Don't forget that D-Rats works over AX.25 packet networks too.

Re: Trying to access a ratflector from my radio

If you do make a sked, and it is on voice reflector BE PREPARED for all the helpful hams telling you "You have NO AUDIO on your transmission". LOL

They will SEE the data flow (Call, name, whatever message you have), but not hear the audio.

If you can pick a one-off reflector, like a D, the sked will be better. OR NOT, maybe come back to the 'helpful' hams and let them know what you are doing and they will explore too.

Re: Trying to access a ratflector from my radio

It is unlikely you will make a D-RATS contact on a D-STAR reflector unless you make a sked first. Most D-RATS activity takes place on the internet or on local frequencies. I believe there is a bridge between the GA ARES Ratflector and a repeater in Atlanta. I think it sits on REF030A most of the time. K3PDR in Philadelphia has a Ratflector with D-STAR and analog radios connected to it exclusively for local D-RATS traffic.

One way to test the connection to your 5100 is listen to a mobile or portable radio that is transmitting a GPS stream. You should be able to see the data being decoded in the Events Log tab. If that works, then you probably have everything else set correctly.

I have been connecting my laptop to my id-5100, and using my pi-star to connect to the reflectors that say "data" or "d-rats" in the descriptions. I then do a "ping all stations" and have never seen another station.

I am quite confident all is configured correctly, as it works thru the internet, and I can see my radio key up when d-rats makes a call.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong, and if my (infrequent) actions are impacting other users or resources.

Re: Trying to access a ratflector from my radio

Most Repeaters/Reflectors frown on using normal Voice reflectors for D-RATS as the voice users can't tell that you and the station you are Ratting with are there. If anyone on the voice channel keys o top of you transmission both the Rat and the Voice station will crash. Most Reflector owners have set Module D as the DATA module to pass data and D-RATS traffic on. In the event of an Emergency your D-STAR and Reflector will usually allow Data on normal voice modules with a stipulation tha the Data traffic announce via Voice that Data traffic is going to be passed prior to sending the DATA. I takes a very disciplined RACES/ARES group to use D-RATS and VOICE on a normally VOICE ONLY Gateway/Reflector. This is why most?Gateway/Reflector owners deligate the D module for DATA/EMCOMM use. N2KTO?

Any radio that is going to be used with a MMDVM device must be 9600baud capable. If the radio in question has a data port, jack, takeoff point on it you most likely will be able to connect successfully to a MMDVM RADIO BOARD. This board is different than a Jumbospot board.?

A YouTube Video on using D-Rats for Emcomm has been posted

I participated in a YouTube live stream the other day on Using D-Rats for Emcomm with Steve Goodgame of K5ATA Ham Radio using a PowerPoint put together by John Davis WB4QDX, who is with Georgia ARES and used it to teach members participating in Georgia Auxcomm.? You can check it out here:
? Leave a question in the video's comment section if you need help with some aspect of D-Rats and we will try to get it answered, or you can comment here.? If Steve gets good feedback on the topic, he may invite me or another person familiar with D-Rats to go over the full set up.? All of us here know that just putting it on the computer and running it for the first time is just the starting gun on getting the program to a fully functional state.? Running on a Raspberry Pi has its own separate set of additional issues to deal with.?? We really need to encourage others to get familiar with and use this resource, so I hope you will take a look.

Cordially,
Glen Strecker - KG5CEN

Re: Trying to access a ratflector from my radio

Ratflectors are normally just reachable via the Internet unless there is a local emergency going on.? The operators of those ratflectors don't want to tie up a repeater or reflector with a lot of digital data traffic that would interfere with other users of those resources unless it was necessary to do so, and they had permission from the repeater and/or reflector owners.? Each time a station would send out a chat, beacon, QST message or tried to do a file transfer, it would appear that someone was keying up the repeater and not saying anything.? File transfers could take a bit and during that time, no one else would be able to use that resource or series of resources.?

During local emergencies, the ratflector could be brought up on a local simplex channel and still cover a large chunk of real estate without tying up the repeater with digital traffic.? You could make arrangements with another station to bring up D-Rats on a repeater or reflector that is not normally in use for testing, but I would not make a habit of constantly operating in that mode unless there was a need for it.? Otherwise it would just be interfering with others trying to use the resource.

Could someone please describe to me how I can reach a ratflector from the Charlotte NC area from my ID-5100?

Re: Philadelphia Digital Radio Association Ratflector

The K3PDR Ratflector is not connected to a D-STAR reflector. The only radio connection available is in the Philadelphia, PA area only.
