Re: Use of Filter Tabs

Jack, Most excellent investigative report!
I am curious though, if all of the 'RAT' tabs were created first, then lastly the '[QST]' tab created, would it hen grab all of the preceding tab QSTs?
I do not use many rats so I have no real way of knowing, just struck me as plausible.

Use of Filter Tabs

开云体育

All,

?

Being the inquisitive person I am, I had to do non-destructive discovery testing… without disruption of primary traffic functions. I completed my first round last night with the help of Paul, K9PTF and forbearance of the Alabama Ratflector folks.

?

Of course I was able to verify Al’s KF5SMH statement about creating a [QST] filter tab – it grabs all of them if the filter is created. I did that first. The Main tab will no longer have any QST’s present.

?

Next I wanted to see if I created an [Alabama] filter in addition, what would happen to the QSTs originated from that Ratflector. They shown in the [Alabama] filter but no longer in the [QST] filter tab.

?

The same is true for any additional ratflector specific filter tabs I create. Those tabs now receive QST’s to that group and those QSTs no long shown in the [QST] filter tab.

?

Channels and Private Chats appear to remain immune to QSTs.

?

At this point I wondered if the order of the tabs might change the behavior. They do not. The presence of a ratflector specific filter group “hijacks” any QST originating from that group.

?

Hopefully we can convince Maurizio to look at this behavior so the presence of a [QST] filter tab will take precedence over any other tabs and “harvest” all QSTs. This will enable each ratflector specific filter tab to provide an interruption free chat, yet leave a central place to look at QST’s that are sent.

?

An example of how I configured the Chat screen is shown below. For those who are not using the feature yet, note that a Filter Tab containing RED letters contain unread traffic:

?If each and every one of us do the same, abuse I don't know if it will be, but ...?

Re: Great job!!

Jack, it has been my experience that as long as incoming messages are preceded with [QST]they will be directed to the QST Tab. That is for receiving stations, the QST transmitter still gets the message on whatever channel they have open at the time of Transmission.

One might infer from this example that it is possible to “route” any server you are connected to to a filtered tab. Also one can created a filtered subgroup on a server for net check-ins on a particular server.?

Al, can you verify that if [QST] is routed to a filter tab, and if particular servers are routed to other tabs, that the [QST] activity will not show in the “net” filtered tab for a net activity?

Re: Great job!!

David,
What portions do you consider abuse?? Is it the posting of tropical storm advisories, local weather reports, information on which ratflectors can be used for mail drops and files with instructions on D-Rats functions or something else?? There are so many new users we are trying to help and educate, but we can cut back on some stuff if a particular item annoys people.? D-Rats options are limited to a maximum of 60 minutes between QST posts, and unfortunately, the program tries to synchronize the times together so they all want to dump at one time.

If the QSTs are what is driving you nuts, you can Add a Filter with [QST] as the filter target.? All of the QSTs will then display only on that tab and not in the Main Chat window.? The other issue is that some ratflectors and station operators do things on multiple ports.? The QST function gives the option of displaying to the current port or all of the ports, but does not give a choice to leave certain ports out.? Adding a feature like that might be labor intensive for folks that are trying to do this as a free service.? Right now, in particular, some of us are trying out multiple items to determine if everything in the beta release is working properly.? This may also be adding to the annoyance as we play with some of the new toys.

Re: RSS NWS Alert Feeds

Another problem I have noticed with the National Weather Service RSS feeds is that they used to be obtainable as straight text.? But a few years ago the NWS changed things around and the section labeled as (TEXT ONLY) actually delivers a product in HTML format.? Since D-Rats does not work with HTML files, these RSS feeds no longer work.? My workaround is to obtain the text only by copying and pasting from either the RSS site or through my NWSchat feed from our local weather service office.? I save it to a simple .TXT file on my desktop and have a QST set up to display the contents of that file every 60 minutes.? I go back and change the text as the new advisories come out or just discontinue the QST when the information is no longer relevant.? If you notice, the emails will not display HTML either.

If you are a SKYWARN group member or with Emergency Management in some capacity, you may have access to NWSchat in your area.? Access is granted to specific individuals through the local weather service offices.? Be careful if you get this.? Certain products displayed on NWSchat are not for public release and you could lose your access if you redistribute it.? Other items, such as the public advisory releases, are free to distribute.? You can always go to the NWS RSS Feed site at??to obtain the information on the latest advisories and storm bulletins for your given area.

Re: D-RATS have stations display under the appropiate filter

The mismatch is usually caused by the station or ratflector monitoring two or more ports at the same time.? Originally, it was thought that a station would only want to be on one port at a time, but we found that multiple ports were possible.? This allowed a station to monitor the main RAT ratflector and one or more others.? We just had to watch to see which port the other station was transmitting on and jump to that port to answer.? During actual operations, this might not be a good idea but could be a necessity for a station acting as a liaison station between groups working two or more different ratflectors or ports during an incident. One drawback is in the posting of QSTs.? The choices are between posting to the CURRENT port or to ALL PORTS the station is monitoring.? You cannot specify sending to a group of particular ports and not to others.? For example, I am presently posting to ALL PORTS Tropical Weather Advisories from the National Weather Service to ALL PORTS.? Many of the stations on RAT, SEWX, and StTammany might be interested in getting prepared for a possible tropical storm or hurricane getting ready to form in the Gulf of Mexico.? The PDRA ratflector group in Pennsylvania maybe not so much.? I don't have a choice of cutting out the PDRA port unless I quit monitoring it completely.? I am not complaining here.? I am ecstatic about the phenomenal progress we are making in having a software package hams are getting FOR FREE to use in EmComm work.

The work being done on drats is great!? If possible I would like to see call signs displayed according to the filter created for each ratflector.? So if I have three ratflectors and a filter for each only those stations that are logged in on each ratflector will display under that filter selection.? Also a major bug for years has been that a station will log on a particular ratflector but they will show up under a different ratflector.? These are just suggestions if you tackle them I certainly applaude the team working on updating the drats program.? I know the amateur radio community appreciates the work being done.? Thank you for under taking this up dating project and I know it is a tremendous task.? Thanks again for everyone's work to update and improve the drats program.

Hi Al,

Detailed instructions for the weather QST are here:

In preferences, the OpenWeather uri is left alone as default.
The "bare" api key you received from OpenWeatherMap is placed in Preferences->Chat->OpenWeather appid
Save the preferences.

Next, create the QST as described in the GitHub wiki link above.
Place the location below where it says "Enter the Open Weather station name" and select "Current" next to it.

For your location, based on QRZ.com, the location should be "Aztec,NM,US" minus the quotes.

I could not get the imperial units to work in d-rats, only directly on the openweathermap website. However d-rats converts the temperature as part of the QST response. There are conversion factors and conversion tables in the GitHub wiki mentioned above.

Check out some of the other wiki items too.

I hope this helps.
