WX QSt over DRATS
?I was not overly fond of the WX report received from our local airport, it just did not have the information I felt someone would be looking for or need from a QST. This is what I finally came up with from my PWS, some third party software and some guidance from WXForum and N3TSZ, It hs been running for about 2 weeks now and I am quite satisfied with the result. Here is an example: [2015-08-05 07:01:00] [RATFLECTOR] KF5SMHWX: [QST] |
Re: Accessing Ratflector over RF
I'm on your Ratflector now and it seems to be?operating correctly. I sent you a message there. I'm accessing via DRATS on a Raspberry Pi.
Here in Ocean County we also have a Ratflector for our ARES/RACES/Skywarn. I have the Drats repeater server running on a Raspberry Pi with an Icom 880H connected to the Raspberry via Serial/USB converter. ?We can tie it into our Dstar repeater on demand by activating the radio port in the Drats repeater software. Patrick, Excellent news.? 30 or 40 would work with you me and a few others I know who are good for testing in our region.? I am good on either band.It might be good to round up the troops on "TheRovers" RATS channel to coordinate testing. On your antenna selection, if you have 150 feet or so, try an 80m OCF dipole.? They work great and you don't need them very high if you want NVIS on 80 and 40.? Sky kicks in fine with 20 and higher.? 30 has a mind of it's own. ;)?? If you are short on space, you can use a 40m version at half the length or you can bend the long end of the 80m version, keeping the included angle > 90 degrees.? Mine is only 15 feet or so above ground at the center.? The short leg slopes down to about 10 ft.? The long leg is more or less flat.? Needs a tuner for 30 and 15, but otherwise, with careful trimming, you won't need much in the way of a tuner.? I have a PDF of how to construct one if anyone wants it.? Find it here :? -- Mitch Winkle ...How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him... 1 Kings 18 ESV |
D-RATS RF Access Point
I have completed testing of the UHF and VHF radios and have shut them down. I am satisfied the radios are stable. My next task is to get an HF station going at my location so I can test D-RATS on HF. I am currently seeking a suitable radio. I have narrowed my frequency choice to 30 or 40 meters. I am still on the fence about using AFSK or BPSK modems. I will post here when I am ready for HF testing. Thanks, Patrick (N3TSZ) |
Re: 30m (usually) D-RATS using HF packet
If anyone wants to schedule testing, join the TheRovers channel on the RAT ratflector.
If anyone is around we can arrange freq's etc.? We have VA, Nova Scotia and need MORE folks.? AB9FT in Wisconsin has been trying to monitor us as well. If needed, I can draft a How-To for using Direwolf sound modem on HF packet but it's all in the Direwolf User's Guide already.? So basically, if you have any sort of sound card interface (Signalinks work great!), you can do this in Windows or Linux.? I can help you with configs once you get Direwolf installed. Should work equally well with the original "soundmodem" program on Linux, or UZ7HO sound modem on Windows also since it now has a TCP KISS interface. |

See Patrick's previous suggestions here, but turning off the ax.25 overhead was helpful I think.? Some further tuning is in order but it is difficult because the doc is thin on the parameters and what exactly they apply to. Mitch

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHey Mitch, What did you have to change to get email working in D-Rats?? Would be good for the list to have archived. --David KI6ZHD On 07/14/2015 08:29 AM,

Re: D-RATS RF Access Point
Also learned yesterday, that the AX.25 port (axports) and the AX.25 interface are NOT NEEDED at all.
Simply start Direwolf, link to D-RATS using a socat command and that works as long as the AX.25 checkbox is checked in the TNC config dialog. Unfortunately, if you UNCHECK the AX.25 checkbox, this breaks the configuration and the "Radio" will not work.? Still looking for answers on that one. I am using 0.3.3 |
