflector (repeater) working on a Raspberry Pi computer always with battery backup as does my internet modem at my QTH.
I have an Icom 880H with a serial cable cable connected to the data jack on the radio. I have a serial to USB converter to connect the serial cable to the Raspberry Pi computer running the ratflector/repeater.

In the settings on the DRATS repeater softwrae, you need to enable the radio port to send data.
My Icom 880H is on our DSTAR repeater frequency.
I ONLY enable the radio port when we need to use the DRATS over the repeater to not clog up the machine.

Everyone in our ARES group has the IP address to the DRATS Ratflector.?
Everyone in our group has the settings in their Drats software to share the connection.
Sharing the connection means if only one person in the group has internet access, everyone on the ratflector has basic internet connection for emails and emergency messages.?
Anyone without internet connection can access the the DRATS ratflector over the repeater to the Icom880H at my shack connected to the ratflector and become part of the network.

This means that in an emergency, if everyone in our area lost email and internet for emergency use, someone could go mobile with a Dstar radio and laptop, find a hot spot, connect to the repeater, and give everyone on our network internet email and messaging capability (Not surfing, too slow). Even without internet, everything can be sent RF only. It's a great tool for aiding our EOC and served agencies in emergencies.

Cons for RF only? Everyone needs a DSTAR radio, cables and a computer.

Hope that clears things up a bit.
Any questions don't be afraid to email me directly at my call at yahoo dot com?

I thought D-Rats had something to do with DStars but it appears to be more of an email/chat/file internet based connection. ?I can't figure out a way to even use a DStars radio with it. ?What am I missing here?

Go to the Files section and download the “Getting Started With D-RATS” document.? It tells how to setup for Internet or radio access.? D-RATS is a very full featured program that sends messages, file transfer, chat and position reporting.? It has many applications and is best suited for EmComm situations, but can be used for other purposes. Its versatility is that it can operate without a radio through the Internet or over a radio from radio to radio, through a repeater, or across linked repeaters.
