Windows 10 Restarts...Arrgghh!
Hi All,
I know that there's probably nothing to do about this in our present age, but does anyone have a trick or App for COMPLETELY stopping Windows from auto-installing updates and rebooting my machine overnite with 20 windows open that I'm working on so that I have to re-open/re-config my whole workspace when I get up instead of getting to work???...:(:(:( 1. And yes, I've turned off all the auto settings in WU settings that I could find 2. And yes, I should use a different operating system, yes yes... TIA |
I hardly ever use Windows 10, but when I do, I always run it in a VirtualBox machine even through I have a second SSD in my laptop with Windows 10 as an alternate boot drive.
I myself delay Windows 10 security updates for 30 days and feature updates for 365 days -- the maximum that Windows 10 Pro will allow me to do.? Every 29 or 30 days, I manually update Windows 10 with the latest patches and then I save that virtual machine with a time stamp so I know the next time that I need to update it.? Then I blow out everything after each use back to when I did the last update.? That way I don't have to worry about Windows 10 updating when I use it or getting malware during a session because it all gets destroyed after each use. If I forget to update it in time and I need to use it, I block Windows 10 from the Internet either by disabling the Network Adapter and deleting the DNS servers.? That way I don't have to worry about it updating while I am working with it. But for the most part, when I still use Windows, it is for Crestron software and until I cannot, I run it under a Windows 7 VM.? I even run some Crestron software under Window XP VM yet for some features that Crestron has removed over the years and because Crestron software used to be more lean and fast years ago. For everything else such as email, internet browsing, documentation, and etc, well I do that under my host Linux machine which I update several times a week and it usually takes less than a minute to update. |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýCall me old-school, but over the years i came to the workflow that i actually shutdown my computer after work. So at some point in time when i call it a day, i do a break and close all my open applications. This helps to get a clean cut on a day?s work and get a fresh start the next morning with an empty screen. ? As a side-effect, this also solves the Windows update problem, since you can just let it update as port of the shutdown ? ? ? ? Von: [email protected] <[email protected]> Im Auftrag von Steve Kuehn ? Hi,
You need to open the Group Policy Editor and edit the Windows Template for Auto Updates. ?There are a number of different options which control the updates. ? The only thing you need to be careful of is leaving the computer unprotected but you'll have control when you deploy them In?Group Policy?Object?Editor, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand?Windows?Components, and then click?Windows Update. In the details pane, click?Automatic Update?detection frequency, and set the option. rgds Steve |
Yea I have tried all these Group Policy suggestions in the past and they never seem to hold. I would come back to the laptop the next day and it had restarted. Quite annoying. I have just gotten in the habit where if I see the update restart icon in the tray, I just make sure I save and close all my work at the end of the day and let it do its thing. Its just a battle you can't win.?

Hi,
it will work, we use it all the time with a small network for a specific reason. ? You need to enable the policy and then choose the option 7 which will auto download and notify to install and restart, ? Or you can choose disable and then the updating is a manual process which you will need to do using the windows update feature. ? Trust me it does work. ? Rgds steve? |
Hi,
No....choose DISABLE in the Configure Automatic Updates. i¡¯m not at a windows pc at the moment so these details are from the MS support system. ?If it doesn't make sense message me. Rgds steve ? Configure Automatic Updates
