D4D: Go mobile with Raspberry Pi

Folks,

I suppose you have seen the video "Field Test: D4D and Pi" at my web store . We Chinese hams have a WeChat discussion group about it and we have achieved several successes putting together this configuration.

You will need:
1x D4D radio that you can build by yourself from the kit which you can purchase from
2x Audio cables come from D4D kit
1x USB sound card that you can purchase from
1x Raspberry Pi Model 3B or higher with WiFi. In order to get it running, you will need a micro SD card, and a USB power supply cable. LCD display is not needed, as we will use VNC or TeamViewer to remote control by WiFi
1x Li-Ion power bank for both 12V >0.5A (for D4D) and 5V >2.0A (for Pi) output and a DC cable for D4D. If you cannot get it, you can work out your own solution
1x EFHW antenna (you can purchase the Mini Wire Antenna kit from ?as it is a perfect match for D4D) or a dipole antenna like 6-60m Coil Dipole Antenna or other antennas you may have on hand
1x Your cell phone with Internet Sharing to your Raspberry Pi

Software on Pi:
You will need to install WSJT-x Raspberry Pi version. The latest version is?
If you would like to use JTDX instead, you can try this?
VNC host is by default installed, but if you find it not compatible, you can try TeamViewer. Remember to start service at power on
Setup the WiFi after your cell phone shares the Internet

Software on your cell phone:
VNC client or TeamViewer client
You will need to share your Internet to Pi

Please share your experience setting up these hardware and software. Here we Chinese hams love this very much as the whole configuration is so portable.

Thanks,
Adam

Out of town until July 20

Folks,

I am out of town until July 20. During this period, I can take orders but cannot ship D4D kit or Mini Wire Antenna kit, but I still can arrange shipment for HT-1A, R3500D and 6-60m coil dipole antenna. Appreciate for your understanding.

Thanks,
Adam

No plan but you can consider modifying by yourself.

trent,?
sounds like you solved your problem bpf.But before building one,?

why dont you put the rig in some shielding and build an inline filter before the rig?maybe install some caps to ground?

maybe .o1 uf ceramics to ground? i have built mine today and it receives? fine. took it mobiling with me? ?i dont have this problem. But they probably dont run the freqs yours does.
?
I physically connected a ground wire to the case of my radio and hooked it up to the nearest ground connection which at home is the 8 ft triad ground rods i have driven into the dirt for other equipment. Not only do i have an antenna ground i have an earth ground too to the case of the radio.it really reduced the noise in my receiver..

I started out with an old johnson viking tube rig with an s38b receiver. :). I ground everything including my wife from my bank account hi hi. one wire with a ring connector or fork if you dont have the ring. or rap the ground wire around the screw and tighten. see if that helps.

Folks,

The manual is being written. It takes a week or so.

Thanks,

Mini Wire Antenna

Kit Assembly Manual

?

Draft

CRKITS.COM

?

The Mini Wire Antenna can be used with D4D DSB Transceiver for FT8, HT-1A CW Transceiver and other QRP power level transceivers. It is tiny and light weight. You will need to supply the wire and coaxial cable by yourself since the shipping cost is high. The max OD for wire is 3mm, but it works great for thinner wire.

?

Applications

  • 49:1 or 64:1 UNUN for EFHW

  • 9:1 UNUN for Long Wire

  • 1:1 BALUN for Dipole

  • 4:1 BALUN or UNUN

  • and etc...

?

Part List

  • 1x BNC connector with washer and nut

  • 1x 100p capacitor

  • 1x Toroid Material -43 OD 16mm (Manufactured by Fair-Rite)

  • Enameled Wires

    • 60cm 0.7mm OD Red

    • 60cm 0.7mm OD Shining Golden

    • 60cm 0.7mm OD Dark Golden

  • 5x Cable Tie

  • 1x Main PCB

  • 2x Insulator PCB

Re: Photos of Mini Wire Antenna Sample Build

Folks,

I will receive all the parts this weekend and will ship a few kits. Please place email order at 12 USD each plus 5 USD each time for shipping.

The PCB will be compatible for these applications using a toroid FT-63-43:
BALUN 1:1
BALUN 4:1
UNUN 49:1
UNUN 9:1

Thanks,
Adam

Re: Preliminary Specifications of 6-60m 100W Coil Dipole Antenna

Adam ,

I have 50 meters overall distance to use for a dipole , so it will not be a problem .

Thanks ,

As the name Gipsy shows, it is better for mobile usage.?

Why D4D is a serious rig?

Folks,

Do you think a 100W SSB commercial rig is a serious one? If yes, let's see why D4D is serious as well.

Human ears can hear 6dB-10dB Signal to Noise Ratio when we do SSB QSO. However, FT8 can decode -24dB SNR. It is at least 30dB difference and it will translate to 100W vs. 0.1W. Now D4D can transmit 1W and only half of it will be effective, so it is 0.5W FT8 and it translates to 500W SSB. So, do you think a 500W SSB rig a serious one? It explains why over 9000km QSO can be achieved.

Thanks,
Adam

Thanks for 5.0/5.0 review from OK1UDA. You can write your review there.?

Photos of Mini Wire Antenna Sample Build

Folks,

See this page in Chinese:

The first photo is for 49:1 UNUN for EFHW, and the second photo is for 1:1 BALUN for Dipole. It will be added to the option drop down list of D4D in a week or two. Now I am still waiting for parts and massive production PCB.

The PCB design is inspired by nice designs from QRPGUYS. My design part is that the same PCB can be used for both EFHW and Dipole.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: Preliminary Specifications of 6-60m 100W Coil Dipole Antenna

Adam ,

I have one of these antennas on order and am looking forward to adding it to my currently limited antenna farm .

Could you please supply the overall length so I can make plans on where to install it when it arrives ?

Thank you ,

Charlie , W5COV?

Re: New Antenna Products Forecast

Folks,

Now the 6-60m 100W Coil Dipole Antenna is orderable from the drop down menu of D4D Frequency and Options. Also, I have added a new USB Sound Card option at affordable price. The sound card is a Chinese famous brand and the performance is tested okay with D4D.

The Mini Wire Antenna sample PCB is received. It seems good. I am waiting for parts and writing kit manual to be able to ship. Hopefully in 2 weeks.

Thanks,
Adam

Charles,

You can place email order right now and we will ship in a week or so. The introductory price is 85 USD including air shipping. In CRKits version, you will get a free SL-16 to BNC adapter in case you have thread compatibility problem. It did happen before per my experience.

SL-16 is equivalent to M or SO239 connector but in a metric thread.

Thanks,
Adam

Folks,

I will announce two new wire antenna (kit) products shortly.

The first one is the new model Gipsy multiple band dipole to cover 60-6 meter bands with marking of 9 amateur bands on the wire. It can support 100 watts PEP. As the last generation, the antenna is well built and beautiful. I will put info on the web site and will take order immediately. The introductory price will be competitive.

The other is a QRP PCB antenna without wire. I call it Mini Wire Antenna. With the parts in the kit, you can build an EFHW or a dipole. The toroid is a Fair-Rite FT series. The price is competitive. I will start sample build this weekend and take order in about 2 weeks. It will be a great companion with our D4D kit.

BTW, as I announced before, the introductory period will end for D4D. Shipping cost of a few dollars will be added to the price from July. I will update web site this weekend.

Thanks,
Adam
