Re: Creating a 0.4.0 version?

Hi John

I think you did an exceptional progress and off course version 0.4.0
should be issued as it seems quite stable and working for the tests
done

about the upcoming features off course you are free to invest your
time in what you think it's best.

from my perspective, as there are already a lot of internet chatting
tools, I had always preferred to invest time and my few knowledge get
in RF related features, considering this I think the most useful and
interesting it's the part to interoperate with RS-MS1a. On this
specific point I recall having done some tests when the app was issued
and, If am not mistaken, the text messages (or a part) were shown in
d-rats logging when "raw text" and "sniff" are enabled.

considering that for time being there is still not a windows
installer, I think the effort of having an online service for its'
configurations it is marginal with respect to the installation and
updates, so I would not prioritize that part (off course it would be
nice to add somewhere a link to an "official"(which one?) site with
the "most updated" config instructions, e.g. a ratflector list)

on DSR / CTS i am not sure what that could bring.

thanks
maurizio

Next I think I would want to work on improving the configuration GUI.

what I would have in mind is that for some settings like ratflector
lists, forms, and mapping services to be able to select updates from
online sources when D-Rats has access to the Internet.

I also want to add options to the serial port dialog to allow testing
and using support for DSR / CTS as options and allow optionally using
the driver XON/XOFF protocol.

I also want to look at if I can get D-Rats to be able to detect and
interoperate with the Icom android application that just does text and
pictures. Unfortunately I do not have a specification on how the
picture sending/receiving works on that APP.

It is possible that you have firewall rules on the Microsoft Windows system that is blocking traffic. Look for that first.

The defaults are mostly the same as for python2 based d-rats, and none of the ratflector entries work any more. There is already ticket to replace them with an improved system.

The same may be true for the MAP URLs. Maurizio and I have been using the thunderforest service and URLs, but that requires signing up with an account for access.

I think I still need to install some items. Below is the debug file output.
Editing this down a bit:

File "C:/msys64\home\don hinsman\D-Rats/d_rats/msgrouting.py", line 783,
in _run self.__event.wait(self.__config.getint("settings", "msg_flush"))
ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: '30.000000'
This is an error in the d-rats configuration file. A number that is expected to be an integer has been entered in as a float.

You may be able to fix that with the configuration settings for D-Rats, otherwise you may need to use a text editor to edit the file.

This means that there is a syntax error in one of the MapFileSource files.

I seen a previous report, however the file that caused it was deleted to fix the problem, so I have no way to reproduce it.

There is an open ticket for it, the main cause is that while the file has strict syntax requirements, Nothing in D-Rats makes sure that human entered data is in compliance with those requirements before saving it to disk. Any extra punctuation in a map source description can cause this type of failure.

The main difference in the python2 version of D-rats is that it tends to silently ignore these errors.

This is because d-rats timed out in listing the serial ports.
D-Rats tries to connect to any that are on the system before listing them.
I did not encounter a 121 semaphore timeout in my testing.

Looks like some more logging needs to be added to that module to identify the serial port that this occurred on.

Then if it shows up again, we would may be able to tell if this is an issue that d-rats should alert on or ignore.

Thanks for being so patient with my slow efforts,
This is one of the things that this group is for.

Any ideas why I can't access internet or see my maps.? I checked the defined map directory and the tiles are there.

Thanks for being so patient with my slow efforts,

Re: Windows install Wiki updated for a simpler option.

Thanks John

As i happen to have a recently reformatted PC with Windows 10, I took the chance to install the new d-Rats from scratch so I am here to share my experience

From the procedure indicated here:

I followed the various steps of "option 1":
- install of a fresh msys2 from:
Download and executed the installer: msys2-x86_64-20230127.exe

Download of the script with
wget

Opened shell and executed
./msys2_packages.sh

Which after a bit of time doing its stuff brought to the closure of the terminal

So I reopened the terminal from Win10 menu: "MSYS2 MSYS" And relaunched:
./msys2_packages.sh

This time it completed letting the terminal open and no apparent errors and

Then I proceed with:
pacman -Syu --noconfirm git
git clone
cd D-Rats
./d-rats.py

At this point I got a stop with:
/usr/bin/env: ‘python3’: No such file or directory

after some trial and errors (and reading the instructions at your link to the end) I understood this is because D-Rats needs to be launched not by the " MSYS2 MSYS" which I had opened before, but by "MSYS2 Mingw 64-bit" (you have to look for it in the Win10 menu as in my case wasn’t appearing in the proposed list)

This time I was able to launch D-Rats:
- cd D-Rats
- ./d-rats.py

And then I did the usual config ...

It took to me about 30 min, mostly for downloads, so I hope this helps having more testers on the new py3 version!

Have a nice weekend
maurizio

Sounds like this topic has run it’s course when the discussion gets nasty.

Re: D-Rats on RF has met its demise here.

I don't know how DV data will be allowed on HF because even the new proposal is 2.4KHZ bw. Even if they increase the baud rate. Voice I've been on before. Kind of a novelty, I think.?

While the low speed data goes over HF, too, my guess is there is not enough DStar HF to draw attention of HF police like WinLink has.?

Re: D-Rats on RF has met its demise here.

Respectfully, check the emission designator for D-STAR DV. It is 6K00F7W which is 6 KHz per Icom specs. On every D-STAR transmission the baud rate (voice, data or both is 4800 bps. That doesn’t change running only voice, only data or both. The transmitted bandwidth stays at 6 KHz. As far as running D-RATS on HF, it’s going to be a pretty unreliable mode anyway. There has been an HF D-STAR voice net running for several years. Keep in mind, that 1200 bits reserved for data is going to be used for callsign and other signaling when operating just voice. It’s been an unresolved issue whether it’s legal for voice or data and will remain unresolved until the FCC decides to update the data regulations anyway.. For D-RATS, II stick with VHF or UHF for DV mode or on 1.2 GHz with DD mode.

?

I would put more faith in ICOM’s published specs that Dan’s opinion. I just wish he’d stuck with D-RATS development. It’s a fantastic piece of software and could have been even more.? Final comment on the subject.

Not according to Dan Smith, the guy who wrote it. I have been looking at anything I can find on Drats for years now. Dan's comments go back a long time... Before he stopped working in Drats.?

Re: Inconsistent CQCQCQ responses

Edited

6 KHz is OK for voice on HF but not data. Check Part 97 FCC. Also there is that 300 baud limit at the moment. So no to DStar data on HF.?

Re: D-Rats on RF has met its demise here.

Apparently not per the spec. Drats uses its own protocol.?

Doesn’t DV data also break the transmission into packets whether radio or network? But yes, smaller packet size should improve transmission.

John,?
Thanks for that reference. Very interesting and useful. However, it says that the slow speed data frame has no error correction at all, as a previous comment stated. I was also told this by Icom (called them) when I had problems with a USB connection to my 7100 breaking up D-Rats "chat" into several transmissions instead of just one longer one on the RT Systems cable. I was told that computer USB breaks up serial data into packets, while true DV Data is one continuous stream....exactly what that document says in paragraph 6.?
