I use a 8050 as Q1 and 2N2222 in final of my newly made 2023 Pixie. It works great but now about 200-500 cycles off frequency depending on using 9 or 12 volts. Power output is 1 watt at 12 volts. I

There are inexpensive synthesizer based VFO available based on the DDS chips or the Si5351 synthesizer chip. I would check these out if you want to add frequency agility to the kit. Mike N2MS
