Re: D-RATS and Soundmodem

Mitch Winkle

I have to also ask.? "Why not HF packet?"? Same symbol rate and easy to implement.? The throughput is better than you might imagine.

Here's one reason why: multiple decoders

The Direwolf packet modem allows you to use multiple decoders to catch other stations that are slightly off frequency.? On my HF packet node/BBS I use 3 decoders at 30 Hz spacing and it is very reliable for decode.

I don't think you will experience that same level of robustness using BPSK on Linux soundmodem, BUT the good news is that the UZ7HO soundmodem allows "pairs" of decoders, and since the dialog allows that parameter to be set for BPSK 300, I am assuming it will work.? Naturally, the more "pairs" the harder you will tax the CPU.

When you begin testing on HF, let me know.? I am happy to be of help.

It's also worth noting that the latest version of Thomas Sailer's soundmodem on Linux also includes 300 baud BPSK.

Re: D-Rats Current Version

Btw, I heard back from Dan on this mysterious 2014 Windows D-Rats build:

The 04172014 build was merely a custom version I rolled for someone with
a new custom form in it. That's all. No mapping or other functional
changes of any kind.

So that means that 02232012 is still the last release of D-Rats.

Re: D-Rats Current Version

I wonder if this was related to the problem a year or so ago when it was discovered that under certain circumstances the Windows version would occasionally consume 100% of the CPU? Thanks again for pointing it out, I'm going to give it a try myself.

Hi Craig,

I don't know the history of 04172014, however it is in the alternative D-RATS build directory (http://d-rats.danplanet.com/download/tmp/). Unfortunately Dan Smith (KK7DS) of DanPlanet.com doesn't seem to be active anymore in its development.

It appears that mapping works better in this version though...

Hello Tom,

For D-Rats, correct but per the previous example, Dstar supports it's own simple messaging as well.

Hello Tom,

Welcome to the hobby and Dstar!? Lots of interesting things to learn and do!?? Btw, the specific detail about not being able to do Dstar messaging isn't accurate.? I've done messaging from my IC-80AD:

I will admit it's not very easy to do on an IC80AD as it was one of their first gen Dstar radios but definitely possible.? I hope it would be easier say on a IC92AD or the newest gen ID-31/51 radios.

Hi Tom,
The first thing you should know is that the D-STAR format does not support messaging directly from the radios. All D-STAR radios however, have a serial data port and support sending "low speed data" along with the voice traffic.

Hi Tom,
The first thing you should know is that the D-STAR format does not support messaging directly from the radios. All D-STAR radios however, have a serial data port and support sending "low speed data" along with the voice traffic. It is best to think of a D-STAR radio as a modem, with about 900 bps through-put. With a PC connected at each end, you can chat, send messages and transfer files. If one station has an internet connection, you can send and receive plain text e-mails using Winlink or your personal internet e-mail account. The radios can operate simplex or through a repeater and gateway, as long as there is a path between the two radios. You should ask the repeater operator how they feel about data only traffic on their system as you will appear to other users as if you are transmitting and not saying anything. D-RATS does not have a nationwide network, like APRS, which lets you send short messages from the keypad of the radio.

For more information about D-RATS, download the Operating Guide and it's addendum, and the "D-RATS basic e-mail features" quick reference sheet from the files section.

As to non-Hams on amateur radio, consider the phone patch. You can contact non-Hams by phone, but the type of traffic is restricted. You can call home and tell them to order pizza for supper, but you can't call the pizza shop and order it yourself. So health and welfare e-mails are allowed.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

The rc.local file is the best way to auto start d-rats and/or d-rats_repeater on Ubuntu and derivatives. I've got an example here somewhere of an rc.local file I modified to start d-rats_repeater on a Raspberry Pi and Odroid C1.

If you want to run Fedora I can provide a systemd script that starts d-rats_repeater as a system service. There is also an rpm repository on with d-rats-daily packages, and I host one as well.

Re: D-RATS RF Access Point

I've been retired for a number of years now, but I don't think it's an issue starting d-rats, if you wanted it for everybody, you would probably start it in the inittabs file, or if for only one or a select number of people, I think you would put it in the .cshrc file.? I may have forgotten a few things but I think I'm close.? So has d-rats been compiled for the linux x86 family?

Right now I'm using Teamviewer for remote access, as it's a Windows XP box now. I'm thinking I want to change it to a lightweight version of Linux. I'm looking at LUBUNTU. The .iso still fits on a CD. I also have to look at how to put D-RATS in the startup queue. I'm beginning to think the fldigi module is not going to work as well as I had thought, so I might drop it from the project.

I do not know what port Wires-X uses.
Fldigi uses port 7322 to communicate with its ARQ module. That is how I got it talking to D-RATS.

Re: D-RATS RF Access Point

Lubuntu served me well for a good long while.? Anything Xubuntu can do, Lubuntu CAN do if the right packages are installed....however: If you need really light weight and aren't overly concerned with the look of the X-Windows stuff, straight Debian LXDE is a champ.? My main production packet node (2 ports) runs on Debian Wheezy and I have done a lot of testing on Debian Jessie, the latest stable version.? Both using LXDE.? Very lightweight, and easy to maintain.? The ONLY gotchas are Debian doesn't install any non-free software so you may have to dig a bit (but easy to find) for some drivers for things like odd graphics cards or WiFi dongles.? Stick with RALINK or REALTEK and there are two firmware bundles that make those WiFi dongles perk right up.

Lubuntu is very nice and light weight.? For me, Lubuntu was lacking some functionality but Xubuntu covered them and was still pretty light.? If you like eye-candy and your computer has a somewhat modern 3D video card, Mint is nice as well.

I don't remember D-rats offering an init script to start things so you can just add the running of the program at the end of the /etc/init.d/rc.local file

curious.. is it specifically not working?? Is the communications between D-RATS to Fldigi unstable??? Is D-RATS over HF not robust enough?

I do not know what port Wires-X uses.

Are you talking about Yaseu System Fusion Wires-X??? If so, it's well covered in the Yaesu HRI200 manual.
