Roon integration

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi,

?

i know there?s a Crestron module from Roon directly, but this is only working with the Nucleus hardware server.

Does anybody already tried to integrate a Roon software server?

I understood it?s the same API, the limitation oft he official module to the Nucleus is only marketing driven, not technically.

?

Cheers, Thorsten

Thorsten,
The Crestron module works perfectly with the Nucleus. Amongst the best module I have ever used. It won't work if you build your own server, because part of the configuration for integration is in the operating system, which is slightly unique to the Nucleus. From our point of view, the Nucleus is not expensive, reliable, saves hours of messing about, and works so well. It is worth buying.

I recently have done a couple of Roon integrations with Crestron.? As you found out, the Roon Crestron module only works for the Nucleus and not other Roon servers.? In my case, I landed up calling the Roon app from a CrestronGo App using the url of roon:// and that worked fairly well.

For those of you that are trying to figure out even how to use the Roon, Roon is a subscription service which which cost about $10/month.? You can download the App for free however until your Roon server is subscribed to the service, you cannot use the App.? But after the server is subscribed,? the App will auto discover the Roon server and no additional set up is required.

IMHO, there is a lot of hype around Roon.? But the main advantage I see in it is it gives a pretty seamless integration with various servers and endpoints on the same subnet such as Antipodes DX, Bel Canto e.StreamOne, and Sonos.? However, I just spend half a day getting an Antipodes DX USB output feeding a Levinson preamp working on Roon.? It work fine from the built in interface in the Antipodes but while Roon could find the Antipodes server, it could not fine the USB output on the Antipodes.? From what I can tell, neither Antipodes or Roon have any technical support numbers you can call.? I landed up going through every combination is settings in the Antipodes and then having to hard reboot it after each setting change until I finally found a combination that work.

YMMV

I just sent an email requesting info about the product and dealership, as I've really had it with Sonos and Autonomic...
It is a very troubling trend though (which most consumers and dealers are to blame) that there's increasingly little 'live person' tech support. I call this the 'Give us your money...OK, thanks, goodbye now' mentality. We as an industry have in part let this happen...

Thanks David, Steve for the feedback.

Roon is the best music service if your really into music listening and doesn?t consume music just for background purpose.

Roon provides a lot additional information about artists, albums, etc. and it?s search functionality is ecpetional.

So i don?t think it?s a hype, it?s just a music service with different priorities and if you?re into it, then you?ll love it.

At least that?s what my customers tell me ?

?

Regarding the Nucleus: 95% of installation where we need Roon integration consist of a Trinnov preprocessor which acts as a direct high-end Roon endpoint.

So the Nucleus as a hardware piece is just not required in these installations.

So the customer would need to spend €1.500,- more or less for a piece of gear just to integrate into Crestron.

?

I guess i?d go for the Roon-app advice: just switch input on the preprocessor and then do the rest with the native app.

?

Cheers, Thorsten

I tried out Roon in my home for a short time and main issue for me with it as a product, is? that it doesn't support multi user profiles when integrated with streaming/Tidal. To me that's the missing feature needed to support a household that has different tastes in music.? This has also been out there for awhile as a feature request -

Thorsten,

When I say "hype", I not meaning anything bad about Roon.? On the contrary, I think it fits a good niche in integrating different products together.? But it seemed that all the YouTube videos and documentation I found on it was all hype and not much substance on setting it up.? I would love to see Roon and the companies that incorporate it, give better technical documentation rather they just saying how great it is.

Steve

Got it, Steve. And i agree.

Hi,
JFYI - as i just downloaded the latest Roon integration modules for a client with a Nucleus server, i found that the Nucleus-only restriction has been taken away.
The module now works with all Roon Core installations.

I?ll try that with my own Windows-based core during the week.

Cheers,
Thorsten

Hi All,

I have a Core setup with the Roon Rock distro on an Intel NUC, but didn't have any luck today when I tried getting the Crestron module to connect to it.? I'm running the Roon module on a PRO3 and tried restarting/rebooting a few times as mentioned in the help file.??Has anyone tried and had success using the Roon Crestron module with a Roon Core that's not a Nucleus???

Thanks,
Ken

Are you running the most current Roon software? If you¡¯re familiar with setting up the nucleus it shouldn¡¯t be any different. I typically end up having to reboot both Roon and crestron once or twice to get them to sync up and then do the authorization in Roon.?

Thank You for the suggestion, I was wondering that too, but double checked and no new updates available from Roon.? Fortunately, I just sorted it out after taking a closer look at the module in the Simpl+ editor.? Turns out I didn't have a digital in signal linked appropriately on the 'Ready' input.? I totally missed that when looking at how the module's signals were displayed in Simpl Win.

Thanks,
Ken

Yep, had the same experience as i?ve worked on two Roon-integrations recently:

One with a Nucleus and one with a Core running on Windows.

Sometimes the pairing was a bit tricky, sometimes I ended up with two instances listed in the extensions tab of the Roon settings and I had to remove and start from scratch.
