Retrofit wiring Cat5?
Hello all,
We always run cresnet on our lighting jobs for keypads but have come across a retrofit that we cannot.? The house has an existing lighting system that used cat5 homeruns.? We are migrating them to Horizon keypads.? Do you forsee any issues using the cat5 in this instance for keypads only? Thanks! Philip PJW Installations |
开云体育I have had mixed results with Cat5 or Cat6. Too much time trouble shooting. I have given up on Cat wire. I have started to use EX dimmers and keypads, using the Cat wire to 60v dc power to keypads. I’m not sure if Horizon keypads can be powered with 60v dc. ? Gary ? 开云体育CAT5 has always work for me assuming your end device isn't too power hungry.? Okay for keypads but no good for touch panels or other high power devices that are powered via Cresnet.? However many jobs I've seen using CAT5 is wired incorrectly IHMO -- using one pair for ground, one pair for Z, one pair for Y, and one pair for +24V.I prefer using one pair for Y and Z so you get some noise rejection from the twist in the pair.? Then use one pair for +24, and two pairs for ground.? CAT5 will have much more loss on the power and ground lines than Cresnet because of the much thinner gauge. I think it is more important to maintain good grounding at the end point. On 6/20/20 11:25 PM, smurfsarecool2002

I agree with Steve. I would definitely prefer real Cresnet, but in your situation I wouldn't hesitate to use the CAT, esp. with Keypads.
I did a retro project 12+ years ago where I had (10) TPS-6L panels with only (1) cat5e at each. I used Cat-to-Terminal adapters for the connections on both sides and it has worked flawlessly since then. We're in the process of upgrading the system to TSW panels so we'll now convert the CAT back to network connections!! ***? Because Category cables are not intended, with their small solid core conductors, to be stripped, twisted and screwed down upon (maybe this is why some have issues), I HIGHLY recommend RJ45 to Terminal strip adapters. This is a bit of a pain, but it's definitely much better than re-wiring in some retro projects... Here's an example of one that I've used: HTH, Chris K |
开云体育How long are the runs? ? It’s not officially supported because in the old days people did stupid things which wound up underpowering devices and best case causing odd behavior/worst case damaged product. (I can’t remember if its officially as “warranty void if you do this” or just “please, for the love of your deity/ies, please don’t do this) but horizon keypad power requirements are low enough if each one is home run as a practical matter unless they’re very long runs probably will be ok. ? Use one pair for data, other pairs for power/ground. Don’t double up the data or split data across multiple pairs. Any runs that can be replaced wt ? In my house I have a number of Cresnet RJ45s (all Orange for the AV CNET; a couple places also have Yellow for the Lighting CNET) – I used real Cresnet cable to the back of the jack with just a short whip of CAT to punch on the jack and the pinout I used assuming 568B – for compatibility with the old ST devices with RJ-11s on them – was ? White/Orange, Orange/White, and White/Green = +24V Blue/White = Y White/Blue = Z Green/White, White/Brown, and Brown/White = GND ? So looking at the front of the jack you get ? 24 24 24 Y Z G G G ? This way a ST-something’s RJ-12 can be plugged directly in just ignoring the outside 24+G pins but there’s some extra current carrying capacity for anything I need a custom whip for. -- Lincoln King-Cliby, CTS, DMC-E-4K/T/D ?
